Tired of Window?s extremely annoying processes that run without you knowing? Well, here?s how you can terminate these processes and get better performance from your computer. These processes listed below are from almost all versions of Windows XP. Before I begin, I would like to remind you that if your computer becomes damaged or screwed up in any way possible because of this, then it?s your fault, not mine, YOURS. Alright let?s get started.
Now, to access the background processes that are running on your computer, open up the task manager (I think you know how to do this now), and click on processes. You?ll see a bunch of text and stuff, and this guide should help you eliminate the correct ones, without killing your PC.
1. ctfmon.exe I can?t exactly remember what this process does, but it isn?t necessary for you to have it running. So go ahead and end its process. This process is activated every so often, like when you run Xfire, or Steam, this process will start running.
2. alg.exe labeled as a LOCAL SERVICE process. Again, I don?t remember what this process does, but you don?t need it. So go ahead and end its process. This process is only included in Service Pack 2 for XP.
3. winlogon.exe labeled as a SYSTEM process. I would leave this process be, because this allows you to log into your account for your computer. So, leave this one be.
4. explorer.exe Unless if you don?t need the desktop icons, and the start button to run your programs, then I would not end this process. But, if you can use the task manager to run games, then you can end this process to save quite a bit of memory. Just remember to reactivate this process once you are done playing games!
5. svchost.exe labeled as a SYSTEM process. DO NOT END ANY OF THESE PROCESSES. If you do, then your computer will act strange, and it will highly likely not be fun to use. So do not bother with any of these processes.
