The Pandemic That is Kalt

Thank you for the insightful perspective on this, Boyle, and it's clear that you express the paradigm of the eGO administrative policy which I obviously accept and support, but I do enjoy discussing this so I hope you won't mind if I respond to your post. I think anon's "dictatorial" idea is a poor one (I would rather simply ask a team if a player or two would be willing to swap talent) but I also respectfully disagree with some of your philosophical ideas on administration, namely the definition of fair play.

We have testimony here stating that playing with this imbalance is both unfair, frustrating, and no fun in addition to constant. Personally, as a player, I would much rather tolerate an eGO admin politely asking me or my teammates to swap a player than I would playing for team at a perpetual disadvantage. Simply asking players is going to tick them off far less than playing for severely disadvantaged team. Occasionally being dominated is a facet of the game, but I think to come in night after night only to find yourself out-manned, out-gunned, out-scored and cornered is inherently unfair to the players willing to stick it out on the Allies. Kalt and Avalanche have the stigma for being point-farming servers on Axis and great places to die for Allies and I don't suppose this is by our design or will.

I definitely see where you are coming from, as well as the other e's, and with no regrets I remember being an e. All I did was have fun, grab my flags and run up my body counts. My full concentration was on strategy and teamwork. I would pick maps at random and play both sides. I had no responsibilities and enjoyed playing games with adults and minors who believe in clean virtues, the eGO way. If there was a problem the admins would take care of it. Those were easier times.

ronpaul, when you become an admin that all changes and for the most part it is all worth it. This is your thread so I will not preach to everyone all the reasons why I enjoy being an admin. I will tell you the one reason why I do not give up being an admin and that is to do my small part in keeping adult values away from minors. Anyone with children knows what I am talking about. If adults or kids want to talk sex, drugs, or any other adult related topics great, just do not do it in an eGO server. It is immoral and many times against the law.

You have no idea how much time admining takes or how much it ruins playing the game for me. Admins must police the game, by paying extra attention to the text, and listen to voice chat ready to jump in with "It's only a game guys. Have fun!". I do that and next thing I know is I am dead again because ronpaul, Sau or some noob who "SHOULD NEVER KILL ME!!" (Sorry, I got carried away).:crying: caught me doing my admin job. We all know perfect timing is one of the keys to a kill or being killed. I get killed all the time when texting someone, because some jackass has a dirty mouth, or some jerk gets upset because such and such sucks on the sniper rifle and starts berating the poor beginner. Also admins must text as much as possible, otherwise we are adding to the disruption by voice spamming the serious players. I am over 50 and my typing iiiisssss ssoooooo slooooow. I knew I should have taken typing in high school! I do not have 3000 binds for every idiot I run across, which is at least every two or three games.

Sorry, I have been preaching and forgot I have been challenged about fair play. I do ok in Kalt. I am a team player and I play Allies and Axis close to 50% and always have. (It's not nice but I look down on people who play predominantly one side or the other).:scared: I love voice chat because teamwork wins, but if I go into a server where no one is talking, try voice strategy a couple of times with no response, I shut my mouth. That means my team will probably lose but as long as players have fun and get along, so be it. I am an admin, not a dictator.

It would be great to try and even out the teams by ability, but with players coming and going every few minutes and me trying to asses fairly both teams and, oops, I just talked a no-recoil hack into joining my team to even sides and make things fair. My bad! Now I have to stop making the teams fair and spectate so that I can demo the bad guy and follow my eGO procedures without screwing up. Now I am out of game and my team is down 4 people because three guys are in the bathroom and AFK. Where was I? Oh, I was trying to put together two really fair teams and make everyone promise they would wait to go to the bathroom at the end of the round.

ronpaul, my advice to you is pick your battles before becoming an admin. I am sure you would make a good one. Just remember your game will suffer and the more it does, the better admin you will make. If I had the power I would gladly give you your G and O now so that you would stop kicking my butt in Kalt!!

It may actually help to develop a list of strategies that are oriented to the allies for playing Kalt in this server. This may involve detailing some axis strategies and developing a counter tactic. I have numerous ideas, but most will have to wait until later. I played allied tonight for quite some time and we held the game at stalemate (with axis controlling the bridge predominantly) for ~2.5 hours. Axis eventually won, but it was fun.

I think one suggestion, which I think is the best, is to play as assault and use the smoke!!!. I don't know how many times an mg was covering main st on the allied side and all I did was threw down some smoke (wait for the inevitable random fire) then toss a nade where you know the mg is, or move up to a more strategic position. It's very simple, but very effective. Mg covering the sewers? Same thing! 1st ladder covered, drop smoke down and wait in the corner for it to dissipate (or shoot the random gunfire). Snipers and MG's should keep asking for smoke cover so they can get to strategic spots.

In the next couple days (if work allows) I will start taking pictures about the best places to bounce garand grenades off of for maximum damage, etc (atleast where I have found).

I would love to hear about peoples tactics for the allied side on this great map.

Well Boyle that makes an awful lot of sense. I hadn't thought of it that way but I can absolutely see your point. I guess I thought you admins were robots or something because the idea of ensuring everyone has fun at the expense of your fun never really occurred to me. :scared:

Everyone is obsessed with stats.

Including what server ranks we have.

