So I booted up my computer this morning like any other morning. I walked away for a couple minutes, and came back to find my computer still booting. It normally takes 2.5 minutes, it took 5 minutes this morning. I figured there must be something wrong with the hard drive. :cursing:
Once I got into windows, I opend up crystaldiskinfo and was presented with this about my primary hard drive.
diskc.jpg

My computer is running incrediably slow right now, :chair:, and I fear it is failing.
:facewall: Can anyone out there tell me if the hard drive is failing?
(I think this trouble actually started last night when I was at late night fight with tf2. my fps was all over the place, and I couldn't figure it out.)

I bought this hard drive from newegg on 10/28/2008.
My specs:
AMD phenom II x4 940 3.0 ghz
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
LG Black LG Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16X DVD?R DVD Burner
Cooler master haf 932
tuniq tower 120
EVGA 8800 gts 512mb
Zalman 850w power supply
MSI K9A2 Platinum AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX motherboard
SAMSUNG Spinpoint 750GB 7200 RPM (failing hdd)
500gb hard drive (forgot brand)
80gb hard drive (forgot brand)
Windows Vista x64 Business

Right now I am frantically backing up important stuff on to my 500gb hdd. Please tell me if I have to worry more.

Have you run defrag lately? Also Samsung is not real well known for their hard drives. Did you check on their warranty info? Since they dont make alot of hard drives, my guess is that you got a hard drive w/ a 1 year warranty. Try defragging it. If that doesnt work, then hit up Samsung & report the issue to them, esp since its still under warranty. Other than that, I cant really think of why it would be acting up.

No, no clicking noises. It hasn't done that yet.
I'm still backing up stuff, I will run a defrag once I'm done and contact samsung.
edit:
I just looked up warranty, 3 years limited for parts and labor. Hopefully this will be ok for me.

Well, I finished backing up stuff and I've been running defrag since about 12. Still isn't done yet. I've also sent an email to samsung, but i'm thinking I won't get a reply until monday. So until I fix this, I will have to be out of the game industry. Oh well. :P

Defrag is done. didn't solve the problem. I decided to find a program that runs smart self tests, instead of just viewing smart info.
Drivesitter pro came back with this:
disk2.jpg

So my hard drive is failing, even though it says it is "ok":P

WRONG! :chair: <-- At least about the defrag'ing part.

If you think your disk is going to fail defragging is one of the worst things to do. Defragmenting is supposed to speed up a WORKING hard drive by organizing the file system into a more efficient manner. The increased drive activity is wasted and should be put towards backing up your data.

Have you tried running this command in the command line as a administrator?
Code:
chkdsk /r

defragging worked, it just took 14 hours.

I tried chkdsk /r, it wants to schedule it for the next time i restart. So I will post results in a minute.

It took a while but chkdsk just got done. here are the results:

Also, when I booted back up, drivesitter told me that my current pending sector count went up from 22 to 33. :chair:

also, sorry about all the double posts.

Heard Back from samsung. They will exchange it for a new hard drive. I may be out of gaming for a bit.
Also on a side note, the "current pending sector count" has increased at least 1 count per hour now. Something is definitely wrong.

I sent in hard drive last friday. It hasn't hit samsung yet, eta is thursday.

In the meanwhile, I managed to get my 80 gb hard drive cleaned and I'm using it with windows 7 until I get my 750gb back. So I can still game!

Sorry about the quadruple post,

I got my hard drive back, or rather, A hard drive back. No doubt it is just a refurbished one. Same model and all. I haven't tested it yet, but I don't think there will be any problems.
