Mario is not "the" video game hero. He might be the video game icon or posterboy for video games, but certainly not the hero. He's a damn plumber who wanders around in whatever drug induced, star-filled fantasy Nintendo comes up with. Whether or not it makes any sense. And a good portion of the time, he doesn't even save anyone from any real danger. He saves people from being fat balloon people, saves Peach from a situation that wasn't actually all that dangerous, or something of the sort.
But he's no hero.
Gordon is a hero.
.....oh well....what do i know...i haven't played half life yet D:....Guess i'll have to pick it up for christmas
This poll is biased, I just now realized.
Gordon is sybolic, theres more to him and the story than meets the eye. And for mario...well read the description below, pretty spot on.You can't compare Gordon to Mario.
Mario has personality. Gordon does not.
/thread.

He's a scientist that saves the world from evil. Generic.
Mario, fantasy setting, saving a princess from homicidal turtles. More original.
And to be honest I'm not a big fan of either series.
Theres more story to Gordon than Mario.
I don't think I really need to explain the story behind Gordon, he doesn't need one. The fact that he was mute really endeared me to him, the unspoken word is more powerful than the spoken one sometimes. Gordon's unspoken one is being a hero with an interesting arsenal that contains all the standby weapons (pistol, shotgun, bigger pistol, smg) as well as a few originals (gravity gun, the secondary on the pulse rifle), a simple but powerful backstory (Ph.D in physics from M.I.T., black mesa, Barney) and one hell of a goatee.
Mario jumps, drives cars, makes funny noises when he jumps and was originally in a game not even named for him, not to mention he was a carpenter, not a plumber, named jumpman then. Plus, he's based on a sterotype, which while it's sometimes funny, it gets old fast.
