Building a New Rig

Alright I am tired of 10 FPS in any game I play on my computer. Time to build a new beast.

I am not exactly a pro when it comes to computer hardware but I know a little bit.

I looked around and over the past few days have come up with the following list of parts.

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131340

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103244

Video Card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130424

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145184

Power Supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153052

Hard Drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822144122

CD/DVD Drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136152

Case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

First off yes I know it is an 80gb HD but that is all I need. The only two games I play on my computer are TF2 and WoW. Not only that I keep all my music and stuff on an external 500gb hard drive.

I was wondering what people think of it, any suggestions are welcome.

The biggest thing I am worried about is if the motherboard will fit into that case.

Also keep in mind that I am trying to not let this spill over $650 and right now it sits at $637.

Suggestions/tips welcomed and encouraged :D

You can shave off $50 by going for the Antec 300 instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042&Tpk=antec 300

The 9600GT you listed is $100. We can use that $50 saved from the case and opt for a Powercolor HD4850 at $135: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131125

For an extra $6, you can double your storage to a WD Caviar 160GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075

Sure you say you only need 80GB now, but extra internal storage won't hurt.

Everything else looks good.

Oh god I didn't even notice for $6 I could double up. Thanks for pointing that out!

Also the case downgrade just might be worth it.

The Video Card though... humm. I know I save money by downgrading my case but at the same time if I can safely shave off a few dollars I would love that so I might not spring for that ATI card.

I mean is it going to be a MAJOR difference between my 9600GT and the one you linked?

Absolutely. The Radeon HD 4850 is comparable to a GeForce 9800 GTX+.

keep in mind that powersupply doesNOt have a 8 pin mobo connector , only 4 pin , this is a MAJOR issue when running quadcore cpus , you have to have the 8pin cpu plug

That card is actually slower than a 9600GT. For a budget of ~$650, the best option would be a 4830.

Do you mean they are almost on equal grounds or is the 4850 VASTLY superior?

Remember I am trying to run TF2 and WoW. Nothing more.

Also Dream Theater rocks. ;)

Alternatively, you could grab a HD4830. It's cheaper than the 4850, and offers very similar performance.

Best thing is, there's a few on this page which are cheaper than the 9600GT you originally linked to: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...PA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=4830&x=0&y=0

Specifically, the MSI, HIS and Powercolor models.

Well, in all honesty I am kind of tired of ATI. I have used them for so long and I hate how unorganized Catalyst is. Bah, it could just be me. I think I just need a change of pace from my GPU and I hear eVGA nVidia cards are come of the best.

Well it says 20+4 pin and then others say just straight up 24 pin. I should shoot for a 24pin one or am I missing something

I would suggest spending a little more on the processor to avoid the "translation lookaside buffer" bug in first gen Phenom's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenom_(processor)

Go with this one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103286
Or any Phenom with XX50 as it's series, you want the B3 stepping not the B2 or BA.

 I looked up what you were saying and I must say thank you for it.

So if I got that first gen quad core I am pretty much looking at a 10% decrease of performance from what the box says. Not only that but system lock up, yikes...

But like I said before I am trying to shave costs as much as possible. I know I said my limit was $650 but if I can shoot well below that ($600 or less) that would be even more fantastic.

I was looking at tribple core CPU's. Now I know computers like to work in powers/multiples of 2 so by using a triple core do I risk not using one of the cores when doing certain things?

I am looking at this triple core: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103254

That will do you fine. I remember reading a review on those cpus and in games that use multithreading they did just as good or better than core 2 duos. If you can afford the little bit extra i would get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103648
It will be a lot faster. This looks like a solid low budget rig. One last thing. Do you already have a copy of windows to install? If not youll need to buy the builders cd off of newegg unless you plan to run linux.

yea , the board takes a 20+4 pin or 24pin plus a 8 pin for quadcore , this board will not run without the 8pin aswell , and that psu doesnot have 8pin

This user purchased this item from Newegg

Pros: Super quiet, loads of different connectors.
Cons: Does not have the P8 connector for newer motherboards. Only one PCI-e connector.
Other Thoughts: I didn't take a star away from this for its lack of P8 connector as it was my own dumb fault for not reading more carefully, but I did want to point it out in case someone was thinking of using this for a build.

Well like I said I don't need a ridiculous rig. I know that processor is faster but it is also $40 more.

Now the way this rig is being built is that I can always upgrade but as of the time I get it all I want is at least 40+ FPS in TF2 and WoW. Also realize I am running at 1024 x 769 and will probably get a monitor from a friend for free to do the next step up.

A lot of bench marks I see don't even do resolutions lower than 1960 x (some other number.)

Alright then what about this triple core?

BTW, your going to need a big hard drive if you play a lot of games, or dont want system lag. I only have 50 GB free, and I spike very hard in games a lot.

you need a powersupply with a 20+4 pin and a 8 pin either way , here is a link to one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010
this is what you need to have in the psu for that board
1 x Main connector (20+4Pin)
1 x 12V(4/8Pin)
its only like 60$ but any psu with those connectors will work

So then in this case

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182185

Would also work.

I would like to get the one I linked because right now its 69.99 +tax BUT there is a promo code to get $14 off of it and its a 630w PSU.

Somebody a few posts back showed me a 160GB HD for $6 more so I upgraded to that. Like I said all I will be playing is TF2 and WoW. So I am pretty sure I will have about 80-100GB of free space.