I think RonPaul has a valid point about Kalt and why it's server rank isn't as high as it could be.

However right now...we have other issues that are causing our servers to drop in the ratings...thanks alot steam!

Hence why I think Kalt Snipers are the most worthless class in the map

i would have to humbly disagree with you on that one Annihilator. I only play on Kalt, and you will rarely find me not as a sniper. i think that snipers are very useful on Kalt. Snipers are great for picking off people on the bridge, they are great for picking off pesky MG's posted in the sniper buildings, and they are great for picking off players on the streets. i find that many non-sniper players will try to run out and try and kill the MG before the MG lets off a barrage of bullets and most of the time they fail. but if you're a good sniper, you're reflex time and the speed at which the bullet is released from the rifle is so much faster than an MG's that 90% of the time, i can pick off MG's.

that's just my opinion though :)

Thats well and good for the geniuses that come and rush the bridge, but those of us who flank through the sewers are a whole other story. I couldn't tell you the last time a sniper killed me in Kalt, I kid you not, its been forever. I play Kalt all the time as well. My point is for the strategic players who play often and play well, Sniper class is about the easiest class to pick off, because they rarely watch their flanks, because they are focussed on the bridge. I have preached this tactic for the last year, I can cap the bridge a whole lot faster comming from behind enemy lines then 6-8 guys rushing bridge from the surface.

However, I bet a sniper will be happy with 6-8 kills versus 1 death per round.

I think you missed his point; he's saying that he doesn't use that tactic of rushing the bridge from above ground, he'd rather come up from behind using the sewers (that's what she said anyone?), thereby neutralizing the sniper easily and preventing the sniper from getting any kills let alone 6-8. Hence Anni saying that the sniper class is junk on Kalt.

Until that snipers skull explodes from getting punched in the back of the head by me.

Honestly, Kalt is one of the 3 main maps i play (with Donner & Strand the other two) And, as in real life, a fight isn't always a fair battle for both sides. One team might have to overcome a disadvantage, i.e. the allies have the disadvantage in this map. That doesn't matter if you play the game correctly. I like playing as Axis because i just love serving up a bowl of mashed Potatoes :P

You can look at Strand as the same thing, the Allied spawn points can be easily rained on by Axis MG fire from the bunkers and the 3 mortars directed @ the beach, however, the Allies can easily win on that map if played right.

Story is, play the game right and have a good team, and you can do anything, doesn't matter the odds.

ive definitely killed you before anni. Just wait until I get my laptop back and am playing again.

I think you missed his point

Nope.

What I was trying to say, though probably poorly worded, was that a sniper on the bridge is usually successful (atleast in my experience) at killing more than one person per round (more if they are ronpaul). Now if you rush around (an excellent tactic, no doubt) and are successful, they could have had ~1-6 kills per that round. My kd ratio is like 1.3 or something terrible like that, so as a sniper I would be happy even if my skull is crushed.

Finally, I often try and rush around through either sewer or wheelhouse and you know why it is so satisfying to crush the sniper in the head? Because it only works periodically. If it always worked, i would agree that the sniper on this map is terrible, but deep down inside we know that's not true.

Yeah or probably the last, although I was killed last night by a sniper because I was rushing the surface.

My KDR used to be about 2:1 with assualt/support when I was playing religiously. Its still not unheard of for me to kill 7:1 atleast a couple times in one round. I rush everywhere, i do not stop, only to reload.

TBH kalt is all about how well you play, if you play well either team has a chance to win, statistics dont matter :P

i love kalt sewers :)

and to answer the original point of this thread, I do switch teams a lot on kalt to try and even them if one team is losing (which does happen to have me switching to allies a lot). The only thing is I am terrible with a springfield, so I usually just end up running around with a thompson and not making much of a difference because of the aforementioned mg42's and 1 shot kill k98's.

This is a very interesting thread. I should preface my comments by stating I never play Kalt anymore -- only Flash really -- which imo is the most balanced map out there, among the traditional maps at least. But ronpaul raises an issue I have thought about for some time as well.

As a rookie member, I'll say I joined up because eGO, as an organization, seems to be about maturity and fair play. But there seems to be a practical limit to how much of that you can enforce as an admin and Boyle demonstrated the truth of this in his posts.

But that does not mean that the concept of honorable play should be thrown out the window, I just don't think it can be enforced.

I wonder, however, if there exists a polite way (short of posting on these forums) to express verbal displeasure when people on purpose do something dishonorable which nevertheless is not technically illegal -- like switching over to the winning team to pad one's stats even though you know by doing so you are stacking the numbers against the team you left behind.

Or remarking how people are lagging and if they were not you would dominate them easily. (NOTE: This is just a more sophisticated variant of the "I think he's hacking" strat which IS of course illegal though rarely policed from what I've seen). Or when it's like 2v2 (I speak of Flash since that again is the only map I play now) to play an MG42 or a sniper to assure you control the one chokepoint. Or messing around in the back while your team gets massacred up front. Or mocking or bullying players when they don't do what you want them to do. Etc.

Obviously, people are who they are and play how they play. It's always a bad idea imo to legislate ethics since ethics are often situational. So I guess all this will forever remain in the realm of the theoretical. As other have said, probably the best thing to do is play on the map you think is the most balanced.

But - ugh - some things do make me angry.:chair:
