Does anyone have tips / tricks
to become a better soldier?

I love being a soldier, but im not
the best player :blushing:

What can i do to improve my skills,
or what tips do you have regarding
targetting ?

Eventhough i shoot people,
im mostly the one ending up dead

Hmm well soldier isn't my primary class and I don't know how much you know but I'll give a couple tips how I at least keep my k/d in the positive.

First off aim for the enemy's feet. You only get 4 shots before that slow reload so you need to make them count. Any time I'm fighting I'm constantly jumping back and forth to get that bit of an angle to shoot the rockets to their feet. If you hit them at least once and they are not a heavy try to finish them with the shotgun rather than reloading as it takes too long. Second while you have 200 health you are real slow so try to stay back from them and let your rockets do the damage.
For me rocket jumping is my favorite soldier pasttime and I make a habit of using it to get on various perches and spam rockets down on my foes. Use the same principle in doorways, move to the left or right and spam either side of the entrance as pyros often like to hide behind there with those backburners.
As for sentries if they are far away just spam all 4 rockets at it and you have a good chance of taking it down. If they are around a corner and facing away from where you will enter strafe out fire 1 shot and strafe back to safety. Give 2 seconds for the sentry to return to its original facing then do the second rocket. The third rocket should kill it unless it has an engineer at which point you will just need to find another route.
Also I find as a soldier I prefer the kritz to the uber from medics since a crit rocket explodes pretty much any foe gooey. Crits don't do any extra damage to sentries but you really just have an uber heavy or demo for those anyways as a soldier only gets 4-5 rockets per uber and they may not take that sentry down. Also my personal favorite, Get a kritz medic on defense when you have setup time, wait outside the enemies doors hidden and when they come down hit kritz and start spamming through the entrance, if you are lucky you'll see 1 or 2of those fully charged uber medics die before they activate.

I know there are much better soldiers in eGO than me so I'm sure htey will post more tips for you soon.

Jump whenever you shoot. Gives you a better angle, and splash damage, both from your rockets or theirs, is slightly lower.

Learn how to rocket jump for distance, not height. Use RJing to plan ahead and if you need to get out of a battle, do it.

That's all I've got. Shoot them before they shoot you.

Kascade, we need you. ):

Soldier, is likely my best class. I guess to deal with each area individually first.

Class wise, Your biggest, and often toughest targets to deal with will be based on where you are fighting. A scout has you at a disadvantage in an open area usually, just as a demo or heavy will fighting where you can't take advantage of cover. Learn weapon sounds and how they look, as the pyro can counter your best manner of attacks in a direct manner (the airblast) or leave you wondering how you died (Backburner) With heavy, its wether to engage from long range, or to pepper around a corner. Natascha really hurts you just the same as sasha (though beat a quick retreat to any cover with any crits either way, distance doesnt reduce the damage they do.) If the heavy has a medic with him (many will, often buddies), you want to stop his life line, and to do that, you have one of the best tools long or shot range to do so. If you are at long range, your aiming for your 3rd/4th rockets to hit and make him run taking his heavy with him. (or to use that uber early, both help you and your team) The first shot is towards him, aiming to the ground, looking at where your firing, guess where he will run to, and time that 2nd immediate fire so that he either stays put, bunkers behind the heavy, or runs towars rocket #3 and #4. If he bunkers, then you have an easy target aiming behind the heavy.

They pyro, sadly, or not, depending on which class you ask has a good counter to your rockets, though not all users are super at using the anti-rocket weapon. The two big things that favor you in the fight, is the cost of the airblast (at 25 ammo, its very pricey) and its refire rate. You can fire faster than the reflect is, maybe 1-2 rockets of the four can be bounced back depending on distance. (longer distances mean more reflects if you space the firing) Another is where you hit the floor on a pyro, if you aim before, even if you use more rockets, you can stop his forward momentum (instead of hitting the back and sending him flying flamer first into you.)

Medics, normally, are not an issue, exceptions being when you have the charge after killing their buddy and are low health/ammo. Crits have changed, with ranged maxing out at 4% i think, but melee is unchanged, so that ubersaw/bone saw, can easily have a near 30% (melee carries a double crit chance) The advantage to you, is having killed somone, if you can connect with your shovel (if you choose to) All it will take is one hit to down him. The other alternitive is the ever trusted shotgun, at close range, one, maybe 2 good hits will take him down without his blutsauger peppering you.

