A Question Regarding Classes

Well, as some of you but most definitely not a lot know, I play medic. I love medic! Ubercharge now! I am a crazed German mad scientist... so me...

But my point to this post is asking about some other classes that interest me, but I don't know a lot about.

1) Engineer: I hear they aren't useful anymore, as players got better but the sentry guns didn't? I also hear that they are really only welcomed in matches above 8v8, and are never in scrims or league play. I hear, too, that Engineers aren't welcome on defense unless they play "offensive engineer." My main question is just how useful are they anymore?

2) Heavy: Another class that I hear is completely underpowered. I hear it has nothing to counter but a lot of counters itself? I play heavy sometimes and enjoy it, but I don't want to pour hours into it if it's going to be all useless..

3) Pyro: They look so much fun! Everyone has heard the bad stuff about them... thoughts?

And just to make sure everyone understands, I am not making a bash on these classes, and I am not saying anything bad about it... I just hear this stuff and I go "Oh Noes!" so I figured I would ask you all!

Also as a side note, I just joined Edge Gamers Organization yesterday so thanks for the welcome I will look forward to ubercharging and wiping out their whole team with you all in the future :)

Well, my two most played classes are pyro and engineer, and you should probably know that I answer the questions from this perspective.

Engineer - I don't know who told you that they aren't useful as they can single handedly stop an entire team with a well placed sentry gun. Yes, if it gets plenty of kills it will get destroyed, but this makes the other team focus their attention on the sentry gun instead of the objective. And if it gets destroyed then Engie just moves on and builds a new one at another spot.

An engineer is a team player. He helps the team by slowing the other team with sentries. He speeds up his team with teleports. But he also needs a good team to help with defending the gun and giving him time to re-setup.

I don't know about league play, but I don't care that much. As far as playing offensive engineer. I often try to play offensively, but I usually see far more defensive engineers. I'm always grateful that when half our team dies there is an engie or two holding down the fort while we respawn.

AutoDMC is a good engineer to talk to for more.

Heavy - As a pyro, heavies are the most difficult class to take down. I can kill every other class with an axtinguish shot, but not the heavy. When I play medic, if I see a heavy I think "oh boy killing time." pretty much anyone who gets in front of that minigun is in trouble. This is offset by slow movement to make things fair.

The top guy in our hlstatsx plays heavy most often (I think)

TheRealMcCoy, Gortex, MedicHunter are good heavies to talk to.

Pyro - pyro is my favorite class. Yes there are plenty of pyros who constantly do suicide runs, running straight into enemies with flames ablaze and die, but take the time to learn to play pyro well and that works in your favor because people don't expect a really good pyro.

Pyro has a lot of advantages, but it takes some time (like any class) to learn to use them effectively:
1. Air blast - this is wonderful, rockets, nades, stickies, all go away. It can separate ubers, push people off cliffs and points, get them away so you can retreat, and put them in a corner primed for a good ax-ing. You can even use the air blast to rocket jump! There is a video of it on youtube.
2. getting sentries around a corner or on a ledge. If an engineer puts a gun just around a corner or on a ledge you can stand and burn it to the ground without getting hurt.
3. Ubers - as a medic I love ubering pyros, and as a normal player I fear the ubered pyro. There is no escape like with the soldier, heavy and demo--the pyro is just too fast!
4. the axtinguisher - If you can get good at it, the axtinguisher is an amazing weapon. I'm currently averaging more axtinguisher kills than flamethrower kills. I use the flamethrower more as a tool and the axe as the killing device.

Pyro is also incredibly satisfying:
1. you see a spy getting ready to backstab a teammate. You burn him, air blast him away from the back of your teammate, and then it's axe time!
2. You arrive late to a conflict over a point and the other team has a few guys on the point, but they have been damaged. You jump in and make short work of them.
3. Taunt killing snipers :-)

And what isn't fun about setting people on fire.

Masterpiece is a good pyro to get more from.

I think that about covers it. Oh, and welcome to eGO! I hope you enjoy it.

If you want to know about heavy, ask some of the really good heavy players, like hex or the bestest hwguy ever I see these two guys playing heavy alot and racking up the kills...as for engi, I dont have many tips and i think that =(eGO)=™ AutoDMC [C2T] plays engi...main thing is know sentry placement and how to spy check as engi imo. Pyro, usually w+m1 but try and ask djsatan or djsatanswife they are really good at pyro. Hope this helps.

