Novint Falcon Experience Thread

COD4 is the first game we're working on getting working with F-Gen ;). Hopefully we'll be able to get some good forces in. thx, tomnovint

Alright, I figure its time I give a a little review of my falcon experience ;)

The games I have played it with: HL2, L4D, TF2, and BF2. (I have been to busy in college to try Css)

HL2-

WOW. I have never had more fun playing a game before. This takes Half life and adds so much fun to the game play. I tried to play without the falcon after my first run though and it just was not the same. The feeling you get when you use your weapons is amazing. I was able to feel the different weight of objects when I used the gravity gun and could the recoil, well the recoil was simply superb. I was EXTREMELY impressed with the impressiveness the falcon provides to the game compared to a mouse. As far as the controls of it, I have not played HL2 in a while before I got the falcon so my familiarity with the weapons was about the same.(for mouse vs. falcon) I did much better using the falcon. Being able to sense where the damage comes from and using a pistol grip to actually aim makes for a much more fluid reflex.

TF2-

TF2 is a game that the falcon was meant for. For lack of a better term, the game has guns with sloppy handling, where aiming is more of a motion, but also can quickly switch to a game that requires absolute precision. (pryo and sniper) The falcon has the control and the flexibility to do both of these. Sniping with the falcon is much easier than with a mouse. The controls for other classes were also much easier to control. Using a heavy and a pyro was much easier with the falcon. Being able to sense where I was being attacked from allowed me quicker reactions and improved my survivability by a lot.

L4D-

L4D compared the benefits from both TF2 and HL2. The feeling of being there was amazing. When a zombie horde comes up and starts hitting you, you could feel the hits coming from every direction. When a lone zombie ambushes me, I am much quicker to respond. I don't have to do a quick 360 flip like I do with a mouse. I can feel the direction that I am being attacked from the falcon and can more quickly and accurately take out the threat.

BF2-

When I first played BF2 with the falcon, I had more trouble when with the source games. I had trouble aiming at first, but once I got the hang of it, it became very easy. Once I mastered shooting, I tried my hand at flying. I am normally a very good pilot, I used to do stunts for videos even. However, the falcon was very hard to fly with. I like how it basically became a flight stick.(I swapped out the pistol grip for the ball for flying) At first, I had no clue that to go up and down, you pushed the falcon in and out. Once I figured this out, I could actually take off from the airstrip ;) However, the movements felt a little sticky for my personal preference. I would either go in too far, resulting in over turning, or not far enough and I would not move as much as I needed to. This would result in over compensating and many frustrating crashes. I tried upping and lowering the sensitivity, but nothing seemed to help me. Two other things I that I did not like about BF2 was the recoil and not being able to use a mouse. I was expecting some amazing recoil, using machine guns like the SAW, shooting a rocket launcher, and driving a tank, but even with the settings maxed, it was like shooting the pistol from HL2. I was semi disappointed by this, but it would not deter me from buying a falcon. I also mentioned not being able to use a mouse. I found that to be annoying because I could in all the other source games I have and found it easier to use a mouse in menus then the falcon(because of my inexperience). Like I mentioned with the recoil, this would not stop me from buying a falcon because of this functionality, but it was an annoyance.

Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend getting the falcon. You will enjoy your games more and play better with a falcon.

thanks blackhawksniper - appreciate the review, and the constructive criticisms in BF2. We'll keep those comments in mind for future development. Appreciate you taking the time!

thx, tomnovint

I just have to say that recall seeing ur product online on one of the major gaming sites, and thinking of how cool it is, i am a perhipial enthusiaest , as an example i bought a saitek x52 pro just for BF2 flying a few years ago for whioch it was amazing and a nostromo recently....i kinda regret the nostromo.

I was at first concerned with the fact that it may just be a perhipial that works well only with single player games, in that it has great immersion potentional but not great competitive potential in games such as CSS and COD 4,

but i have played around with ur product with friends and i have to say it is the bees knees for L4D..... i think if u found a way to bundle your product with L4D 2 or even L4d 1(which has a new map pack coming out in oct.) you may find a nice niche and make some great bank

I havent bought my own yet but i will have one before thanksgiving....foshoo

thanks for your note b00m3chO. Appreciate it. Let me know when you get yours ;) I'll check on L4D2.

thx!

Now I am really temped to buy one. My one question is does it kind of handle like a console controller or is it a totally new experience? I've heard some people talk about it being easy to out maneuver people using the Falcon but from that people that have used it they say it adds a whole new level to the game. From the force feedback and such.

I am also wondering how often people are picked for the giveaway.

