Okay, I see a lot of people who refuse to use the Huntsman because it is harder to kill other snipers with it. I just decided to share a few tips I've learned about how to use it. These are mainly for snipers who try to advance with your team, which is what the Huntsman is best at, not arrow spam. If you use it to try and get points, you're using it wrong. Yes, sometimes you end up having to arrow spam when faced by a large horde, but aside from that you should try to aim with it instead.

1: Wait for shots. If a scout comes running in, all to often I see people just randomly shoot off arrows. A good scout will dodge back and forth so you miss. If you wait for them to come closer to you where you can hit them in the head, you will have more chance of killing them. Sure it doesn't always work, there will always be one scout who can get past, but it works better than randomly shooting off arrows.

2: Take on small groups of enemies. You can easily take on three people with the huntsman if you do it right. I once killed a Medic, Pyro, and Soldier on Blackmesa who were on the point with me. Just take out the medic first, then the soldier, then the Pyro. If you think and Identify who is the biggest threat to you or the biggest help to the enemy and kill them first, you will survive.

3: Sometimes, it is just the best idea to run. If you know when you have to run and do it, you can ambush the enemy with a jarate-arrow combo later. If you see more than two scouts, a medic, heavy and pyro coming, just run around the corner, wait for them to pass, then shoot them in the back. The enemy who can't find you is your best friend.

These tips come from experiences I've had, mostly on Blackmesa and 2Fort. If you try some of these tips out, you will live longer, or at least get more kills. The sniper who advances with his team is a bigger help than the one who camps at the last point getting back-stabbed. Remeber, this is team fortress, not (insert name here) fortress. Getting points is all well and good, but having fun is the most important thing, and you're not going to have fun if your whole team doesn't work together.

i disagree with this statement on so many levels.

And why is that? Please, I'd like to know. If your team does not work together to achieve the objective (unless you are doing somthing hilariously funny as a team) you will be frustrated with you team mates, which will not be fun.

Some of this is good, some not so much. Typically taking out the Medic first is a good idea in any situation, but Pyros are your bane as a Huntsman user. Put one in their heads as soon as possible. Rockets can be at least partially dodged - fire cannot.

Also, the machete is your friend. About 15% of my Sniper kills are melee - throw Jarate on someone and hack them in two.

As far as running away goes....run around a corner and get ready to quickshot your assailant in the head. There's your solution.

i play as a lone wolf. i have plenty of fun on blackmesa regardless of what my "team" is doing. i like picking people off leaving the spawn with the fan and camping the hallways with the sandman. this doesn't require a team and i don't care if we get steamrolled every round.

i have never felt for one second frustrated with my "teammates". it is fun to listen to those who do get upset when the "team" doesn't do what they want them to do.

winning a round means nothing to me. i get my jollies pestering people and getting two or three of them to chase me around while i sandman and run.

i guess one could argue that i am helping the team by getting a couple of people distracted by getting them to chase me but this is purely coincidental to me having what i consider fun on the server.

not all people have the same idea of what "fun" is :P

Huntsman is good, But some times I like the Rifle Better. If you charge the arrow fully, sometimes it will shake and will miss the target completely.

The link says it all LOL

I will agree that the huntsman is definitely an offensive weapon, and that it's more effective up-close, otherwise the timing at far distances is sometimes hard to predict (or it is just plain luck).

I believe you gain speed with the use of the huntsman..

On defense, you always want the sniper rifle though, the shots go where you want them to go instantaneous (no leading necessary) and it can kill a sniper, spy, scout, and engineer with standard full health in one fully charged shot.

That's why M2 for the huntsman lets you put your arrow down w/o wasting an arrow.

some nice pointers there and each to their own, but i'll be sticking with the sniper rifle as it is.

I said kill the medic first because the pyro has to get closer to kill you, and the medic will keep healing the soldier if you don't kill him quickly. These are not supposed to be things you should do in every situation, they are just tips that I've found to be useful when somebody uses the huntsman. I'm not telling anybody to stop using the rifle either, I use it most of the time too, these are tips for people who have no idea what they are doing with the Huntsman.

If you need practice just go in black mesa and launch arrows down the vents, can't really dodge those.

good pointers there, but I think the sniper is better id kwhy, it seems alot easier to just pull off some closer shots then a sniper and noscopes

That's because you held it for five seconds after it was fully charged, which, by then, you should either be retreating or have fired already. What are you waiting for? o_O

I disagree with those two points a lot. Huntsman works best at medium distance, not up-close where both you and the Scout are boh very powerful and, quite frankly, he has the advantage because of his movement options and DPS. Against a Scout a distance, you simply need to map his trajectory and fire where they'll be, distance be damned. I can't tell you how many Scouts+ other people I've killed in the sewer room in 2Fort from the bottom of the sewer stairs because I waited for the health container to respawn, fired my arrow at it right when it respawned, and got the Scout right in the chest with a fully-charged shot. It's all about anticipation, not waiting for them to come closer.

You also should not be trying to take on groups of enemies by yourself. Like the Spy, you're a support unit, meaning you essentially make up the second line of offense on pushes or you take out high-priority enemies with clean hits. This doesn't change when you use the Huntsman, on the contrary it just allows you to do this work in more places (albeit with more risk, but not as much risk as the Rifle). The Huntsman does not have a DPS high enough which allows you to deal with many enemies in close-quarters situations. You may get lucky every once in a while, but often you're just in for a royal screwing.

I have difficulty with the huntsman sometimes. Maybe it's because i suck at physics and i can't aim high enough, but maybe i'll try some of your suggestions in terms of advancing offense support. Maybe i can be of more use. Thanks!

I find it better if you don't use the huntsman in places where the snipers usually are (IE: The Sniper Spots above the battlements on 2fort.

Its better to go to places snipers don't usually go, like the sewers or the base, etc.

Also if you hold it for too long, it will start shaking and where it hits is always not where you want it.

also if your a medic who is healing a sniper, don't go for ones with the huntsman, they still have to charge it up 100% to reach there target (thats the case for me)

also pyros can burn a friendly snipers arrow for extra damage, but this doesn't count towards an assisted kill.

That is exactly what I was telling people to do, which is advance with your mates into the enemy base and support them there.

Yes, but also just waiting at chokepoints, the sniper is deffensive, not an offence.
