Go to your task manager, go to the processes tab, and see if Steam.exe is running (sort by name to help you find it), if it is, rightclick and hit End Process. It'll ask if you're sure, just say yes.

Then try to start Steam again.

I just underwent this same problem this morning and low and behold a "ghost Steam" was running in my processes list, so maybe it'll be your solution ;).

try deleting the clientregistry.blob file in the steam folder, then try starting it.

Try
A) start a game that requires steam directly, see if that'll start it
B) Delete steamclient.dll from the steam folder
C) Restart your computer and try one last time
D) ... reinstall Steam is all I've got left >,>
(I believe you can make it leave your games behind so you won't have to redownload all of them)

The new steam update started to dl when i logged on, then steam wont oppen.( just more info) and none of those worked.. havnt reinstalled yet.

See if any of these processes show up in your process list.
Steam.exe
GameOverlay.exe
hl2.exe (or any other steam game)

After deleting clientregistry.blob and steamclient.dll Steam should be forced to start an update (the crappy old green Steam looking window with a yellow progress bar)

It may just be in the background downloading the update and not showing up b/c its hidden behind something, in otherwords its possible you could just restart your comptuer, try to start Steam, and give it enough time to complete an update... its not likely but it could happen.

Reinstall is the simplist answer
Ooooor you can do a systems restore ^_^
If reinstalling doesn't work then use systems restore
Works wonders for software!

Woops, didn't read that there was a second page...

But if theres a problem, usually deleting everything in your Steam folder (except Steam.exe and the Steamapps folder) will fix it.