Hey K!nky, thanks for your note. It is more like a mouse than a console controller (though it has aspects of both). Most of the aiming is very familiar to mouse users. It's immediately useable for mouse users (which I know given my experiences from people walking up at trade shows), so first person single player games will have a new dimension right away. The Falcon does have a learning curve for online gaming, to be as competitive as the mouse.

I have been playing a lot of pyro recently in TF2 - put about 10 hours into playing pyro the past few weeks. In close combat I can almost always outmaneuver mouse based pyro players. It's easy to track scouts at close range as well. In general I think that is one of the strengths of the Falcon, not a weakness. I think people who are getting up to speed might have problems, but with practice, that is an area where the Falcon excels.

thx, tomnovint

Tom, you'll be happy to know that I won a free falcon through the TF2 Casino Thieves Royale event that we've hosted recently. I was the first to dominate all 10 leadership with =(eGO)=™ BFM giving out a free falcon to the first to dominate all 10 TF2 leaders... Looks like I'll be able to give you an actual review here in a week or two. :D

Right on Deja! that's great. Looking forward to your review ;) Remember to give the Falcon a decent amount of time (20 hours or so) before you really compare it to a mouse in online play, but the immersive and fun components of it will be immediately apparent.

thx, tomnovint ;)

Thanks for the quick reply Tom!

That's very interesting, I never considered the time it takes to adapt from a keyboard to a mouse (I have the same problem when I switch mice/screens). I can see how great it can be and just how much it adds with the force feedback.

Looking forward to the next opportunity to win one ;) cause college tuition isn't quite helping...

what is Novit falcon it looks weird and what does it do i didn't get what it is i think it has to do with like a mouse or somthing if i am right then ill stick to my mouse :P

I just made a new video that shows what the Falcon does in online games like TF2, with picture in picture.

here's an older video that describes more how it works in FPS's more broadly

I've had my falcon for 2 days now. Probably 2-3 hours of play with it so far. I'll give a little review about how it is at first. I'll post another one after I've had more time with it.

Positives:
The thing I love the absolute most is the feeling you get when you do... well anything! Its an amazing feeling shooting a low kickback weapon like pistols to the huge recoil weapons like shotguns. It really helps to immerse yourself into the game. Many times now while playing Half-Life 2 I'd spend probably 5 minutes running into walls and picking up random junk just to feel it through the falcon. When I first played Counter-Strike: Source I spent half an hour cycling through all the weapons just to feel the recoil. Also, with the falcon I no longer have the lift+turn problems with the mouse. The "springy walls" is such a huge improvement over the mouse. Also I know I'll never get the problem where the mouse will magically move toward the keyboard and right when I need to look to the left to survive I'll hit the keyboard and screw myself up and die. Its impossible with the falcon. This fine piece of hardware was for sure a great investment.

Negatives:
The only thing I'm noticing is a problem with the "springy walls" that you use to play FPS games. I keep finding that the "springy wall" on one side of the falcon will end up disappearing making it so I can't turn in that direction. Essentially the aiming space shifts over so the springy wall on one side is gone. I have to then fumble around with it a little to try to reposition it. Its not a huge deal but it does get in the way of playing from time to time. I'm pretty sure this is because I haven't gotten used to the falcon completely yet and I just got to find the correct position that works for me.

I did think about buying a falcon....I did worry over whether it would cause arm ache...any thoughts on this?

If your computer chair has an arm rest all you do is rest your arm on it while playing. I can probably go half an hour before I notice anything. Even then I just take a quick stretch and I'm good for more.

sorry for the delay in responses - have been buried recently.

thx, voteforpedro ;)

Dirk Diggler, I use default settings on control. I turn the default forces down just a bit, as I've gotten more competitive in TF2. I leave them on, though, for the feedback they give, and the advantage it gives (like feeling where you were shot from). Default settings are the way to go if you're having troubles getting up to speed. I've heard many times people were frustrated, then took that advice, and after 10 hours, were comfortable with the Falcon and getting much better.

izPhil, sounds like your Falcon is slipping a bit. The walls shouldn't move. Occasional slippage is normal. You can hit escape in a game to where you have a 2D cursor, then move each of the Falcon arms all the way out and all the way in, and it will recalibrate on the fly. If it loses calibration too often, there are little plastic pieces we can send you to insert under the wires to tighten them up a bit. If you already have the little plastic pieces and it is loose, then we may need to get you a replacement unit.

Advo, in the past month, I have typically played 5-6 hour sessions several times a week. You have to spend some time getting your workspace set up the right way, but when you do, it is comfortable.

thanks all, tomnovint
