Jarate...What now?

Hm, lets see how this affects gameplay. I honestly don't see everyone running around with jars of pee in the beginning, also I'm sure they've made it kind of hard to use. So it may not be so much of a nightmare in game, but is still a stupid concept.(it works but why pee?)

Because it fits with the snipers character. He had jars of pee long before he ever had them as weapons.

I find this to be extremely useful. I'll more than happily replace anything other than my rifle for this weapon. It has several uses and will really make the sniper more viable in other instances than sitting far back and shooting. Also getting lit on a fire as a sniper is a serious problem, but now with 1 fellow sniper around you won't have to worry as much.

I fail to see how Jarate is useful to a sniper.

Valve hasn't indicated how many you get, perhaps only one, and moreover, they haven't stated if it does any damage upon impact (or if it just increases subsequent damage taken by 35%).

In any case, this means that, as a sniper, I need to run up to an enemy (within throwing distance) splash this on them, and then what? Bow them from 5 feet away when there are probably a lot of other enemies around shooting around me? Think about it guys, the Sniper has received no new close-range weapons in this update. No SMG replacement with offensive capabilities, no kukri replacement with offensive capabilities.

Valve attempted to make the Sniper more "close combat", yet failed to provide it any close combat weapons aside from, arguably, the bow. Basically, they've made us a defensive/support class in their attempt to make us more offensive.

Seriously, this is immensely disappointing to me.

what a useless unlock. Valve is becoming extremely lazy with these updates.

Expand on that or I shall refuse to acknowledge that as an intelligent comment. If you're going to complain at least make your points clear.

I personally think this item is going to be hilarious and lots of fun. I don't really care if it's some uber piece of equipment, because in all actuality it shouldn't be. It should somehow change his role while not being any better or worse than the replacement.

I think Valve has a sense of humor while keeping the game different from every other boring FPS out there.

Here's a great scenario for you to illustrate the usefulness of the Jarate.

2fort, ramparts, a jar of your morning coffe... 3 hours later.

Group of enemies running across the bridge. Toss jar onto enemies. They run into the entry...

Sentry gun + Engie = dead group of baddies. Profit.

It looks like Valve has gone an awful lot out of the way to give the sniper some anti-spy stuff which is near worthless for anything else. Heavy is a big target of the spy and sniper and they didn't get squat. IMO, Valve has really dropped the ball on this.

I keep hearing that... how can you say that when you can get 35% more damage on them from everyone in the whole team... Its not only a damage buff for you but everyone shooting him. That to me is well worth the exchange of weapons.

Ok, I should be clearer.

There is a huge difference between Jarate merely increasing subsequent damage received, or if it both increases said damage and inflicts a certain degree of damage upon impact. Moreover, is there a followup attack, say, for example, using the empty jar to bludgeon the enemy? With the Sandman, ya the ball itself was a status effect, but you could still use the bat to inflict damage.

If Jarate is only the status effect (i.e. the damage modifier), then it is effectively the Sandman ball without the bat. That means that, for this update, the Sniper has received two non-offensive weapons: you can't attack with the shield, obviously, and the jar itself only has the ability to increase damage taken. That basically leaves the sniper with only one weapon that can damage enemies in the offensive sense.

That leaves the Sniper wanting. That leaves me disappointed.

In my point of view, Jar-ate is gonna be helpful, and a lot, 'cause it influences the sniper to get closer with his team. Besides this is the perfect addition to the huntsman since it influences you to get closer to your pals and closer to the enemy, and since your closer, the jar-ate is gonna make you a friendlier class because you are gonna help put fire off friends and making you and unpractical but effective spy-checker. Since its gonna be long ranged it may help if and incoming enemy is coming and its its so close your sniper cant aim well, you could use the jar-ate

The down side is: that its gonna be very hard to use and rather useless if you aren't using the huntsman. An other thing is that it is obviously gonna shoot in and angle, and its gonna become the thing Valve wanted to avoid during the creation of the game, you guessed it, HAND GRENADES!!! Witch is worse than ANY Sandman and even worse than a boomerang. And seeing what they did to the Scout's bat, the jar-ate will reload over a large period of time thus making it more useless if your friend is in need of fire-away substances in a Arena map or in other occasions like in a CP map with little health packs and no water and your team has no medic.

