Is Comcast Sabotaging my Connection?

For awhile now I'll be playing for an hour or more and I'll lose connection. Dead.

Usually I have to reset the modem and wait for the connection to come back.

Usually this is more than a minor inconvenience because it likes to happen after I've waited like 2 hours to get the sniper rile and then my connection goes dead.

Now, the past few days my ping has been horrible. I can hardly play at times.
I've ran net_graph 3 and I'm showing anywhere from 50 to 90 frames per second, the choke - loss seems to be 0 most of the time. Usually my ping is maybe 50, but lately it's been 100, 200 . . . .

I was wondering if Comcast is playing games with me since I'm streaming while playing. I'm fairly convinced it's not my computer at this point.

I would like to give them a call but I was wondering if there were some things I could check on my own to eliminate some possibilities or gather some evidence before I call Comcast to complain.

I'm thinking DSL is probably faster and more reliable at this point. Getting frustrated.

Comcast works great for me. Have you ever considered that the problem may remain in your router? About every week, I have to restart it, Or it gets really laggy and slow. Check your router first. If the problem still persists, then call them.

In some areas, Comcast can be horrible.

The same thing happened to me bro, get a new modem/router and you're set. I get no more resets. I have comcast

If you have torrented anything, chances are Comcast is throttling you. There have been several cases where they did (which is against the law) and they were pretty much given a slap on the wrist and told to stop, but many reports say they haven't.

I've heard of that but other than streaming youtube videos and playing DOD/TF2 no torrenting or anything of that sort has been going on.

I'll lose connection and have to reset the modem about once every couple hours but now it's just slow.

Maybe I should look into swapping out modems with them. It was an old phone/web combo router but we haven't had phone from them in like 2 years.

The same thing used to happen to me. You need to enter the modem config page which should be at 192.168.100.1 and go to into configuration. Then press restore factory defaults. That worked for me. O and this is if you have the Motorola one.

Don't do this if you don't have the key. I did this once and had to call my ISP to get it back on lol

i've worked for a few cable/internet companies in the past...and most of them will screw around with you if you owe them money.....seriously

I had a problem similar to this, and when the cable company came to check, it ended up being the underground cable to my house had deteriorated, they replaced it, and I haven't had a problem since.

If You've changed out modems and made sure its not on your part I'd definitely be calling em up complaining, when I don't get full internet speed I'm not happy

off-topic: because the best internet speed I can get is 400 KB/S down, If I don't get full speed then I can't do anything

I called comcast today. I could have random dialed any phone number and probably gotten better advice than I did from the rep, but basically I just need to go to comcast and pick one up. I can't of course drop off the old one, which would be too logical, I have to make an appt. so someone can come by my house and retrieve it.

Whatever.

I have my computer connected through a router, so I reset the modem today and hooked it directly to the computer. Didn't change a thing, ping is still atrocious.

I'm picking up the replacement tomorrow.

lol i didnt have a key. I just said eh whats the worst thing that happens, it keeps not working. Did it, and it has worked ever since.

There could be numorous things in the pile that could cause these problems. One thing you must remember is cable internet is shared bandwidth. If possible NEVER rent a cable modem from the cable company. Buy your own so you have the ability to tinker with it if you so please. Not all ISP's will allow your own. Comcast here in NM does allow you to have your own. Use the same company for your modem and router if possible because of compatibility. If you have a wireless router, LOCK IT DOWN. People who just plug in and go will get network buddy's using your network most of the time. Make sure your computer is virus and spyware free. Turn off all auto updating software you can think of and update the programs yourself every week or every other week. If you are not computer savy then leave the auto updates on.

Sometimes you just get bad DNS connections. As in your ISP's main DNS server is restarted or updated for some reason. Read up on the command "ipconfig". (/all,/release,/renew,/flushdns,/registerdns) Update your router's firmware

Connections could be crappy due to a bad cables. Do not bend any of your cables at 90 or greater.(Cat 5e/Cat 6 and Coax)

I was just as Comcast today to get a replacement remote for TV. The rented cable box here is 3 bucks and you can buy one of theirs for 49 bucks. I would go buy a quality name brand modem. (D-Link or Linksys)

Thanks, that is good advice.

I went and got a motorolla modem from comcrap, I mean comcast. Hooked it up it doesn't work. Used the new cable and hooked it right to the computer. Called tech support. They say I have a weak signal. Hooked the old modem back up and it works, kinda. They are sending a tech out today.

off topic, one time with cingular/at&t. i had gotten a 3meg line and it seemed to be going slow so i went and tested teh speed and it was goin as if it was 1.5 (a little under 1.5 since i have some loss since i'm not right next to the box). anyway so i called the company up and told them my service is going slow. so the person i was talking to kept trying to have me do pointless junk on my end which i knew it wasn't on my end. finally he said he would put in a ticket for someone to call me and make an appointment. the person calls to setup an appointment and they are going through making the appointment and they look at my account and she says hold on a moment. she comes back about 5 minutes later and says to test my connection again. so i do and low and behold it's going a little under 3megs. i say it's fine now and she tells me that they had me down as 1.5 megs. i say well thank you for fixing it. end of rant
