So, I've posted one thread on this already, but out of desperation and lack of help from steam support, I'm coming here again.
About 1-2 months ago, I started to get massive netlag in game. Game-ending, impossible to deal with lag. It happens in game, and when just web-browsing, and it's very unpredictable. At times, I simply can't even load a page. Other times, I can browse the web fine. I can never get in a TF2 server without massive lag though.
I have no idea what's causing this, but I have it pretty firmly narrowed down to something with Vista 64-bit, which I'm running. Here's what I've done, and how I've come to the conclusion:
1.) I disable WLAN autoconfig with C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface="Wireless Network Connection 3". Vista is known to have that auto-network polling thing that causes bad lag. For a while, this worked. Then the problem resurfaced.
2.) I've tried Vista Anti-lag, and well as WLAN Optimizer. They haven't done a darn thing, but I still try them hopefully now and again to see if somehow it might help. It never does.
3.) I'm trying to use my wireless chipset maker's Wireless Lan Utility so that I can totally stop and disable the WLAN Autoconfig service through control panel > administrative tools > services menu. However, when I do this, I lose connection to the network and cannot find any networks, with Windows or the third party software, until I restart the service. Note: Disabling the service and stopping it this way is different than the note I gave in #1 above.
4.) When the problems started, I had a different router and network card. Bought a new NIC and router, and replaced the NIC first. The problem persisted. Replaced the router, and problems persisted. My signal strength is substantially better now, so I kept the new hardware, but the problem is still very much there.
5.) When I am getting this massive lag, it's like I have no connection to the network...except I sort of do. Drunkenf00l's idler still runs and maintains connection, and I can still do instant messaging. I just lose like 99% of my throughput, can't really do any web browsing or anything. And, as always, can't really do online gaming.
6.) There are many other machines that use this wireless network with great ease. Thankfully, they all have varying operating systems which have allowed me to narrow this down to a problem with Vista 64-bit. This includes a laptop with Vista 32 bit, a laptop with XP, my PSP using the PSP 3000 series OS and web browser, and they all work flawlessly, all the time.
7.) This weekend a friend of mine is coming over with an 80 foot cat-5 cable, every foot of which will be needed to get me to the router. Then we plan on diagnosing whether or not this is strictly a wireless issue or a problem with networking in general. I'm thinking it's just wireless, as Vista 64 is known to have lots of problems in that department. I'll update the results of that when I have them.
I am DYING to play TF2. I've got some decent single player games on here, but they're getting old. I miss my TF2 peeps, especially the parts where I stab them in the back. ;_;
If you can permanently solve this problem, pick your hat. I have 2 medic hats, 1 scout, 1 heavy, 1 spy, 1 demo hat. Take your pick. Or if you really want something else, I'll give it to you as soon as I get it. I've spent months of troubleshooting this problem and simply cannot find a solution. Halp!