Why would a sniper, whose sole purpose is to provide cover fire, usually from behind, want to get "closer with his team"? Generally, when I snipe on Warpath, from the ridge for example, I want no one else there, because it not only blocks my shots but it calls attention to my location. If that occurs, I'm not effectively doing my job as a sniper.

Besides this is the perfect addition to the huntsman since it influences you to get closer to your pals and closer to the enemy, and since your closer, the jar-ate is gonna make you a friendlier class because you are gonna help put fire off friends and making you and unpractical but effective spy-checker.

I appreciate your sentiment...but why would I need, or care, to be a "friendlier class"? What does that even entail anyways? Snipers help there team by 1. shooting people, 2. Holding choke points, and 3. shooting more people. Snipers are supposed to be solo generally, providing cover from a distance.

Moreover, people who play with me know that I am an almost paranoid spy-checker. After playing sniper for nearly 400 hours, I know to expect spies. If I do see a spy, I pull out the kukri and kill them (hopefully). What I don't do is pull out a jar of piss, splash it on them, deactivate their disguise, and then hit them. What's the point of that? If I get close enough to splash jarate on them, why the hell wouldn't I just hit them? Moreover, its not like I'm limited with my kukri swings, so I can just hit anyone that I expect might be a spy. With Jarate, I have to potentially waste a "weapon" with a very long cool-down on someone who may or may not be a spy. At the very least, its inefficient and impractical, at the most, its just plain stupid.

Since its gonna be long ranged it may help if and incoming enemy is coming and its its so close your sniper cant aim well, you could use the jar-ate

Or I could use my SMG, or the weapon that could've replaced the SMG if Valve had designed such a weapon. And with my SMG, at least I have a greater chance of hitting the enemy, and actually damaging them myself.

Yep.

An other thing is that it is obviously gonna shoot in and angle, and its gonna become the thing Valve wanted to avoid during the creation of the game, you guessed it, HAND GRENADES!!! Witch is worse than ANY Sandman and even worse than a boomerang.

Double Yep.

And since my predictions are correct, the jar-ate will reload over a large period of time thus making it more useless if your friend is in need of fire-away substances in a Arena map or in other occasions like in a CP map with little health packs and no water and your team has no medic.

Triple Yep.

The image you bring to mind is of a lone sniper blindly rushing to the front lines to hurl jars of urine that do no actual damage on impact at his enemies and then die a horrible horrible death. The correct image is of a sniper with team mates, and likely one who is using ambush tactics (grate on 2fort anyone? The battlements as enemies rush by beneath him?).

The problem is that you're taking one aspect out of the whole being of the sniper and then trying to make the idea stand on its own. I have news for you: it won't. No unlock will. No weapon will. I don't know if anyone's realized this but the reason TF2 works is that all the weapons suck. They are terrible and impractical, and the only reason that works so well in this game is that the enemy's in the same boat as you. If you try to take any single weapon in the game and see how good it is, you will be disappointed. The rocket launcher fires missiles that are too slow; the Pyro's flamethrower does not have enough range; the medic's needlegun doesn't do enough damage; the minigun cannot move fast enough; Sentry Guns have too slow a response time. There's tons of examples.

The fact is that in order to succeed in TF2 you need to adopt strategies in order to compensate for your shortcomings. Now what you've done is proposed a scenario; come up with a strategy, and then have proven that your strategy does not work with Jarate. What you've done wrong is then go on to say that the weapon is not working correctly and needs to be fixed or altered.

