External graphics cards?

For some post processing chores and video editing duties, yes. For general OS and game use, no.

hmmm i dont remember where but there are some for gaming use. ATI has some 4 series ones which i heard work wonders compared to the notebook GPU. I just forgot where i saw them being sold.

Edit: ahhh i found it, i remember i was looking at computer builds on Xoticpc.com and when you customize a laptop, they have the option of buying an external graphics card, its made by vidock2 and the one they have is like a 4670 but it says its upgradeable so im guessing you could put something even faster in it. The thing seems expensive though, its a $300 add-on to the laptop build price.

From reading this, it seems that you can buy a blank Vidock2 and put an ati radeon card in it. I would reccomend this because the vidock2 with the 4670 is expensive and the performance isnt worth it. But if the blank vidock2 is just as expensive, then i would just get it with the GPU.

It seems like a really really good invsetment though if you only use a laptop. They say that it will be able to support all the future cards also so its pretty much futureproof.

I made a thread about the Vidock2, there is a lot more information on it about the external GPU and performance benchmarks and such. I also have some links there which sell this Vidock2 as well as information on upcoming Vidock's. The link i posted here also sells the vidock2 at $380
