ok. im thinking of buying a new video card but idk what brand i should go for. i found one that is a good deal (i wanna spend as little as possible) but idk if its a good type of video card.

EVGA 8400GS Video Card (PCI-Express, 512MB).

Does anyone know if this type of video card is good. if not any suggestions.

No, that card is really bad. Can you give us your computer specs for us to prefer a better card than what you chose?

Yeah, that'd be like a 4 series.

You'd want something like a 8600, 8800, 9600, 9800, those are all good and generally high end (I have an 8800 GT, and I can run crysis with a very good framerate, and it wasn't that expensive)

Im thinking of building a new pc up but the only prob is the video card.

im currently using my laptop with a ati x1400 mobility 128mb

Go with a 9600 or higher 9600 is a lower end card but the 9800GT or GTX would rock you, a 200 series would work out well too.

Well, considering your using a laptop. You can't upgrade your video card.

If you mean your building a PC and need a good suggestion for a video card, go with atleast a 9800 GT or a ATI 4850. Depending on your price you can go higher.

I'm running an 8600GTS, which is brilliant, happily runs TF2 windowed on a dual-screen set-up, so it'll happily handle anything.
I bought that over a year back tho, so an 8800 really shouldn't cost too much, but that should be your base-plate. Really you'd want to be looking at either a 9600 or a 9800 for gaming now.

(avoid the #300 or #400 models if you can) They're not really designed with gaming in mind and you'll usually find them in cheaper base-units and laptops. They can handle games reasonably well, but the #600 and #800 models are far better value for money.

I haven't had much experience with ATI cards recently, so I can't give much advice on those.

ya with all nvidia cards with number in the thosands the first number is the generation and the next one kinda defines it's range 3 and 4 for this number are low end and 6 and 8 are the upper end

personally I have the 8800GTX from BFG and its great but you cant get it any more. I found the 9800GTX at newegg for $130 which is a good dead here is the link:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143162

about the ATI I have used ati before and personaly the nvidia based cards are better at turning out high frames.

Also to note they dont make the old generations that bulletsinthefire was talking about. He also forgot about the 7 generation line. Personally the 9 generation line is really good. The card I showed you will give you very good bang for your buck.

ya but the 9600GT is not the best since the 9800GTX is uber cheap and its good. The GT is to me a entry level card but the 9600 is a mid level card so its an ok card but if you have dual screens you want power. But both are very good cards. but

at bulletsinthefire

they might still make it but newegg or the local large computer shop (infonec) where I live doesnt carry it anymore.

it would run steam games fine on high settings

I highly doubt a 8400GS would play all Source Games w/ high settings and even 4x CSAA/MSAA... My 7900GT hit 40 frames at 1920 x 1200 @ max settings 2x CSAA... And that card is better than a 8400GS

for Nvidia Id go with: 9600GT/9800GT/GTX or GTX260

for ATi Id go with, 4770 / 4870. Depemding on your budget
