SOTW Discussion Thread

Yeah, I think tutorial usage is totally fine. The whole point of SOTW for me is to have a creative outlet, if you want to learn something new, what better time is there? If you like someone's sig, tell them or vote for it. This should be about encouraging each others creativity not nitpicking their methods.

And seriously, consider a banana theme, I really want to see 20 different sigs about bananas. That would be great.

Banana theme = win

I dont see why using tutorials would be a problem, i encourage using tutorials 100%, i use them myself.

EDIT: Also, all ideas for SOTWs must be posted here, any sent to me will be ignored... for now.

I'm wondering if maybe links to reference art should be required though - just so we can see what all they actually did.

I'd have to agree with Phixx, in that we don't want this to turn into a 'Find a really cool pic' and then put your name over top of it contest. Although if you took the photo yourself or enhance it in some way thats a different story.

I kinda agree with Phixx.
The problem you might run into ... is what if you don't have any reference material.. it was all done by photoshop/illustrator/program/hand.

For instance my current sig. The Competition A-Team Sig for our division, was all done by me every little bit of it.. no reference material.

I guess we could just put down, "No reference material" and take them for their word.

The only reason I'm for this.. is because it seems like some people might only put 2 minutes into this and some people put hours and hours into the competition. It's very easy for someone to find a cool pic and just throw their name on it. Without any real work/artistry.

If you don't have any reference and did it all by hand - then yeah, totally say that, so we can give mad props where it's due.

The problem is some people are crpa at drawing in PS/Illustrator/by hand whatever. So Editing images is really all we can do, I dont think it's right to just slap on a name to a resized picture, but hell, it's still a signature.

I think if we maybe post what we did in the entry eg

  • First, I rendered this image: link Here
  • Then I edited it using a various range of lighting techniques
  • Next I edited areas using hue/saturation
  • I got my background image link here
  • I added about 14 layers of brushworks using DLd brushes
  • I edited the various opacities, and layer styles of the brushwork
  • I added an orange photo filter
  • I added a border
  • I added my text

This could also help others improve their sigs by seeing how you made your entry.

Yeah.. but i guess my problem is,
I do so many different things, adding/subtracting / trying / retrying/ scrapping/trimming.... so on and so forth.....
The list would be too long to even come up with.
I guess I could give a basic overview.. but
Detail wise.. way too much normally for me.
No kidding most of my work has 30+ layers :)

Yh that was a lil bit in depth, but you get the basic idea:

My background
Rendered this image
Added brushwork
Edited Lighting
Added photo Filters/hue saturation to colour

I like the idea of just posting your base picture if you have one. I'd just like to see what effects were done just to see what can be done, if that makes sense.

I don't think you need to list what you did though, we should be admiring them for their artistic/creative value, not who did the most what to what. I have no idea who started with what and did what to each sig in contest #2, but I think they are all so good.

If it's a photoshop contest, just let me know, I'll take my leave now.

True, maybe the base pics etc, but from now on Ill be posting a very brief overview of what I did so people may take inspiration from techniques, I may also post links to tuts I have seen that help influence my sig.

I can not stress enough that this is not some 'Whos better?' Contest

It is a contest to promote creativity and artwork among the forum. No one should boast that they are better than someone else, thats wrong and really lame.

Its a signature contest, not an art contest, no one is going to get a million dollars for this.

If they want to create sig with a picture in it fine so be it. SOME people are not as talented as you are with photoshop.

If we can't keep this competition fun and exciting we will pull the plug on it.

Everyone understand ?

PS: I don't care if you put a picture of a donkey in your SIG and calling it YOUR SIG for the week, then so be it.

If you want an "Graphic" art contest, then you need to be more specific, this is a signature contest.

Remember to keep it fun, and not to have all these guidelines.

I may have looked at it more like a "art" contest.

I totally agree ! I'm pretty good with photoshop, but that doesn't mean I'm going to win. I don't care about winning or losing. I participate just because I love to show of my artwork I came up with for the given them. Everybody can win it you just need some imagination :)

I enjoy getting some inspiration for a sig I'd normally never make I mean, nature is something I'd never go for in a million years, but I'm happy with the outcome.
