I finally jumped from my many-years old P4 3GHz to the i7 920. I bought it customized from Cyberpower PC, one of our sponsors. Much much much better. Amazingly better. I got it for about the same price I could build it, maybe a bit cheaper including shipping. Here's what I got:

CPU: i7 920 w/ Vigor Monsoon III cooler
6 GB DDR3 1333 RAM Corsair
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P MB
ATI 4870 1GB Video
Vista Home Prem 64 (not impressed, will be upgrading to Win 7)
Generic 1000W PSU
Free HALO 2 and FarCry 2
Free T-shirt and laptop case

I also bought separate a 22" Acer monitor for $150.

Apparently, there is a flicker problem with the ATI 4870 vid card. You have to reduce the mem speed from 925 to 900 to get rid of it.

Otherwise, very nice rig for a very good price. It does take a little while for them to build it tho, but less than a week. This is a good alternative for those who know how to build a comp (like me) but don't want to go thru the motions (again, like me).

Bigwilly, congratz on a new computer :P
Whats your FPS on the basic games like DoD:S, TF2, or CS:S? Those 3 games only FPS i can imagine, so please tell me. Plus, how fast do you feel your system is?

I'll say he gets 250, easy!

I only play TF2 of those listed. I typically get b/w 150-300 fps depending on the action, but will drop down below that in heated battles when ubered against sentries. My biggest weakness is my internet.

Out of curiosity, what is the lower your fps dips on the Cashworks server when it's full and you're in a firefight?

I'm not him but I have a GTX 285 and it can get lower then usual. TF2 has tons of moving objects, the player models are detailed and stuff

I'll let you know. Haven't played Cashworks with the new comp, but it was downright awful with the old one

The GTX 285 is better than mine, so that's an ominus sign. I think the core 2 duo actually does better with TF2 as well since I don't think it's optimized for quad cores like Far Cry2 is. Check out how the core 2 duo shines on L4D: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3492&p=18

Actually, most of the CPUs compared on that site rock for L4D, so the diff in performance becomes negligible. For games of the future and longevity, however, best go with a quad core.

That Vigor Monsoon III cooler is a beast, they sell it on newegg, how well does it cool? (CPU temps), I've really considered purchasing either the Monsoon or the TRUE 120 Black...

Oh... and....Congrats on your shiny new PC! ^^

Lol. I'd much rather build a computer than wait anywhere near a week. Took me about 2 hours.

150 FPS!? WOW! I barley get 30 fps in the midest of actioN!!

Sounds like my old computer, maybe a little better actually. In heavy action, it looked like a slideshow, followed by mysterious death of courseO.O

Yeah, been there done that. Had to shop around to get the competitive prices, wait for all to come in, then put together followed by lengthy troubleshooting cuz something always goes wrong. Lazy this time *sigh*

Thx. the Monsoon cools well. I have the alarm set at 40 C and hasn't hit it yet. I've yet to overclock, which is what it is meant for. Pretty darn quiet for an overclock fan. I like very much.

Cashworks is brutal, almost cuts my fps in half compared to other maps. It's a killer. Dips into the 40s for heavier battles, still pretty smooth. Taxes my internet connection worse, tho - not smooth.

Not bad considering prices compared to Alienware (TOTAL OVERPRICED), those compaines like Cyberpower and Uberclok are MUCH better and give you more realistic prices. But yet again for $1600 bucks I could of put a HD 4870 X2 in there. :P
