This used to only happen while playing Left 4 Dead, but now it happens randomly.

The computer will hard-lock, with the only fix being a reboot. Sometimes, on reboot I get the message "system has recovered from critical error", send the log to Microsoft, and the result is almost always the same.

a "thread stuck in device" or "stop error" related to the graphics card.

Is there a way to fix this? Relevant info:

Do you have any more information on the "critical error" like an error code, or crash log you could provide us?

Tried reinstalling the graphics drivers (Using a driver cleaning program as well)? Or using an older set?

Yeah, the only thing I could think of is outdated drivers.
However, I would also recommend opening up your case and cleaning it out with compressed air and maybe one of those dust collector brushes. If for no other reason then regular maintenance. Dust build up on the inside of a computer is never good.

Error message in Windows XP: "STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER"

Drivers are the latest version.

Two other things it could be. Even though it's giving you a completely unrelated error, is your PSU supplying enough juice? And is the card staying cool? When cards overheat they tend to throw blue screens.

Since you said it usually only happens when playing graphic intensive games, it sounds like you're overheating.

It's just a stab from the wild, but that's my 2 cents.

Resolved: Rolled back to the drivers that the card and motherboard shipped with.

NVIDIA Forceware was the culprit.

Now running Driver Version 6.14.11.7519.

No problems whatsoever. Sometimes, newer is not better.

Lock thread if you wish.

Your fans are working good right? I'd hate to see this be a problem with the graphics card memory/GPU because the fan stopped running

Thanks, but like I said, the problem has already been fixed via rolling back drivers.
