here's the lowdown:
I haven't mapped in hammer in a while but in a flurry of activity I created a player controlled flak cannon (for l4d but it can be ported to any source engine game). Since I'm mot currently working on any maps I thought I would put it out there for anyone to use in their map so long as they give me credit :-). I would also be willing to modify and tweak the cannon or models for those that arn't familiar enough with hammer to do it themselves. I'm also open for requests if you want me to make something really cool for your maps like vehicles (made entirely in hammer), jet packs, turrets, ect
as I have much experience in the matter.

*until I can upload the map I will post a few quick images and eventually videos demonstrating it.

*The current version of the flak cannon doesn't fire correctly or have a muzzle flash but in my next revision I will fix it. Currently pushing the red button at the pedestal triggers it.

*For those interested I will also post shortly a graphical flow graph (is that redundant?) of how the cannon functions so that new mappers can understand how it was done.

full bright + Ambient occlusion = glitchy (I think I will repost this image with full bright off)

A screen shot from hammer, cant really read the names of entities after i re sized it but oh well.

No zombie spawns in this one so I guess I'll just have to kill my fellow survivors.

yes currently the projectile is a box but i will change this in the next revision as well. The pink checkerboard is from a missing texture and is the reason it has no working muzzle flash at the moment.

cannon was based loosely on this naval cannon

I'd love one of these for future map. Just make sure all the materials are correct.

sorry for the lack of updates but I've been busy with school, does anyone know a free video editing program i can use to scale down my fraps videos of the cannon in action ?

since the only dependencies it has to l4d are the texture yes it could easily be ported over just havn't done much work on it as I have been busy with life lol right now the cannon will turn and stop at appropriate times (so it doesn't clip into its own model when rotating) but I was having trouble getting it to shoot correctly I've tried

A) making it shoot a physbox projectile which looks cool but is very taxing on the source engine plus the projectile can only move so fast with this method.

B)making a move linear that comes out of the barrel; I need to make it so that when it shoots it is no longer attached to the gun so that the bullet wouldn't move with the turret after it was fired but then have it reattach to the barrel at the correct angle after being fired so that it can be fired again

C)making a trigger hurt in a line out of the barrel that just does damage to everything and one in a line (this method doesn't account for terrain or things that might block the projectile but is increadibly easy to do)

What do you guys think? I can release it in its current form (just moving turret with no ability to shoot and let you guys mess around with it) or I can work on it some more and hopefully get it shooting correctly.

GET IT SHOOTING CORRECTLY PL0X! Although, on the other hand, you could also just release it right now and let us see what its like?

One question: What is Rhinocerous? Where do you download/buy it?

EDIT: Nevermind. Found it. Looks pretty cheap for the Educational version.

I'll make it a point to get it shooting correctly by tonight then I'll clean it up and let it loose in the form of a vmf file.

Sorry something important came up and wasn't able to finish it so have some nice pretty renders for the time being.

nice! I cant wait for you to upload it. I really want to know how to make it and it will definatly help my mapping skills. Im only a novice :D

Possibly one of the coolest things I've seen done in hammer.

I thought the hammer version was cooler, but you need the XSI mod tool to convert the model.