This is akin to a spy trying a full frontal attack on the enemy base, dieing, and then complaining that the spy class needs more health. When the strategy doesn't work it does not mean that the weapon needs to be fixed, it means that the strategy needs to be altered. Jarate is not a combat weapon, but it does fulfill Valve's promise.

I can see your argument on the sniper close combat, but you seem to directly assume that being closer to the enemy implies being on offense, and, indeed, even assume that it was combat that Valve meant when they said that they wanted to move the sniper closer to his enemies.

They said they wanted the sniper to get closer to his enemies, as usually frustration amounts when players are killed without never having the chance to prevent their deaths. This does not mean that the sniper needs to become a Pyro, or a soldier, or any other quite obviously mid to close quarters combat classes.

Now look at this: You still need to be close to use Jarate; it's possible to avoid getting wet from Jarate as the Sniper is in your face and is quite killable, and not on the other end of the map.

Valve is meeting its goals, you just can't see it yet. They wanted to get the Sniper closer, but that doesn't necessarily translate to offensive. Jarate is a support weapon but it's still one that requires close proximity to the target, and that's exactly what Valve wanted.

__________EDIT__________

Why would a sniper, whose sole purpose is to provide cover fire, usually from behind, want to get "closer with his team"?

Valve already addressed this: cause it's freaking infuriating to the victims of the sniper; they are killed and never had a chance to do anything different to prevent their death. In normal combat when you lose you can see the mistakes you made, the correct actions the enemy took, and learn how to do things differently to play better next time.

This doesn't happen with Snipers. Most times you are given little or no warning they are there, and even with advanced warning often die simply because you were not fast enough. How is a heavy supposed to be better prepared to take down a sniper on the other side of the map? He can't. He can only rush out and hope for the best. The result is that snipers don't have opponents or enemies; they have victims, which is not fun for other classes.

You're missing the point. You ask why do this, when these new weapons are the reason to do that. Valve is not giving you the ability to be a friendlier class; they are, first and foremost, giving you the incentive to be one. Then, and only then, they are giving you the capability to be so.

With Jarate, I have to potentially waste a "weapon" with a very long cool-down on someone who may or may not be a spy. At the very least, its inefficient and impractical, at the most, its just plain stupid.

But then, if it has an AOE effect (which it very might well seeing as how it has a long cool down time and such a weapon is not efficient when you have to debuff players one at a time), then you need only splash the nearest group of players to find the spy. Not only that, but you don't consider the fact that many spies run away when found. If you splash them, then they lose the ability to run away and redisguise; they are forced to stay cloaked or to run around your base undisguised, which will lead to them being quickly found.

Or I could use my SMG, or the weapon that could've replaced the SMG if Valve had designed such a weapon. And with my SMG, at least I have a greater chance of hitting the enemy, and actually damaging them myself.

How odd. You're complaining that there is no SMG unlock weapon to help you deal with spies when the smg unlock prevents back stabs. All your examples seem to have you fighting one on one with a spy, which doesn't always happen. Quite often spies are successful in backstabbing snipers, so why exactly are you complaining about a weapon that is specifically tailored to help you deal with Spies?

I see a point here. Then I think, with the snipers true strategy (even with a bow at midrange) he's supposed to be behind friendly lines and teammates protecting him. Therefore he has one, maybe two, natural opponents. The spy is the main one. What other class can make it all the way through a group of sentries without revealing himself and come in killing range of the sniper?. The second possible one is the scout, who can make it through enemy lines unharmed but is very much noticed by that point.

I'm disregarding things like a soldier or demo jumping into location of teh sniper, because they should either be dead from teammates by then or easily dispatched with the correct weapon as their health is low.

It's less close range assault capabilities as it is medium range support abilities Ronin. A sniper can now shine as a support class following behind the main push with his new unlock weapons. The bow's quicker charge time means taking out priority targets can happen quickly, and you don't have to have xosniper's frankly frightening quickshot skils.

