Champions online - Worth it?

Hi all,

Ive been intrested in mmorpg's for some time now and after recently retiring from WoW and Warhammer Online ive been taking a look at Champions online.

I just want to know from those who have recently purchased the game, what you think of it so far...

What i am looking for is a unique game to other mmo's such as WoW and WAR, im not phased by graphics, i just want a good game that i can get stuck into to help pass the time when i finish my coursework.
The only thing I am worried about is spending ?30 on a game to only play the free month and get bored of it.

I have not been looking at it long so I know very little about the game apart from the wide variety of customation which does attract me but I want it to be more than that. Also, is it a fatality type game?.. (You die, you loose items in you inventory) If so, i wont touch it.

Please let me know if its worth the ?30 pounds and does it keep you coming back for more, cheers for taking the time to read this and thanks in advance :)
 
Do not, i repeat Do Not get champions online, its horrible, it might aswell be a free mmo, if your looking of that sort go do a free trial of City of Heroes/Villains, its a way better version of champions. thats my opinion, i loved city of heroes/villains and tried this and was disgusted, got look it up and do the free trial

I'll post in contrast to the others here. Yes there are launch week issues, but overall I love the game. I am an ex-City of Heroes player.

If you don't like being involved from the beginning and suffering through down time, changes and some stability issues that come with a fresh launch, wait a few months then give it a try.
 
I have to say that I am impressed with Cryptic so far. Yes there have been a few LAUNCH issues, but every MMO out there has had some and most have been way worse than what CO has gone thru. Yesterday was the worst I have seen it, but what impressed me, whether true or not, is that after it was over Cryptic came out and explained what happened and then gave out a free day to anyone that was a paying subscriber already. THEY EXPLAINED WHAT WENT WRONG AND APOLOGIZED FOR IT!! How many mmo's do that? Servers werent even down for a whole day, they were down for about 8 or 9 hours and people got a free day for it. And has been the case so far, Cryptic has been making sure the playerbase that is affected by issues has been compensated so far in some fashion and we are only on day 4 of the game since released. Sounds like they are doing something right.

I give them a B+ so far and can only see this game getting better. They know what what people liked and disliked with CoX, since they made it, and seem to be trying to remedy as much of that as they can.

As for those that say "This game sucks, dont get it" or "Don't get this game" or any other number or comments like that, YET they dont give you any reasons, are just trolls looking to stir up trouble. Its fine if you want to give us your opinion that it sucks, but at least tell us why you think so.

As for whether to get the game or not, well if you don't mind playing a just released MMO and dont mind going thru the growing pains associated with that then give this game a try. It has an AMAZING Character creator(I spent over 90 minutes last night making my 5th character) with way more options than you could hope for. The game play is good so far and they are fixing bugs and trying to balance powers as they go(as with any mmo).

but yea i agree ALL mmo's that just came out will ALWAYS have some problems and if you check their website you'll see that they are constantly fixing it. now my review on it just from playing the open beta (im getting the game tomorrow :D) is that it is one of THE FUNNEST (that doesn't mean most in-depth) game i have ever played, for one thing yes the character creater is AMAZING not in just the fact you can customize your characters appearence but in powers as well, you can change the colours of your powers and where they come out of, the effects of all these powers chain together smoothly. along with the fact that theres no rule against having duplicate names so you can pick a name without having to worry about another player having it. as for the in-game itself you can choose from any power you want once in game, so for example your a duel-swords person you can still get any fire attack you want or ice or electricity etc. The leveling is fairly easy with the cap being 40, and after the first day of release they have already announced their planes for an expansion (its based around halloween themes) as to your question about deaths and loosing your stuff exp and such (i hate that as well) there is no death penelty you will get a small debuff everytime you die but thats so you cant just keep running around suicide running the same guy so my recommendatoin GET IT!!!! and if you do join my group i created for champions players it can be found here :)

very nice review! covered just about everything :) but itd be impossible to cover everything id just like to add to the graphics tho that the comic book style can be turned off if you really dont like the way it looks
 
I find this to be very enjoyable. So far I hit 13 and I only had to party 2-3 times. So far its very solo-friendly. Dunno about upper levels though.

The Devs made the game as solo friendly as possible, even the higher levels are soloable.

Thanks for everyones post... sorry I didnt reply up until now, been busy. I have bought the game but the servers are down at the moment :( I never played city of hero's but i know i am going to enjoy this game, I have seen all the video reviews and all official videos on youtube and have read plenty about it. And I have to say I cant wait to play it. Everyone has an opinion. The game came at one o'clock today, its now 8:20 and i still havnt had a chance to play it yet :( I probably know the answer to this question but does anyone have any clue at all when the servers will be back up? I just think its funny that the producers said that the servers will be down from 1:00am till 1:30am.
 
well did you register your key? because if not the client will think you just kept the beta client and the game will not allow you to update and the servers will appear to be down. you can register your key here by clicking new customer

I did this before but it says i am on my 30 days free trail... Are the serverrs down for everybody else?
