Question about a cooler

A product either has overwhelmingly positive reviews, or nothing but negative ones. Mixed reviews fall towards the latter end of the scale. Basically, just avoid them.

That HSF is horrendously overpriced, especially since the Xigmatek S1823 fox already linked to in your other thread will cool the i7 you're planning on perfectly fine.

If you want to spend a bit more, grab the Noctua NH-U12P 1366 ($80) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608007

Stick with established names. You already know this, after all, you picked a PSU from Corsair, HDDs from WD. Well-known, high-quality, reputable names.

For HSFs, Xigmatek, Noctua, Scythe and Thermalright are the only names you should be looking at.

the Ultra is a peltier cooler though, which is why it is more expensive.... hmm i want to see what others will have to say.

I know the other will cool just fine, but i was looking around, and i found this. and happened to wonder what others have thought

As far as reviews. Most are positive, but i have seen 2 or 3 bad reviews. So it all depends i guess. Im leaning more towards it being a good cooler. Lets see what others have to say

A peltier cool is overkill. Why do you even want one? An i7 920 can be overclocked to 3.6Ghz or more with standard air cooling, so there's really no practical reason to spend so much when the Noctua or Xigmatek will be perfectly capable of cooling the i7.

If i were you, I'd focus more on your other thread, and work out the more critical, vital parts of your build first before focusing on smaller things like an after-market HSF.

not to start an arguement, but im not sure what "critical, vital" parts of my other thread i need to work out. Here, im asking a question about a cooler, because in my mind, that is pretty "critical"

Cooling a processor is actually pretty necessary to a computer, so i figured i would get some opinions on it.

Other peoples opinions, please

You're fretting over a CPU that can be adequately cooled by the stock cooler. Which means it's one of the last things you should be debating over.

In any case, that peltier for over $100 is worthless when a $40 HSF can do the same job. If you pay for something that's 2.5 more expensive, you expect it to be 2.5 times as good. That peltier cooler isn't. Therefore, it's not worth buying. Simple. How hard was that to decide?

What monumental moron would pay $150 for a HSF that doesn't even offer $150 worth of performance? That peltier is good, decent, adequate, whatever you want to call it according to reviews:

Is it worth spending $150 on this thing when a $80 or even $40 HSF can do the job just as well? The answer is no. Just because you have a large budget doesn't mean buy the most expensive parts available. Especially if there are similar performing coolers for half or even a quarter of the price.

Just because you have a large budget doesn't mean buy the most expensive parts available.

So you're basically telling him since he has money he can't just go and spend it on anything he wants? Money doesn't come with freewill attached?

From your posts in this thread and many others I can tell that you are a bit of a budget buyer, which isn't a bad thing, but that doesn't mean everyone else is. You can give suggestions but you don't have to shove it down people's throat.
It sounds more like your giving demands rather than friendly suggestions.

His money, he can do whatever he wants. Of course, if he also wants to waste $60 or so, there's another option. Take a lighter, burn the notes. Great waste of money, which is exactly what he'll be doing by going with that peltier cooler.

Friendly suggestions don't work when people are about to make stupid decisions. So i'll use the alternative, brow-beat them or shove the right choices down their throat. Too bad more often than not, i'm also right in the decision.

you know what im going to do. Im going to get the Untra Chilltec cooler. and then im going to make a post about how great it is. And that it was money well spent. Its my decision, and if im stupid for it, so be it

Please lock thread, im not getting any useful advice

It doesn't cool the area around the processor socket, which is a pretty big drawback even if you have decent airflow in your case. It's also pretty noisy which may or may not be an annoyance for you. My verdict is that unless your a pretty hardcore overclocker you're much much better served by something in the $50 price range.

finally, useful information instead of just telling me im wasting money

thanks Geheimwaffe. In my other topic, im getting the EVGA Classified, so i plan on doing some serious overclocking. I need something like a peltier cooler to be able to cool the CPU. I could go with a water cooling system, but that would be down the road so im looking for something i could use that would be close to a water cooling system besides actually going water cooling. Using multiple benchmarks from multiple sites, i saw this was one of the closest things. Because of that, i decided i could go with this, see what temps were like and possibly keep it and not have to go with a WC loop. Unless it sucks, then i learn, and then i go water cooling. Sometimes its just about learning from mistakes and trying things out for yourself

anyways, ill keep that in mind when coming to the stage of ordering a cooler

Sounds like this will be an interesting cooler for you then. Let me know how well it works for you. I'm interested to find out if it performs on par with a decent water-cooling setup too.

yeah, it'll actually be a while till i get it though... :(

i do have jobs, but work has been a little bit slow lately so i havent been getting as many hours as i want. Hopefully it will pick up after school gets out in 2 weeks though

but yeah, im interested to see how it works first hand too. I figure i can test that out, and see how it goes. :D

Hey, sorry if I stepped into this a little too late, but that cooler is way too expensive. If you want a great air cooler, get the ThermalRight Ultra 120. My friend had a i7 920 running stable at 4ghz with that cooler. I'll try to get a screenie if i can.

It comes in like 5 models, but these are the best:
Ultra 120 : http://www.frozencpu.com/products/5..._LGA_775_LGA_1366_Xeon_AM2.html?tl=g40c14s757

Black Ultra 120 : http://www.frozencpu.com/products/7..._LGA_775_LGA_1366_AM2_Xeon.html?tl=g40c14s757

True Copper (100% copper, it will rip your cpu socket straight off your motherboard) : http://www.frozencpu.com/products/8..._LGA_775_LGA_1366_AM2_Xeon.html?tl=g40c14s757

nah its not too late.

Do you guys truly know why its so expensive?

Its basically a phase change cooler because of the peltier. As the CPU goes under more load, electricity flows through the peltier, which causes it to become cool. As that happens it cools the plate directly touching the motherboard, and cooling it to below ambient air temperature. That is why it is more expensive. Its not just HSF, its a Thermo-Electric cooler.
