Are you stats conscious?

Some of the posts in Frisky Dingo?s thread (http://www.edgegamers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76103) inspired me to examine how statistics affect my gameplay, and the gameplay of others in the community.

I sort of think that stats are a double edged sword.

From one angle they are a positive thing: They make the game more competitive, they let you know how or whether you are improving, and they are fun to look at to get a better understanding of your own gaming style (i.e. weapons statistics).

There is also an ugly side. They make people play more conservatively, they hinder people from trying and learning to play classes that they aren?t good at, and they can often promote a play-style that is less team oriented.

I wish I could say that I wasn?t too concerned about my stats, but I know I usually check them daily. That being said, I try not to make that the focus of my game. I?ve found that when I?m too concerned about my stats the game can feel more like work than fun.

I wish that there would be some changes in the statistics to award team play more. For example, I think you should get points for air-blasting and bonking ubers. I?d also like to see stats bonuses when engineers help build another person?s SG etc.

What does everyone else think? Do stats affect the way you play? Do you have more fun playing with stats than without them? Do you wish that they were calculated differently?

Stats definitely make me try harder. When they were off for a while on dustbowl, I just couldn't play seriously, but that was fun. So I think they motivate me to play the best I can, but they make it difficult to goof off which sometimes I want to do. It is fun seeing the crazy points you get from killing the higher ranked players.

When I'm playing, my thought process works like this:

  1. Killing whoever I'm currently mad at
  2. Winning the round
  3. Setting everyone on fire
  4. Stat-building
Generally, when I take care of the first three, the fourth takes care of itself.

i dont care about my stats. it makes it a lot more fun.
i just kill whoever happens to be in front of me.. and behind me.. and above me..

Personally, i was really stat conscious for awhile, but that was only because i was trying to even out my overall kill to death ratio. I was REALLY bad when i first started playing, and it took me forever to have more kills than deaths.

That being said, i don't think it is a bad thing to keep up with your rank and try to improve as a player. It seems to me that a players ranking has more to do with where they play than anything else. I could have a 3-1 ratio on 2fort and lose points because there are far less highly ranked players playing ther.

tbh i find being stat conscious makes this game a lot more fun (not that it isnt fun to begin with)

trying to hunt down people you know will be worth more points, trying not to lose to people you dont recognize for fear that they will take a chunk of points from you...

its like a game within the game

I stopped caring about points a long time ago. Getting a higher K:D ratio is more of my goal...

I will have to agree with PBW on this one if you come in 2FORT with 30 000 points you'll end up having a 10:1 ratio but probably lose 5k worth of points...

The only time i'm stat conscious is when i die. i'll usually type rank and see how many points i lost, but that's about it.

You'll find that if you stop caring about stats, they will go up on their own. Well, at least in my case. Hlstats is not a very good indicator of skill.

Yeah, unfortunately I've been stuck around rank 350-400 for a really long time. However, my goal is to get enough kills soon to be a 5-star General--just about 900 more kills :)

I look at it quite a bit, but I understand that there are a lot of people with waaaay more time on their hands than I want to dedicate to TF2. I love the game and everything, but I play maybe 5-10 hours a week. The people in the top 150 spots or so play at least 30 hours/week, generally. I have a job + life + family ;)

I don't look at it in-game anymore, but I will check it every few days to see if my rank has gone up a bit.

Im not worried about my rank, but my style of game play does reflect on me being aware at all times on stats. I am an agressive spy and at times tend to be reckless, but other times as most spies know you can swiftly turn the tide of battle with the flick of your wrist. Take todays game, I couldnt find anyone I wanted to hunt down so my kill to death ratio as spy was good imo, I think being aware of stats makes me a better player in my opinion...now few play just for fun while others are constantly aware of stats and do anything, and I mean anything to keep their rank...wont mention any names...LOL, but thats not me...I just love playing against really good players...heres the link to my kill to death ratio.

pretty aware of my stats, started caring less now that i'm messing around with the spy.

i think it's a really fun class to play, even tho most of the time my KtD ratio is rarely 1:1 i don't care about that as much now.
just de-cloaking behind a heavy + medic combo is more than worth messing up my stats.

For the most part I try not to pay attention but when I lose almost 1000 points in a day, I start to pay attetion.

I'll say it: I can be a statwhore sometimes

I just want to crack that 1000 rank barrier(which isn't easy in this company), then I won't care anymore
