multicore support!

I have noticed the source engine having problems with mutli core options. I have it with L4D now. Where the frame rate is well above 60 fps avg 80-120 but the game seems jitter and jerky. Like sudden movements on mouse without intentionally doing it. Also panning left to right you see it is not smooth. Skips like a record. Since enabling it on TF2 I saw a big jump in fps from 90-130 to 120-200 but was getting the same issues like in l4d. I have been talking with Valve and XFX my video card manufacture. Trying to find if the problem is the drivers, video card, or maybe just do a reformat and start over. Since it is barely being tested that could be why so many people are having issues. Heck even foxtrot who has multi-core was telling me on vent it wouldnt even let him change the option after updating the game.

70 - 100 fps increase here , so liek 270 - 340 or so fps now , and waaaaaay smoother in general ! no more crash's i played 5 hours now because it didnt crash , i depended on he crash as almost my alarm clock 2 stop playing rofl

hey , sounds liek screen tearing to me , enable vsync and fix this issue :)

I tried this myself and noticed an interesting result. The average FPS hovered around 95 and never got above 100. With the option disabled, I got much higher FPS 100-150. Strange....

I turned it on. And tf2 won't stop crashing now. It sucks. They need to fix it and have this be official mulitcore rendering.

I jumped on my desk in sheer glee when I heard this! Awesome!

Well, I'm not sure I get the purpose. I was already getting multicore usage before this was released and when I turn it on, my CPU usage goes from 30% to 50% and that's it as far as I can tell. So basically it just hogs more resources.

The way I see it, your CPU caught a HADUKEN! :D

Noticed a considerable FPS difference. I always play with vsync on because i notice the minute tearings. In parts where my game would drop to 50 fps from 60, it now stays a solid 60 no matter what. I did get a few crashes, which was frustrating so I turned it off for the time being, and it crashed again. Im thinking the source engine is unstable at the moment, and its not just the multicore rendering.

But major props to Valve for finally releasing this :D My quad core thanks you from the bottom of its overclocked heart. Cant wait for further updates that optimize this and maybe see this spread retroactively to other source games.

No It is not Tearing. I know what Tearing looks like. It is more of a lag issue. Where I want to point from let say point A to point be on the Screen and it just jumps randomly to another spot. I know it is not the mouse because I have tested different mice already and it was only with L4D as first but not TF2 when the multicore option is on. It doesn't happen all the time last nite i tried playing again and it was running fine with it on. Since it is still in testing I am sure it is just a bug the source engine has. Thanks for the input though.

lol why is everyone so happy about this? so your fps increased from 4x movie quality (which is so high you cant even tell its that good) to 12x movie quality (absolutely no change with your limited visual capabilities) now for the good news, you crash every five minutes!!! hooray, thanks for this useless, spring break hindering update valve, you ruined my day.

I'm gonna mess around with it today. Hopefully it'll lessen some of the framerate drops I'm getting on Black Mesa right now.

This has been long overdue. I've been having some problems with FPS lately, hopefully this will improve things. Hopefully I'll be able to start playing the game more actively again. :)

Who I see this update really helping is those people who just got those first dual core machines off the line, maybe have an older video card to go with them. The processor is a bigtime bottleneck for them, even as it is for those of us with brand spanking new computers (thus the significant FPS increase with MC rendering on). But, those folks with older machines, they might top out at 60 or 70 FPS. So, what happens when they get in a firefight with lots of effects going on? Hooray 20 FPS (or worse)!

But, with multicore rendering on, though they may not notice the top end jump from 60-70 to 90-100, they will definitely notice that bottom end jump from 20 FPS to 40 or 50.

Just something to think about. Plus, it's best that Valve gets this stuff figured out now. Eventually, since processors have reached a plateau for per-core speeds, we will need to utilize multiple core processors to run the games of the future.

Nice, about time we see multi-core support. Now they just need to fix the crashes and it will be perfect.

I can definitely tell a difference in FPS. It runs my game a lot more smooth. I have a medium-high end graphics card and sometimes it can get choppy. Now it runs smooth no matter what... except for the part where it crashes my game.
