What made you guys get better?

I see a lot of people writing "read guides" or "watch videos" ect ect. Doing that stuff never helped me at all because you can watch and read all you want, but it still wont give you the experience needed to be good at a class. You can learn strategy that way, but when you learn how to implement that strategy into your game play is when you become a skilled player.

I personally got really good at medic by listening to advice of other medics and picking up experience as I went. 50 hours is just scratching the surface, get out there and play! ^.^

And it was already mentioned, but learning to stay alive is really important. You'll get a lot more points if you learn how to stay alive for long periods of time. Pick and chose your fights and weigh whether or not it's worth it to storm into a group of 5 people by yourself. Also pick one class and master it.

When playing, I relax and just have fun. I laugh at dieing as much as I laugh at killing.

As a medic I try to never stop moving. Lots of running and jumping :P.
As a Pyro, sometimes running in and burning them down doesn't always do the trick. At times I just have to play the annoying pyro by peaking around a corner and burning them just enough to push them back.

When I do charge in, especially as a pyro, I try and run around them so that I am facing their back constantly. Makes it hard for them to hit you.

As a soldier, try not to aim your rockets at them. Rely only on splash damage. Hitting the ceiling above them, or shooting at their feet. Try and predict ahead of time which direction they are moving and shoot just ahead of them.

Other times, you may need to finish them off with your alternate weapon. As a Pyro, use a shot gun at a distance if running up to them will put you at risk. (I sometimes run up to them anyways :P)

Hope some of this info helps.

Dance.

aka. doge incoming shots and crits. Also hopping around makes you a harder target for spies.

Just relax and have fun! Listen when somebody gives advice and try to do things to help your team. I die way more than I kill so I just roll with it. I like to play pyro and try to be as much of a pain to the other team as possible. I go in with the idea that I may not kill a lot but I am gonna make the other team weak and my team can come in and get the easy kills pushing us toward our goal. Take out teleporters and medics. You can rarely kill someone with a medic on them and it's the same for your teammates so take out that medic. As a medic your job is to stay alive at all costs and heal as many teammates as possible. As an engineer get that tele up and a dispenser to heal and provide ammo. As you learn to support the team you will get better! It just takes time and patience.

Huh

A lot of my fellow eGO members have suggested that you stick with mastering one class. I'm not sure I agree.

Personally, I recommend keeping a hand in ALL classes. At some point, you're going to figure out which class you're best at, which is fine. Play that more than the other classes, sure, but as you get better in general due to practice, go back to the other classes. You'll be surprised how much you figure out, especially in terms of matchups.

With experience in all the classes, you'll be less surprised in general. It helps to think: "If I were playing that class, what would I do?" and anticipate what your opponent is going to do next.

Also, those killcams are not just for humiliations and screenshots. When you are inevitably killed, try to figure out why. How did that pyro get behind the team? What is that engie doing to preserve his sentry? What did that heavy do when he knew you were around the corner?

Finally? Have fun. Chill out. More than anything else, TF2 is just a wacky, fun, and challenging game, so remember to treat it that way, alright? I look forward to seeing you on the servers.

PS. One final tip: Come hell or high water, no matter what class you are, DON'T STOP MOVING. Except when I'm on the other team. In that case, try to look consistently in a single direction at all times. You know, just in case ;)

Being good in TF2 in not about mastering a single class. Being that it's TEAM Fortress, there are times when you need to switch classes to make the team work better as a whole.

Look at my stats for example - http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197972629057/stats/TF2 (Everything number is legit except for Pyro's points/destructions, Medic kills/healed, and Scout life)

I have everything pretty damn close in play time, except Demoman. Now I excel at Demoman, but that doesn't mean I can't hold my own as other classes. Honestly, I don't consider anyone 'good' at this game until they understand all the classes.

To understand the strategy and role of each class within a game is EXTREMELY important. Because not only do you understand what you have to do, but you understand what the other team is trying to do.

Also, understanding and knowing the lay out of maps is EXTREMELY important. It gives you the upperhand and you know what's most effective in stopping/destroying the enemy. Knowing where medpacks and ammo packs are is important. Lets say I'm losing a fight 1 on 1 with someone, but they give me a shot at grabbing a medpack. Now I have the upperhand because they will probably have to reload at some point and seeing the enemy grab free health can be a blow to their confidence.

(Paragraph on knowing how to survive, when it's best to retreat, push forward, etc.)

I could go on and on, but the best way to sum it all up is... You just need to play, sure you suck now, but you are playing with people that have been playing this game for over a year for the most part. I have around 30ish days played total of TF2... you have a little over 2 days. Don't be discouraged.

^^^
Also not every class is suited for a certain stage of a map, then it would be a good time to switch so you can help the team more.

I have 187 hours as a spy, and about 400 hours total in-game, and I still suck.

But I enjoy it anyway.

^^ lol that goes double for me, i die alot (although i think im getting slightly better as i play) and cant do squat half the time.

heres something to remember: if your REALLY REALLY doing bad there is a fall back plan, play engineer for 5-10 minutes, that might help

Well,it dosen't mean that you have to win the game for it to be fun, just play, like me,lols.

Another great tip like Cicatriz says: know the map, now your options and your escape routes.
Valuable information where snipers usually snipe, where stickiebombs are usually deployed, sentrygun placements are less important because I actually hear when a sentry is active since it makes a lot of noise but for the beginning player it is better to learn where the sentryguns usually are.

Also if a certain class is a nemesis of you, like a spy, try playing that class, it gives you insight on where the best places are to uncloack, backstab, or who to disguise as. So you can even kill them better.

Also when you mastered the first and second weapons, being good at melee is also very important, lots of time you will be out of ammo or too close to actually use them, therefor sometimes melee is inevitable, usually it happens to medics or demomen

There's lots of good advice in this thread, and the only thing I would reiterate is to put in a lot of play time if you want to be good.

I'd be willing to bet that if you looked at a lot of the top players on the servers they play 10-20 hours a week. They have put a lot of time and effort in to getting where they are and becoming as skilled as they are.

Many people don't have that kind of time, or that kind of dedication to the game. The bottom line is that you shouldn't get discouraged if you don't have a good kpd ratio because you are playing on some highly competitive servers with people who play a lot. If you keep playing a lot, you'll get there, but there isn't going to be an overnight solution.

Good luck and see you on the servers!:)

Perfect.

Play against/with players with a higher skill level than you. Analyze their strategies and use it for yourself. Also, I had watched several soldier scrim/professional match videos on youtube and other video sites, and it helped me out tremendously.

P.S. I use strategies and experience I've gotten over the years of playing FPS games - it all started with Quake II and a WWII mod for it. Those were the days. =)

I'd say 20-30 hours a week. Atleast I know a large majority of our Dustbowl regulars are around there. I used to be able to have those types of numbers before O-D-M's mom started complaining I didn't take her out much anymore.

Remember, it's debatable that we, eGO, have the most competitive servers around.

Keep a cool head.
Epic tip^

And a competitive mind helps. Play to win and you will get better.

Playing against you yesterday in Blackmesa, you should look around more and be more aware of the players around you. I was playing spy (I'm terrible, but we had none and there were a lot of enemy heavies) and managed to get behind and stab you and your heavy and did it several times. Maybe this means you need to learn medicing, but you should be looking back often when playing medic. If you know what's around you you can be prepared for anything that could be coming, just stick with it and copy players and with time you'll have it.
