I recently noticed on one of the 2fort server that as a pyro you can easily ignite and kill people that are fully submerged in water by holding space I.E. jump. Is this a glitch? is it a bannable offense? can it be fixed?

Yes, it's a glitch because it's exploiting the map. Normal maps with water won't let you burn while your in the water. And also, yes, it is bannable (if I remember correctly). The admins and "e" ranked people try to supress this exploit as much as possible. I do not know if it can be fixed, but like I said, everyone tries to supress this glitch.

You can call it a loop-hole. The only way to fix it is to be vigilant and keep an eye out. If you see someone doing it, shoot us a message in admin chat and we'll take care of it. Its not an instant ban, but if they persist, then we'll show them the door. :)

Wrong, it can be done on any map with water. But your right on the rules part.

Wait, why is it a bannable offense? The Pyro is holding jump to keep doing this by keeping his model above water, and it's doable on any map with water. It's also:

1. Hard to see your opponent this way.
2. Your opponent cannot be set on fire, he can only take the flame damage directly from the flamethrower.
3. The Pyro's not in a good position anyway.

In most cases, it's better to just shotgun the enemy anyway because the swim speed is too slow and predictable to do enough damage, not to mention the Pyro cannot ambush properly from this position. I don't understand what makes it bannable: it's an exploit in the system, of course, because the game for some reason does not register the gun being underwater in order to determine whether it works or not, just the player model. But it's not a game-breaking exploit to begin with.

I mean, clearly, you guys have established rules for it, but...why?

It may not be game-breaking compared to 'sentries beneath the map' exploit, but it is still an exploit. The whole point of having bodies of water is to douse yourself from the Pyro's flames, to escape from them; there's even an achievement: 'force 10 burning enemies into water.'

The actual exploit we're concerned over is the Pyro's ability to fire into water with a weapon that shouldnt work in the water itself and damaging the players who are underwater, where, by game mechanics, should be safe from the fire.

And its only bannable if you repeatedly persist. Most people stop after being warned. Some might require a kick.

Maybe Valve meant for it to work that way? Perhaps they did it so that Pyros can shoot fire out of the water, but as a consequence it also works for shooting into the water.

I may have this mindset because I come from a community (the Smash Bros. community) where something like this is not considered bad, whether it's intended by the developer or not, and instead considered a legitimate strategy.

Of course, something like skywalking or building sentries under the waterbed is terrible because it's gamebreaking (a similar thing called the Infinite Cape Glitch also was found in Brawl and almost immediately banned), but if it's something which isn't as big an issue as a Pyro attacking with his flamethrower while in the water where he can't light people on fire (thus preventing a light and escape strategy) and most force himself towards the surface where he has a harder time finding and reaching his opponents, then maybe it's not so bad.

This isnt really up to debate unfortunately. Believe me, the SF/Admin Trainer guys have discussed this particular issue with Council. Firing the flamethrower into the water itself, where players expect to be safe from any fire damage, bottom line is: We dont allow it.

For the eGs and up:

First thread discusses the exploit, the second thread has a response from a SF/Admin Trainer on this matter.
