*Make sure to always look down as far as it will let you go before you jump--this will also decrease the ammount of damage that you take.
*Wait until the height of your jump before firing your rocket for maximum height of your rocket jump.
*If you want your jump to be for distance, but not go super high, turn around while running, jump backwards and fire the rocket a little in front of your feet as you jump.
*For wall jumping get against the wall and fire a rocket to get the best height possible for you--use the first tip to help. Then aim a little in front of your feet while still moving upward and continually shoot your rockets. (To find the perfect spot in front of your feet to fire the rockets you'll just have to play with it a little) If you want to launch backwards while wall jumping than aim it directly in front of you and fire.
I'm not that great at wall jumping....so that tip is just what I know. But the most important thing about rocket jumping in general that makes people lose so much height is not looking down as far as you can before jumping. This GREATLY increases your height and decreases the damage you take.
