I'm building a PC for a friend. I've recieved all the parts and put it together. Mind you, this is not the first time I've built a PC and the others work just great. I've run into a series of problems with this build.

When I went to install the video card drivers, things started to get choppy. The CPU would rev when I would scroll through web pages, and colors and shapes would appear where they aren't supposed to. Everything just running very laggy until it ultimately stops working. At first, we thought the PSU wasn't giving enough juice. It was marginally close, so I upped the wattage from 500 to 750.

Problem, I thought, was solved.
It persisted.

Next I thought it could just be a faulty graphics card. Finally got a replacement for it, only to find that it STILL continues to load slowly and the graphics are all jumbled. Things look fine in VGA mode, albeit run slowly.

Please someone help! I'm pulling my hair out here. The only thing I can think of is that the PCIe slot is busted or something. Any ideas?

Post this at EVGA.com, they have some of the most tech friendly members. They haven't failed me once when it comes to computer mysteries.

Did you disable onboard vga? Are you using the drivers that came with the GPU, or are you using the latest ones?

I would definitely check out the RAM. This sounds like a memory problem.

There isn't any on-board VGA. It recognizes the 2 GB of RAM, so I'm assuming the RAM is okay. I can swap them out just to be certain though...

The problem occurs before or after you installed the new set of video card drivers? If it's after, then maybe the drivers are the culprit.

Sounds like a faulty motherboard. Make sure you have the latest BIOS for the board if that does not work time to replace it

The drivers that came with the card were installed which are old. When I was told there was an issue, I updated them to the lasted drivers to no avail. Changing the video card later on did not help. BIOS updates also proved ineffective. I'm thinking I have a faulty board here... :\

Update:

So I replace the motherboard with a new one, and I still have the same issue. After wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows and all that, It still runs slow and choppy. The only two things I haven't replaced yet are the CPU and RAM. I'm tired of spending money to return parts that aren't broken. I really have no clue why it's doing this...

Also, the PSU is 750W with a 45A 12V rail. More than enough to cover the power needs.

Make sure your OS is fully up to date, also check the Ram arrangement, some motherboards need the ram arranged in a certain order to run effectively. next, nvidia and ati both offer card adjustment tools for over clocking that also give valuable temperature and clock speed information that can show you if its not working right with the drivers i.e. seriously low bus speeds and or/ overheating. then just adjust your card, also check your card compatibility stats with you hard ware and make sure everything works with your Graphics card, and if all else fail, call the video card manufacturer and say hey, you guys suck or how do i get this thing to work so i can go back to my day job

I have to agree here. I have built a few myself.. At first glance I would say video drivers but if you have checked those then I think its a MoBo issue. Replace and let us know!

*edit* well I just seen the second page and you replaced the board. In your first post you said the CPU is working overtime? Have you checked the usage to find out what its running in idle? Also if the memory is being recognized there usually isn't an issue with it. I dunno man....

I would say try to boot with a live CD such as linux or Windows/BartPE. If it loads and works it is a problem with the OS or Hard disk.

I'm leaning toward the hard drive being faulty. Same thing happened to me when I rebooted my computer, the hard drive I was installing Windows to had problems, which caused it to run choppy, to the point where it would take 5 minutes to bring up Firefox.
Hopefully you get this fixed man, it's a bummer having a bad part.

well we still dont know what kind of motherboard or ram or cpu or gpu you are using
sounds to me like a bios configuration conflict kind of like the ram is not getting enough
juice or maybe the video card in the wrong slot. please post a detailed spec of the computer!!
