I just ordered a new laptop from dell and i need to know how this wi-fi works and what i need to use it all i know is that my router can support wi-fi and thats it so help me fill in the rest

all the rest that you need is a wireless router and the driver for your wireless network adapter or a whole wireless adapter and your set :]

The laptop should have a built in adapter, just switch it on from the external switch and it will pick up networks. However, you should configure your router with security. I have WPA protection and a passkey as well as a MAC filter. Basically the MAC filter only allows PCs with the MAC you enter to connect to your network.

Yeah this works but you can also protect your connection by using a WEP setting which requires you to enter a code to access the signal the code is usually located on your router

Ya, i mentioned WAP.

Also, make sure they're the same kind of connection. If I understand correctly, wireless B, G, and N are not compatible, but most things still have stuff for more than 1 (or all of them). Something to look at anyway.

N routers should be backwards compatible with B and G. Just need to turn on the features.
