The dead ringer spy watch.

I sucked being a spy until i got this watch, it fits my playstyle nicely.

Especialy useful fpr PL maps where I can use it, run around behind the front lines while i have a disguise loading in then quickly backstab through . They never see it coming. Although afterwards it is hard to escape so i generaly just do kamikaze runs unless i can get far enough behind to hide and let it recharge.

Over my pass few days with the DR, it is extremely useful. I use it as an invuln tool. When fighting anything but pyros and heavies, I'll shoot em and if i feel their next move coming ill bring it out take 5-20 dmg and go back to shooting. Insta decloaks will make it so you can get the watch right back out. If i decide it is too risky to keep fighting i run away. I have feigned death 6 times in one life on a single sniper before killing the sniper. It easily saved my life.

Also pushing the kart on the final stage is great. Have it out get shot keep going. With insta decloaking the sniper can't put out even damage to bring you down since the kart heals you.

This is my favorite new weapon so far. I have found so many sneaky ways to use it, although my favorite has got to be disguising as your own team.

With the last update i see it as worthless now

The Dead Ringer now fully drains the cloak meter, even if the Spy leaves cloak early

Can't use insta decloaks for living :\ I'm not happy at all. This is ridiculous that was the main value ....

I'm pretty sure the main value was for use as an escape and misleading tool. Not a way for spies to have an effective 1250 health (according to tf2wiki).

:O why not!! that's what i used it for!

Cna't do it wrong any more they nerfed it to the devil who would prefer to use the C&D b/c spies are no longer tanks (only Molotovs would bring em down)

They were never supposed to be tanks. They were supposed to be stealthy. There is no element of stealth in a full frontal attack.

/sarcasm
Hmm spy comes from the letter s which is the last letter in tanks the p comes from power and the y is y go stealth S.P.Y obviously you are mistaken :( :facewall::facewall::facewall:

I know I've lost FYI

OSVG, I honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. In a text only medium, you really do need to make such indications.

Hmm, ever since I got the Cloack and Dagger, the Dead Ringer lost a lot of its appeal.

Okay, so you can use it make everyone believe you died. But its not perfect. People are getting smart about the dead ringer now, and just because they killed a spy doesn't mean they're going to let their guard down. When you decloak (and they're going to know that you decloaked, thank you loud noises) The enemy knows they have a 16 second window to kill you where you have absolutely NO chance of making it out alive.

It looks like Dead Ringer is moving back towards being an interference/response spy playstyle. Enemies on the front lines can't check that the spy they killed is really dead, and now you have a place to run to to get your Dead Ringer recharged, namely, your own base.

There are two styles of playing spy.

  1. Be stealthy and never be seen.
  2. Be seen, but disguised well enough to blend in.

The new watches are extensions of these two play styles. For those who rely on disguises and only used stealth when they were discovered, the Dead Ringer is their get-out-of-dead-free card.

For those who rely on stealth and for whom disguises are only for momentary distractions, they'll gravitate towards the Cloak and Dagger.

And those who use a mixture of styles, they'll stick with the default watch.

There are times for both styles of play, some maps require you to blend in and kill, others where you have to sneak around and kill. Neither watch is better than the other unless it supports your preferred style of play.

In the future, the best spies will be able to use all the watches and mix up the styles to keep the enemy off-guard. Many times I switched from Dead Ringer to Cloak and Dagger and back again to kill people who were looking for one or the other. Nothing says you have to die to switch weapons.

A couple of times I was accused of OMGHAX! after switching off from one to the other. They thought I was using both at once. Nothing is more fun than being good enough for people to think you cheat. :)

I agree totally...I just got the cloak and dagger and im hooked on it. To more experienced players the dead ringer does nothing...I mean most hold the watch out and dont attack so 1 bullet looks like you killed them...yeh right. I keep spraying everywhere and find them just as easy, plus the noise it makes when you uncloak is redonkulous. The cloak and dagger seems to have no drawback since you can crouch walk to extend the life of the watch as well as just stand still on some boxes and replenish the cloak. I love the cloak and dagger.

Personally, I think the Cloak and Dagger Spy Watch is vastly superior than the other two watches if you can be patient.
As most people already now the Cloak and Dagger's effect is dependent on the velocity of the player using it.
Falling consumes the cloak fastest, while running consumes it a little slower, and crouch-walking consumes the battery at the slowest rate.
The cloak recharges fifty percent faster if you stand still while cloaked, as opposed to decloaking.

  • Cloak duration while running: ~ 8 seconds
  • Cloak duration while crouch walking: ~ 60 seconds
  • Cloak recharge time while cloaked: ~ 30 seconds
  • Cloak recharge time while uncloaked: ~ 20 seconds
It truly is a (patient) hunter's weapon. ;)
