ok, so has anyone actually experienced somthing bad from this thing? all ive heard is hype and no damage done to anything
Conficker Worm Virus

The worm is connected to a master server which send info everytime you go to listed sites such as paypal.com or your email, credit card website and collects info. So be very careful what you download from websites for the next few weeks. i would recommend purchasing kaspersky as it is rated the best in the world. The antivirus is well worth it.

kaspersky is not rated the best in the world..
bitdefender is the number 1 rated in the world on many a review...
kaspersky comes in between 3rd and 5th.
and all you have to do is go to microsoft and run there tool.
Okay, this is not HYPE, my desktop has to be completely reformatted. And, as Marcxo described, try to avoid ANY online purchases, or bank transactions for a while. Also, about reverse-engineering the virus....Microsoft has already put to together a team who are working on it, called the "Cabal". They say they are more concerned with preventing the illegal activities that are sure to come because of all the "zombie PCs". They have stated that they will probably not be able to locate the original author(s), however, Microsoft did release a $250,000 reward for knowledge of the writers. They suspect the author of the virus might be of Unites States residency because they found the some of the coding was taken directly from a MIT graduate student's research project. Anyway, If your updates are updating without problem, than you shouldn't be worried, especially at this point. However, regardless of whether you have the virus, there will be millions of websites that have been flipped over into "zombie URLs", so make sure NOT to make online purchases if possible. I cannot stress how important that is. Don't misread the virus, it's main purpose is NOT to harm people's computers, but to steal infected/non-infected users personal information.

As of right now the virus is evolving to counter Microsoft's efforts and stopping the virus. It is still dormant and waiting for commands for the master computer. Iam guessing around a few days to even a week time the switch will be flipped and a lot of stuff will be going down. Also from my understanding they believed it originated some where around Eastern Europe. My advice would be too keep your stuff up to date, Don't use internet cafe's computers to do any thing where you have to impute privet information. Go to sites you know and trust..... And use good ol common sense when online.

REformating should be the last option in your mind. after you've exhausted malwareBytes, kaspersky, NOD32, DrWeb (free and incredibly good), and microsoft's safety.live.com scanner. the last one is free and usually helps.