Demomen, fall into two varieties, the first being the sticky bomb men. They lack understanding of what a grenade is, and will use the sticky ad-hocly as a ghetto rocketlauncher, usually, depending on where, you want to shove him back into a corner and either use that shotgun, or juggle him with a rocket/shotgun combo as once airborne, he often is at odds with damage given the recent nerf. (it takes about 5 seconds from when it hits the ground to start upping on the damage) You can, situation, permitting, try taking to the skies in a jump and bombarding from above, but your aiming at a long rjump, not air time, so he can't land stickies at your spot to reduce you to soldier mustard. The Piping scotsmen, is the other, and will often have traps waiting here and there, but use the grenade to nail you from close range, or odd angles. And can trick you into walking over missed grenades. Situational awareness, helps avoid them, and often circle around a corner first, rather than going straight through, to avoid a set sticky trap, to help nail him.

Scouts, can be a love or hate affair, depending on what they use. The sandman nerf (thank god) makes you take half damage, but with fan, you can expect about a 50-75hp hit after getting stunned with one, if your in the open, taking a sniper round too if they are around. Best bet, if you see a sandman scout, is the juggle with the rocket, is a death blow to them, once you send them up, send a second rocket, or shotgun if your out to drop them. Bonk, you will mostly see them trying to use running away or by you to get to health/ammo, and just physically blocking them, with rocket/shotgun makes them retreat if your in a narrow spot, but try to tie them up in movement, as they lose the biggest advantage they have once it wears off in 5 seconds, Speed.

Snipers, very little overall you can do on the longer parts, but sometimes, you get lucky forcing the corner ones by launching a rocket or two to shift. If your closer, but not enough that you can hit them with a rocket in time, use the shotgun to foul the aim if they are on your level, the shells can give you the close range you need to use the rocket without taking a lead brain replacement. (Its not an always to note here, a good one can wait in that pause and get you, but it helps against most.)

Your biggest counter, are other soldiers, and duels are about prediction, and accuracy, the better of the two usually wins. (Where is he going, and where do i hit with rocket to send him up to juggle?) I can only guess to say, put yourself in his shoes, and ask, "What would I do in his shoes?" I hope that helps, but really, win or lose here, its always fun for dueling another soldier.

Now onto spies, and about detection. Its not all inclusive, and sadly, there are some truly great spies whom still find me a personal knife repository (Captain Calle, whom ive still yet to get a 1-1 kill/death ratio with) But the biggest ones i can offer, Is that no spy can use an unlock weapon in disguise. Spies as medics, do not have an uber gauge. Spies currently can see health when disguised, so get a bit more speculative when you are lower health, for many will pistol you for a quick kill rather than knifing. Watch ammo respawns and weapon drops from kills, if you see one mysteriously vanish, an enemy spy just nabbed it. Another spot, if your holding an area, always keep the ammo respawn out, to force a spy to wait or hold enough to push by or try to get you with low cloak. The spy in water, will make bubbles, out of it for a few seconds, will drop in cloak. (Easy kills both times usually) Keep an eye out for spies that hang on top of an engie dispenser to recharge cloak in busy spot (Jump through to test as habit, if your stopped, hit the dispenser with rocket) Another note, is when you see a friendly leap towards you from the stairs, jump back, as its a trick to stair stab for some spies as a quick kill.

Engineer, it depends first if you have the sentry guard, or the roamer. The first is often parked right behind the gun, and with dispenser supporting him health wise, both level 3 usually. Take out the dispenser first if possible, it robs him of a huge stash of health/ammo/metal. and usually can let you petter to the side of the gun to kill him, then the gun with ease. (set up he went with permitting of course) Calle can likely give you better tips as an engie how soldiers destroy guns, and the tips engies have to stop soldiers. I'm not really the best at explaining how i do it.

Next is dealing with attacking from the skies. Rockets deal a self damage of roughly 41 points, give or take a few points. Rocket jumping, and attacking from the air, you have the advantage hands down for two reasons, first is that your aiming angle is so much better for prediction (more on that in a moment) and that you are far far harder to hit on a good jump along with the fact not that many people look up. (If your above or have a hidden vantage point to fire down from) When you are looking down, the fact you can see how they are moving is much more like a map, and even where they want to go by weapon turning, or the backpedaling, and shoot so that they munch on mister rocket.

I hope these tips help, and enjoy a class valve wants to nerf more before too long.

Yeah, height advantage is huge for covering the soldier's flaws: move speed and a relatively clunky weapon when it's out of close range. You can sneak up on people, ambush, and stay safely away from encounters you don't want any part of (like against a good compression blast pyro).

Get close, jump alot, and crit as much as possible.

Hi

For learning how to aim I would suggest practicing on tr_airshot_v0 map. With the rocket launcher not being an instant hit weapon, you need to learn to aim where a player is going and not where they are at. This map helps alot with that.

Thanks a lot so far for all your replies ;)

but me being a dutchie im not familiar with the words

Crit and Rjing :O
Whats ment with that?

@ Ack: thanks i will try that map for sure :)

Crit - A critical hit, one of those rockets that comes out of your launcher with blue flame and a funny noise. It was a joke, actually, as you can't control when crits are going to come. Soldiers' crit rockets are just devastating, though, they can one shot just about any class, or two shot if followed up with another rocket.

Rjing- Rocket Jumping.
Basically jump up and shoot a rocket at your own feet. It will propel you upwards, allowing you to jump up to places you normally couldn't reach, or propel you forwards. It takes some practice to get good at it.

Ack had some good advice. You have to learn how to lead your targets. One of my favorite tactics is to shoot a rocket at an enemy's feet, causing them to pop up into the air and then shoot another rocket as they land. They can't control their movement very well and you can predict where they'll land.

Boil it down to one word (well, two, in a compound word configuration): Splashdamage.

As a Soldier, do not I repeat do not attempt to hit people with your rockets. Rockets are slow, they crawl across the map. Unless you're shooting a heavy spinning his gun or a sniper with his back turned, almost anyone can avoid a rocket.

Your job is to hit NEAR the bad boy and splash damage ONTO him. That's why everyone says "hit his feet!" (1) you can knock the baddy into the air, and (2) you're splashing damage all over him.

Once you realize you don't need to hit the guy, just hit near him, Soldier is easier and more fun.

The other biggest skill is: tracking. Get used to tracking people as they walk, and predicting where they will most likely be a second from now and shooting THERE. You want the rocket to intercept them as they run. Spam where you THINK they will be with splash damage planned to appear just when they hit the point.

Control Points are your friend, as if a baddy is running to your control point, you not only know where they are going, but they're confined to dodging within a small space if they actually want to cap.

Get on practice maps, i believe that map posted is the one im talking about...its a map with alot of bots just jumping in one spot and practice aiming at their feet then shooting them in mid air.

First thing to learn is shooting at peoples feet. second thing is rocket jumping. third thing is prediction aiming. fourth thing is shooting people after you shoot their feet. 5th thing is learning not to blow yourself up alot....I'm still figuring that one out.

Tips and advice updated for help. And i hope it does, I'm DCL [C2T] on the ego servers, usually the regular 2fort server if you see me on, feel free to ask.

Find places where you can snipe sentries without it seeing you. If there's an engineer, take out the dispenser and the engy first, then shoot the sentry.

...5th thing is learning not to blow yourself up alot....I'm still figuring that one out.
LMAO! Now thats something
that never happend to me (yet!)

Again everyone thanks for the helpfull replies
i will go practise the tips.

@ DCL: Thank you for the detailed post,
i haven't played 2fort yet (im a dustbowl addict)
but i will try 2fort soon, so i might see you there ;)

If you pop them up in the air, and aren't able to hit them with another rocket coming down make sure to use your shotgun and get a few hits on them. Then shoot another rocket at there feet and its basically over with.

A few more tips... when fighting against most people, shoot a rocket ahead of them, then behind them. Most of the time one or the other will hit.

If you aim at a person's feet with your rocket and they do get hit, it will blow them up into the air. Immediately fire a rocket at where you figure they're going to land.

Go practice with rockets on an empty map, they're slow as molasses and you need to lean how long it takes them to get from point A to B.

Reload, reload, reload. Always reload after shooting a rocket if you don't see any enemies.

Learn to use your shotgun.

Also, a note:
Pyros can deflect your rockets back at you at half the rate you fire them, so if you're both standing still and shooting, you can get half your rockets shot back, if one or both of you are retreating while firing, then the pyro usually has enough time to reflect all four of your rockets back.

Just be glad most pyros use the backburner and/or don't know how to deflect rockets.
