You've gotta think though -- despite the fact that Achievement Servers provide hollow Achievements to people who look for a quick bragging right, the difference between the Achievement Servers and Idler is user input. The Idler was a third-party program and you had to do nothing, the Achievement Servers actually involve you doing something, even as minimal as it is.
If I was Valve, I'd be a bit timid at third-party systems exploiting the game, but that's just me.
But the idling program was built from the SDK source.
And Drunken_fool who developed it even contacted Valve about it being a problem. THEY NEVER CONTACTED HIM BACK ABOUT IT.
Actually there are achievement_idle servers...the only difference is one runs in TF2 and the other doesn't...well that and anyone who idled in an achievement_idle server is not a cheater.
Ignorance is bliss and silence is golden, yet the program was gilded. The fact still stands that it was a third party program and was an exploit and there's nothing we could've done about it. I'm not defending Valve or the Idler in any way, but an exploit's an exploit and I'm not one to say who's right or wrong but the Idler was anything far from 'fair' and neither is Valve's Hat drop system.
I assume you were an idler, so go do some idling in our servers, that's what I'll be doing in help of redeeming my character and actually help seeding for once, it can't hurt.
What did the idler do? Except allow people who may not have all day to spend on a game to ge tthe same chances as people who do. Its not an unfair advantage its a fair one...
Can't, but I'm not allowed to say why...
The Hats are part of the game (dammit, I just lost) and sure, the Idling program made it appear that people were playing. I'm logged for playing 158.7 hours in the past two weeks, but was I actually playing for the allotted time gathered? Of course not. It's simple, people who play the game for what it is, despite how long or well they played, should be rewarded with a Hat regardless of the horribly low drop rate the system has. Most of the heads at Valve probably didn't care that much until someone brought it up like that and that's when it got hairy.
You play the game, you get a hat (maybe).
You seem like you're playing the game but not, you don't get a hat.
Science!
Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We've also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats.
But also, in the time since all this madness was released, I have found 1 hat and about 8 items total. The system is broken.
