I was talking to a friend recently and recall I have a lot of footage of my life from my beloved father bless his soul on VHS not DVDs. Since I am a tech. person I realized it was time to do something about it before too long. I find that if I get a capture card i can get the footage i want and burn without spending a lot of money. I have seen those VHS/DVD combos but i think I will only do this once for the VHS tapes. I have seen the Pinnicle Dazzle but wondered if there are others.

My plan is using my dads VHS camera which we still have from the 90s and play the footage from there and stream it to the PC with the Dazzle card.

Any other suggestions?

Sony has a DVD recorder that captures from camera. Also One hour photo has a service where thy put that on a DVD for you, least at Costco.

I've used several Hauppauge TV tuner cards in the past for recording video. They work fairly well. Some are frame grabbers (ie, they output raw video) and others will do encoding straight to MPEG2, which is the DVD standard. The encoder cards are sold as PVR-x50, with the 150 being the basic model you'd probably want for this type of task (the 350 has TV out and one of the other models in the series has dual tuners, which is probably not worth it for you) I think my cards ran me about $50-60 a while back.

I don't know much about the Dazzle, but I do know they come on sale on woot.com every so often if you're looking for a deal. They can get a bit cheaper if you're willing to be patient on woot. I want to say I've seen them for around $40 or so.

well they do have those big box things that convert VHS to Dvd. But they are quite expensive.
