It's not free but it is a lot faster, this has nothing to do with the technology other than the ISP's in North America don't want to spend the money to upgrade their systems and not be able to increase what they charge.

They are probably using fiber optic cables because of the dense population and short distance they need to cover

Jap internet is VASTLY superior to our own. I had a friend who was there for three months doing foreign exchange. He would average about 8 MBps down and 1 MBps up on a standard residential connection.

Japan has the best download/upload in the pacific.Speed is great and also they upgrade nearly every mth or 2.

I've been there on several occasions and it IS that fast, although it's NOT free unless you're using a public hotspot.

I just got my internet upgraded to 10mps...but i bet they have that beaten by a long shot.

Its fiber optics, blackhawk is right, they actually use one of the biggest data transmitters since its a small population.