And the thing is, even if you believe the bow is the only weapon to really goad a sniper to get closer, it is also the ONLY one that matters. A sniper really shouldn't be relying on his secondary or melee weapons. You play sniper because you want to SNIPE people. Or stick them to walls as the case may be. The SMG and kukri really only originally served as emergency choices for when people get close, while the Sniper's real tool was his rifle. Replace it with a Huntsman, and you're getting closer to the fighting. No bones about it.

Jarate sounds interesting. I imagine the arc is about the range of a demoman's sticky, uncharged. It certainly cements the alternate sniper's role as a medium range support class. As you follow behind the main push, any class shows up that NEEDS to die? Chuck a jar at them. Follow up with a 1 second fully charged bodyshot to kill any class except overhealed demos, soldiers, and heavies.

Of course, I can't really justify it over just SHOOTING them, but now you get to throw jars of piss, so I think this is the better option.

OR, lets say a spy is lining up for a backstab chain on the assault group you are following behind. You are lucky enough not to get shivved (thanks, possibly, to you're handy dandy razorback). Now you can nail the spy with a jarate, meaning he can't run away and wait for another chance to strike!

Finally, lets say a pyro blitzes the assault group that you are following (yes I'm trying to make a point no it's not very subtle shut up). The medic got pretty badly hurt, and may burn to death. Well, now there's a solution! Think of how proud you would be if you personally saved a medic with 90% uber from dying!

Unless its me. To you snipers that happen to have a bottle of jarate handy when I'm on fire, no thank you, I'd rather burn to death. I'm imagining some pretty funny scenes where I'm on fire and running from a sniper on my team with a bottle of piss.

Edit: a few good points while I was posting. Lets add some more Wall of Text (tm)!

You know, I forgot that the jar of urine had a splash effect (lolpun). Perfect! Now the medium range support sniper can not only take out specific high priority targets, he can also help his teammates take on an enemy group by having them a bunch of them simply DIE faster.

Furthermore, I don't see why everyone insists there is a cooldown time on this thing. The more I think about it, the more certain I am that it DOESN'T have a cooldown. Think about it. With this weapon, the sniper basically gives up his melee fighting capability. If he runs out of ammo, that's it, he's reduced to 0 to negligible damage jarate. If anyone catches him close range and alone, he's basically a dead man, making it imperative he finds some burly men to hang around with. "But isn't it overpowered if he can just keep chucking them?" Is it? Sandman has its recharge time because it is an incredibly powerful tool versus 1 or 2 people. But people nailed by multiple jars of piss aren't going to become MORE covered in piss (Well, I hope not anyway). Jarate becomes pretty darn appealing if you think of it this way, as long as you don't mind people beating you up horribly if they ever catch you alone in close quarters.

Plays2, It doesn't sound like you've ever played the original Team Fortress or Team Fortress Classic. I got into TFC quite a bit in my day, but yes, grenade spam and usage was one of its major turn-offs for me. Let me draw you a picture.

Imagine the 32 person 24/7 dustbowl server full of people. Now imagine EVERYONE is playing demoman, except they also can have the weapon of any other class except the medic. You can't NOT play demoman, there's literally no other choice. Now imagine there's only 1 exit from spawn. The problem with hand grenades wasn't the arc or the splash damage, it was that EVERYONE got them. There's more specific mechanics that made the game a grenade spamfest to rival CoD4, but that's probably to involved for this steadily growing Wall of Doom/Text (tm).

Enough filibuster. I'll end up hitting the character limit.

Also, I like what Dan said above and it echoes something I said earlier. TF2 is not your run of the mill FPS clone. You will not have a single weapon that can dominate entire teams. Things work out through *GASP* teamwork. And updates like these make teh game more itneresting and fun instead of a bullet grind fest.

Ugh, im tired of all these people already calling it useless. 1. They havent been able to use it and 2. Its supposed to be used with the bow and makes the sniper a lot more supportive instead of "taking out high priority targets"
