Why Acer Rocks

I came home, kicked my puppy (that's slang for turned on my PC), and, what that? my monitor went blank after two seconds. Urg. Went through the usual troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue: tried different cable, tried monitor on different pc, tried different power cable (hey, you never know), tried taking the back off and blowing out any dust, still the same thing: turn it on, the logo flashes on the screen, the desktop would show up for about two seconds, than darkness.

Sooo.....I bought this monitor back in 07 from Newegg (they warranty monitors for 30 days :chair:), so no help there. So, I called Acer. They have a 3 year warranty on their monitors, and mine is still covered. What? Cheap monitor maker Acer covers their stuff for three years? I was surprised, and happy, that they're gonna replace my monitor (I have to pay the shipping to them, they pay shipping back to me).

ACER Fails

They gave me one with dead pixel

This isn't something that happens only with Acer, and surely isn't a reason to say they fail. Any computer I build for someone, I recommend sticking with an Acer Monitor if they want to keep it cheap, and I have yet to have any issue with them.

They gave me one with dead pixel

I've been reaaly lucky so far - never had an LCD with any dead pixels.
A friend got this really really really nice Samsung HDTV LCD monitor, huge, built in HDTV tuner, he was all excited, called me over and we hooked it up...and it had a dead pixel (green dot RIGHT THERE) and you can't look anywhere else because it's green; anyways he tried to take it back and they said no, had to have so many dead pixels. Now he just has to live with it :(

Anyway, I always dread buying a new LCD because of the dead pixel threat, and I feel for anyone who has to live with them.

This is my third Acer LCD, and the first one I've had any issues with.

they have a three year warranty because they know their products are horrible and often fail. sorry

My Acer monitor and Computer is beastly. Acer haters, Your just unlucky. I've had this 17" Monitor for...4 years? Not one problem. EVER! Same goes for the computer. The power supply did go out on the stock until around Thanksgiving last year, But that was my fault for being stupid.

My point is. This computer is 4 years old at LEAST. Not on problem that wasn't caused by myself, EVER! I support acer all the way.

I'm sorry, but this logic is some of the worst I have ever heard. There are two reasons companies have longer warranties, and neither have ANYTHING to do with the fail rate of their products.

1. They figure out what a longer warranty means in terms of sales gained by beating the competition versus what they would have to spend on warranty repairs. If it is profitable, they have longer warranties.

2. They care about their customers and want to ensure that they stand behind their product. This is more typical of small companies.

If you know your product is horrible and fails often, why would you have a long warranty? It would just cost you a ton of money to repair your failed products, and it would give you a bad rap on reviews. It would make more sense to spend the money on R&D and have a better product. You will sell more, and have less warranty repairs.

Acer is a fine company. They sell really crappy monitors for really cheap prices.

I'll probably be picking up a crappy Acer LCD from Wal-Mart sometime here soon. Because I don't need anything fancy, I just need a piece of crap that does the job.

If only until I have more money.

you can debunk my logic all you want, acer still generally makes less than decent monitors.

and besides, acer DOES spend a lot of money fixing their failed products.

just pointing out that companies like dell, sony, and hp sell many more products. Perhaps part of the reason for the higher number of returns.

Just pointing out that working as IT-support part-time in a local IT-shop, we had to fix and send off more Acer-computers than any other computers. Even very new ones. Even the Predator-series was pulled off the market because the beast was a firehazard. And I have an Acer-laptop, have had it for a year now and just bought a new computer because this lazy bastard broke its' cooling fans in less than 3 months of me buying it and I've had - since then (9 months) - to cool this off with a tableside, external fan to be able to play anything besides solitaire. Call me unlucky, call the customers that I had to inform that yeah we had to ship your computer back to Acer so they could replace what was broken unlucky, but for me Acer fails.

Note. I was speaking of Acer-computers not monitors, I have no experience in those except for this laptop's own and this works perfectly. :)

Just wanted to update this -

My repaired monitor arrived yesterday.

The repair statement says the monitor is still covered by the original manufactures warranty, or 90 days from the repair date, whichever is longer. Since the monitor was about 2 and a half years old, it's still got a few months left under warranty.

Total repair time including transit was 13 days, with an out of pocket expense for shipping of about 20 dollars (the Acer repair center is around the Dallas, Tx area.)

Acer might not sell high-quality stuff, but their prices are not high, either.
