Building a new computer for a friend!

lol i dont see why u posted this as in we cant make any recommendations but okay haha :)

Umm actually they arnt that amazing overclockers, they are decent. The 955 from reviews gets up to like 3.8 on stock voltages but anything above that there is stability issues even when upping the voltage. The review site could have gotten a bad CPU though. I know that the phenom have the fastest overclock in the world though from that video where they use LN and stuff.

I would went with a 4890 for the graphics card though and a 1000w Tuniq Ripper because it has an $80 rebate putting it to only 90 bucks. It was such a good deal i got one =)
Everything else is fine but its a shame he had to buy his operating system

Yeah I hate the feeling of getting attached to a machine that you build for somebody else

I saw a chart somewhere, I'll have to dig it up, I think it was on Tom's Hardware, where they had an overclocked Phenom II (only by a few hundred megahertz) compared to a stock i7 on several games and the Phenom II got an average of 15-20 frames higher on everything.

Those are not pure cpu benchmarks because games dont use all the 8 thread of the Corei7 ;)

The Phenom II x4 are not comparable to the core i7 im sorry to say..........The highest end phenom 955 is only comparable to a Core 2 quad Q9550 in most benchmarks. In a rare few does it actually compare up to the i7 920 but this is all at stock clocks.

Of course when it gets overclocked to around 3.8ghz the 955 beats the i7's at stock speeds. But then when you overclock the i7's past 4.0ghz it just demolishes the 955. I've heard stability problems with the 955 getting past 3.8ghz or even past 3.7ghz so that is a negative for the Phenom II x4.

In the end, the i7 920 is king and is a great blend of price and performance if you think about it. A place where i live even sells it for only 200 bucks brand new. Microcenter, you may have one around you so you better look ;) they sell the i7 920 for only 200 dollars brand new retail.
