Help with re-installing a game I bought in steam

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me with something.

I'm about to buy a new computer, a lap top, and it's a really good one which permits me to play games on it as well. Now I bought L4D in steam just a few months a go and I'm wondering how I can re-install it on the lap top, because all the data is on the normal PC.
I know you can make a back-up through steam, but what should I do? Copy this to an external hard disc/USB stick or a CD/DVD and then copy it to the new computer?
What files would I need to make sure I copy?

Thanks for your help, and I hope I placed this thread in the right topic.

Not 100% sure but I think it's enough if you re-download and install the steam client on the new laptop you just bought.

Then enter the username and password you currently use ( don't make a new profile, instead use the one you already have ) and you should have L4D under the "my games" tab, ready to be downloaded/installed.

I would recommend what Shuppa said, If you try to copy files over from your destttop to laptop steam could get all mad at you then lock you out.

Just download steam on the laptop and log in with your steam account, then it will have L4D ready to re-download.

Just delete the games downloaded on the pc you have now, when you get the new one install steam and reinstall the games.

ya you can reinstall/re-download like everyone said but if you don't want to re-download all of your games just copy your "steamapps" folder to your steam install on your laptop.

the steamapps folder is where all steam games are stored

for reference

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps

assuming C:\ is the windows partition