=(eGO)=? AutoDMC [C2T]
Shush people, don't say he's a good engi... It's going to be embarassing if he has to proof that he's good at playing engineer. :p

Anyway, if the classes interest you, play them. Try them out and have fun. Engineers are fine, heavies are fine and so are pyros. You're playing on pub servers (eGO only has open public servers :)) so the engineer is not useless. The heavy is scary, too. He's just not liked in competetive gaming since he's so slow. That's why most teams field two soldiers instead of a heavy and a soldier in leagues. Pyro is another class that is fun to play in pubs.
This is a public game, it is designed to be a public game. While I like competetive TF2, that's just not how it was designed to be.
I can't stress this enough, if you like a class, no matter how many people tell you it's a crappy/useless class, play it.

Here is my advice:

Don't branch out. If you love medic and are a good medic, stick with it. There is no need to downgrade to a lesser class. Don't sell out to the crowd that says you need to be good with more than one class. A good medic can change the game. Trust me, play as medic and only medic.

(btw, I sorta like medic....just a little bit.)

Don't listen to other people, if you like a class play it. Even if it may be "useless". You'll eventually get better at any class regardless, just put some time into it.

Wow! So many replies! Well I am really liking Engineer now that I have sorta got the hang of it from this morning. I love playing my heavy when it's the right time. Anyway, yeah I think I like the support rolls a lot, medic, engineer...

Thanks for all the help and more people feel free to leave more comments! :)

There's a lot of fun to be had with heavy. You can rack up a lot of kills by just going out with a medic and killing everything that you can see in range. You may be slow, but you're fast enough to dodge rockets in narrow corridors and fast enough to zig zag enough to throw off newer snipers. The most important part of being a heavy is to spin up your gun when approaching corners, and to follow your target with your crosshair until he's dead. You can kill scouts and pyros extremely easily. I'd say heavies are a pyro counter, really. You can kill the pyro before he's killed you and have enough health to run to a medikit.

But don't stop playing medic. Us heavies need you guys ;).

Well im on my way out but ill give my 2 cents about these classes

1. Engy - knowing good sentry placements and using the line of sight properly can easily hold back enemies for a while. Just randomly throwing your gun down and start hitting it will result in you not getting any points ;)

2. Heavy - one of my favorites when i get in the groove, depending on the map a good heavy+med combo is unstoppable, heavy seems like an easy class to play but you would be suprised, there are some baaaaad heavies out there, when there isnt any heavies on my team i usually play DH (designated heavy ;))

3 Pyro - good class to start playing the game with because it is pretty straight forward (literally) but pyro IS a class you can be good at with practice, using the airblast and axtinguisher properly can be devestating.

Heavies are powerful and especially combined with a medic, I sometimes play heavy and then massive killing sprees will come. just be careful for the snipers, they will have your head in no time (I know because usually I target the heavies first, because they are just so easy to snipe). Also turn around a lot to check for spies.

But the latest update made the minigun spread less, but untill then, the heavy alone was no competition to a good demoman.

Sandman made it also more difficult to play as a heavy but overhealing will prevent you from being killed easily then while stunned.

Engineers are still seriously useful. The key is to make sure (if on defense) to see where the enemy is going, and put your SG there. The SG, if placed and tended well, can funtion like an iron wall that prevents most every other class outside the spy from getting past it. In such situations it requires true teamwork on the opposing side to take it out, and it requires true teamwork to stop them from doing that.

Take 2fort, for example. Let's say you have an SG from another NG in the courtyard. You, as an NG, can then assist that Engineer in protecting his stuff by putting the SG in the lobby. Suddenly any incoming heavy-medics have to waste their uber on your SG, only to be completely wiped out by your friend's when they get to the courtyard.

Let's say it's just you alone in the courtyard. One uber is going to put your SG out. How can you stop it? In most cases, you cannot. But your friends can. The offensive types can go force the incoming enemies to waste their uber, or a lone pyro can even airblast a heavy backwards enough that he can't do anything to you, or another NG could come and help you repair your SG (in most cases a number of engineers working on one SG can outlast most ubers). There are a lot of possibilities.

Engineers are still effective, it's just that they are quite likely one of the most team oriented classes in TF2. If you have a good team supporting you, you'll set. If, on the other hand, you do not have a supportive team, in most cases you can get on good enough, but if the other team gets their act together than yes, it is probably going to be like you said.

Pyro + backburner = instakill mobs of people from behind. Just learn ambush spots and practice strafing sentries. Nothing's more fun than sneaking up on a heavy and dropping him while he's being healed.

A good to way to defend your sg from demoman stickies, the demoman can only shoot 1 sticky at a time, and your shotgun can destroy it as fast as they are shooting them.

Only problem, pipes are my main weapon to kill sgs, and other smart demoman will hit the detonate button if he sees the engie will destroy it.

If you ever have any doubt as to engineer's usefullness, play stage 3 goldrush on offense, or play badwater basin on offense or defense. Teleporters alone justify an engineer's prescence, and dispensers and guns just help fortify and resupply the front line.

Heavy: Pyros hate 'em. If, as a pyro, you can get a jump on a heavy and axtinguish him twice while he's on fire, he'll go down. But, one quick flick of the wrist and Sasha is pointed at you and you're chewed up in half a second. Scouts or anyone else just trying to get somewhere loathe Natascha as well. The real counters are spies and snipers, and the heavy just has to do his best to avoid them, or in the case of the spy, be vigilant.

Pyro: W+M1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!!!oneone!11!~!!!oen1!!!eleventy!

you kept on telling me where to build my sentrys (not an insult but more of a thanks, engineers aint my good point), so i reckon you've got the hang of the engie

The problem with engineer is most people don't know how to play one. They think an engineer is all about the sentry gun. And that's where they're wrong. Engineers are all about the team.

Sentry Guns are like having an extra heavy on your team that's rooted to one spot.

Dispensers are like having an extra resupply closet wherever you want it.

Teleporters! There's just no analogue for these. You can let your entire team get from point A to B in no time at all.

Good engineers use these three tools to help their entire team. Now great engineers, those are the ones that realize they still have weapons beyond these and learn to use them. When you can take down a heavy/medic combo with your shotgun/pistol/wrench while simultaneously killing others with your sentry and healing/teleporting your team, then you know you're a great engineer.

Oh, and if you play engineer enough, you'll begin to pity enemy spies.

Everyone has heard the bad stuff about them... thoughts?

1. Engies are still useful. It's not too difficult to take out a sentry (spies, ubers, demomen, soldiers, scouts using the drink). But without engies, defense would be nothing. They're kinda boring to play. I usually play them when I'm eating or doing homework.

You might want to look into offensive engying. That's really fun and annoys the poop out of the enemy team.

2). I can't really say too much about the heavy. My worst class. But I have friends that always play heavy who haven't complained about it. Sure, the scout's new ball is a big bummer to the heavy but that's just a small obstacle.

3). Pyros... I never understand people who say they're skill-less. There are other players that are more skilled at playing pyro then others, just like there are people who are skilled at playing sniper more than others (Voided). I've heard people say snipers are skill-less too though... since all they do is stand far away and pick people off.

Typically, I ignore these people. Pyro is a good starting class for a new player because the other classes are harder to master, but try mastering the airblast. I've seen videos of pyro using the airblast to rocket jump, now that was cool.

It seems the only people who complain about pyros are the ones who die by pyros. But if they can't beat a "skill-less" class, doesn't that mean they're less skilled than the pyro?

Meh. Just my two cents. I hardly ever play the pyro but there are good pyros out there.

you kept on telling me where to build my sentrys (not an insult but more of a thanks, engineers aint my good point), so i reckon you've got the hang of the engie

Haha yeah I know. I tend to get into the game a lot and I like to give suggestions that would work best for the whole team.

On the topic of Engies:

Trust me I know.. teleporters and dispensers are very very important.. I see the sentry as a way of guarding your dispenser and exit, and a way of securing a small area so your team has a "base" so to speak and so they can fall back and resupply... I provide that when I play engineer and I love it.

And trust me... ask anyone who was on the 2fort server with me earlier... I had a sentry and dispenser up, and I was WRENCHFU-ing everyone who passed by!

*ehem*

YOU SHALL NOT PASS!

What you've described is a problem with all classes; everyone is better. People run and juke making sniping harder. People are looking behind them, an watching for teammates acting stupid, making spy harder. The three classes you mentioned, however, are assumed to be "n00b classes." Engies just turtle, Pyros just W+1, Heavies just walk around and shoot things. However, these classes have tactics, and as the general population of players get better, these tactics become more important.

There's a reason why my avatar is a humorous allusion to Engineer :)

Kinda right; players have gotten better. But sentries are still an aimbot with two Sashas and a rocket launcher. So as a few people have said, it's no longer sufficient to plop down a sentry and a dispenser and jam a piece of paper into the "crouch" and "hit with wrench" buttons and go eat a sandvich.

I'm conceited, so I highly recommend my own post, here: http://www.edgegamers.org/forums/showpost.php?p=498845&postcount=17

As has been said, Engineer is a TEAM player, even more than any other class. You build sentry guns... to keep other people and things safe. You build dispensers... to heal and equip other people. You build teleporters... to move other people forward.

If you try to play an Engineer all by your lonely, it'll be sad, sad, sad.

Add myself, Captain Calle, and Captain Kraken to your steam friends, and scope out a server with us. I'm not saying we're the best, but if you can Engineer with myself and Calle also Engineering, you'll see what teamwork and sentries can do, even now that spys can sit on dispensers cloaked and scouts can bonk Engies.

2) Heavy: Another class that I hear is completely underpowered. I hear it has nothing to counter but a lot of counters itself? I play heavy sometimes and enjoy it, but I don't want to pour hours into it if it's going to be all useless..

Underpowered?

UNDERPOWERED?

You, sir, have obviously not played on Black Mesa and/or Warpath with some of the pro Heavies we have around. These guys AVOID BONK BASEBALLS and fill people with about 100,000 dollars worth of custom tooled cartridges WHILE EATING SANDVICHES.

The Heavy Weapons Guy is a wall of death... when played correctly. Only spin up when you think you're going to kill things. Have your fists or shotty out instead.

Pair up with a buddy. Medics are the most usual Heavy Buddy, but a Soldier or a Pyro can support you as well. As have been said, the Heavy moves slowly but while causing a lot of pain. A more mobile character, who can help keep an eye around you and flush out enemies while you're attacking is golden.

I've been bonked by a Scout, and had the poor fool walk right into the rocket of my friendly local Soldier.

You're only real problem is snipers, but with planning you can avoid them. Snipers get easy marks with Heavies who W+2 everywhere they go, walking so slowly. Remember, snipers need a charged headshot to kill Mssr. Heavy. Bodyshots won't do enough, and uncharged headshots are survivable in many circumstances. So have your shotty out and run through dangerous areas, and even if you get hit, a sandvich or a medic can solve that problem.

3) Pyro: They look so much fun! Everyone has heard the bad stuff about them... thoughts?

DJSATAN. DJSATANSWIFE. TCVINSKY. CHRIS DA WOLF.

And these are just the ones I have too many killcam shots of.

They key about pyro is that many people BELIEVE he's just W+1. And on n00b servers, you can get away with that. But as EvilDaudilus says, you're a giant walking beacon hen you're flamethrowering, requesting every class to kill you quick.

The best pyros are the pyros you never see... the ninja pyros. To be a ninja, you have to know the alternate routes on all the maps, so you can take a less known path, pop out above people, and fry 'em up all nice and crisp while they still don't know what's going on. And toasted sandviches are the best.

If you want to do W+1, don't do it. Pyro is about sneaking off to the side and ambushing people. My favorite tactic with them is on, say, Badwater Basin, hanging out by the tunnel, waiting for a rush to come through, and then running in and shoving the whole team back out the other end of tunnel with my wall 'o flame.

TL;DR: In conclusion

TF2 is unlike any other game on the market, except maybe TF: Classic, Quake Team Fortress, or Fortress Forever. Unlike, say, Day of Defeat or Quake III Arena, every class is more than just a different character model with a funny looking gun. Every class has it's completely own different playstyle. You can't play a Medic like a Pyro, or a Scout like a Sniper. They're all way different.

If you play on a n00b server, you can rack up the kills with a Sentry, Flamethrower, or a Sasha. This is because the other guys haven't figured out that there is a viable tactic other than W+1 (or +1 for Engineer) and just rush into your waiting death.

Once you get into the real world, however, you have to play your classes strengths against the other classes weakness. Every encounter changes: what you do as a Pyro against a Soldier (flaregun, airblast his rockets, axe him a question when you get close enough) is completely different against, say, a Scout and a Medic.

The combinations are astronomical, and every encounter is different, and there comes a time when W+1 fails, and the n00bs complain that their easy class now "sucks." But it just means they need class based tactics. You can't "n00b tube" your way through TF2 life.

Also as a side note, I just joined Edge Gamers Organization yesterday so thanks for the welcome I will look forward to ubercharging and wiping out their whole team with you all in the future :)

Welcome! Can't wait to see you around!

I'm special! :D (Now I have to proof something I can't prove, right ...?)

Hell, even TF2 is nothing like TF, TFC or FF! It's true though, you're probably not going to find another game where the classes are so different.
