is a 9400 GT good until i get a GTX 260 in december?
and no ridiculous posts like
"get an i7 with a 295"
i dont plan on running every game on max either, at least until i get my 260 ^.^
EDIT:
also, i am wondering how well this does at 1280x1024 and 1368x768

it depends i never used a 9400 but iv had a 9500 for a while it can handle all source games but i wasn't able to put the anti-alising up as much as i wanted. but if your getting a better card in 3 months im sure you can hold out with lower quilty settings till than

I'd hold out, save the money you were going to spend on a new card, and get a better card in Decemeber than a 260.

But, if that's not the scenario, the 9400/9500/9600's will be able to hold their own in source games. 1280 x 1024 shouldn't be a problem.

By December, the prices on the 200 series cards should go down since the 300 series will just be coming out.

I have a 260 GTX and at 1280x1024 on my main monitor it runs 80-120FPS on max settings. It depends on your rig too not just your video card. I would go with a 280 and up since they will be cheaper by then. I plan to upgrade to a 280 or so this xmas. Hopefully.

i desperately hope you're talking about tf2 performance with that.
but anyway, the 260s will drop in price too since everything else will drop in price, maybe thats what hes already hoping for? Well if you want a 260 (which is a great card) get the black edition
heres the benchmarks of the basic 260 vs black edition vs 4870 1gb

I wouldn't buy a new card and then by another one three months later. Unless your current card is broken or just so abysmal you can't tolerate playing on it in any way.

Are you going to be buying the 9400 or do you have a way to get one for nothing or next to nothing?

9400 are cheap but by the time Xmas comes, i would get a better card than a GTX 260 considering a 4890 is already $185 and is a lot faster than a GTX 260
If you are going to get a GTX 260, go for the new black edition, that thing is faster than a GTX 280 or just on par, from the benchmarks i read, it either matches the GTX 280 or is just a bit slower but not by much.

I personally am waiting for a 5870x2 when it comes out and hopefully it drops in price by Xmas if it comes out on Sept 10 along with the 5850 and 5870 but i doubt it will. Im gonna guess it will come out a month after the inital release which is around october and then hopefully drops in price by christmas. Maybe even black friday?

The 9400 should do fine though till you upgrade if you really need the 9400, if not just stick with your current card and put the money towards a faster card.

im building a new machine, and i want a budget card so everything runs at least on low. and depending on the price of the GTX 285 by then, I'll just get the 260 Black Edition.
But thanks for the help guys

thanks for the link, that really helps my opinion.

Seriously both you and Clark if you are thinking of buying new cards to run at 1280 and 1378, save your money and buy a new monitor instead. You are literally throwing your money out the window, you do not need to run games at 100+ FPS, the human eye is physically incapable of processing that difference. Even currently a 260 can easily power a 24" monitor at pretty nice settings.

Buy a nice monitor and you will be way happier.

Ahhh I thought you had the 260 and were trying to upgrade. Yeah I agree with the above statements, a 260 is really all you need, if you are thinking of upgrading your LCD with a bigger resolution it`ll be worth it to move up to a 280.

yea, but do you know of any cheap cases that will fit the 260?

I agree with what their saying also, whats your CPU? If you have a horrible CPU but an awesome graphics card your not going to see great pref.

yea its called bottlenecking. 80108 why dont you get a gtx 275 or gtx 285 by the time xmas comes, a gtx 260 is good but its not amazing. You wont see it running games other than source games well at 1920x1080. Its by no means a terrible card but a GTX 280 isn't really that good of an upgrade.

Here is a site showing the older GTX 260 black edition matching up to the performance of a GTX 280. There is a newer GTX 260 black edition out on newegg with faster stock speeds which may get even better frames than this and when they overclocked their older GTX 260 black edition, they got a FPS boosts of around 4-6 FPS which helped it either beat or match the GTX 280 in games it was a bit behind.

GTX 260 Black edition (newegg, new one) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150399

Basically what im trying to say is, either get that black edition gtx 260, or have a second upgrade option that is better like a gtx 285. gtx 275, or a ati 4890.

The GTX 275 is pretty much the same (both have 240SP) just different clocks, you can always overclock it yourself very easily and you can get one for right around $200 now. By December, they should most definitely be around $150 or so. I think 280's and 285's are a waste of money besides you can get them with a full 2gb memory.

A 260 has been released with 1792 memory.

Maybe you could get something like a 9600 for now, get the 260 at Christmas, and use the 9600 for Physix processing... Or perhaps put it in a spare build or sell it and get a few bucks back out of it.

I came from playing on a Laptop and let me tell you, playing everything on Very High settings makes everything a whole new game.

Consider just getting a used 9600 from eBay since its only temporary. You can get one super cheap there, they currently have quite a few for $45.

BTW , a 9400 has only 16 stream processors and 128bit, while the 9600 has 64SP and 256bit. . Thats a whole lot more juice and should be sufficient to play Source games on HIGH.

read the article, it basically tops the 280 if you OC it a bit, and even tops a 4870x2 for a couple of games. its a worth while card. as for dimensions this thing is 4.376" tall and only 10.5" long. i have a micro ATX case this will fit in which cost me only 50 bucks. so i wouldn't worry too much about space for a mid/full size case

Hey man....i posted that already 2 posts before yours :P
way to steal lmao, but idk about the thing topping a 4870x2.........a 4870x2 is much faster than a GTX 260 black edition in games that support it and have good driver support. The 4870x2 performs poorly though in Crysis as usual compared to the Nvidia cards and thats about it. I dont really know that many games where a GTX 260 black edition beats out the 4870x2 other than that. Anyhow the 4870x2 is a great card overall and the thing is a beast when the games support it.
