I dunno why, but I ping around 140-150 to the Verizon Fios servers and no higher than 70 on all our other servers...

Anyone else having this problem?

Yeah, I wanna play on the regular spawn timer 2fort but my ping is at like 160 to it, so I'm just sitting here staring at my server list as I speak =\

My ping is generally double on the Verizon FIOS servers. I usually get around 40 on the other servers.

I think the ping you get depends on how far away you are located from the server, but im not sure.

Isn't that how ping works? Its the time a packet takes to goto the server and come back, so it would be based on distance on any server, no?

Your ISP + wireless or not + location of server + quality of server + network traffic = Ping.

Ping is amount of time in ms that it takes to "play ping pong" with you and the server.
Ploss is when you actually lose packets. i.e. c2s (client to server) and s2c (server to client). That's usually in the base of a percentage. That's what is actually MISSING, which is when you "lag" and get jumpy. [High c2s is worse than high s2c, but both are bad]

An example of ping vs ploss.

eGO Darius Fontaine plays Highschool in CS:S all the time. He usually has 250-300 ping. He has not packet loss. He does not lag.

This is different than most laggers. Most either have low ping but huge ploss, or high amount of both.

EDIT: At the same time, you will find variances between servers but experience no change in gameplay. Keep in mind though, that very high ping WILL impact gameplay, but more that you will see things late (or not at all)

Frisky is partially right, it does help being close to the server, but unless you're not in the US, you shouldn't see a 80 point jump in ping. The other issue is server side or the ISP of the server. And you are right about Ping, it's how many milliseconds it takes a packet to reach the server and then return to the sender. Therefor if your provider or the servers IPS limits its traffic in anyway, you will see a spike in your Ping Rate.

No offense to anything we have going, but I dislike Fios to no end. It's no better, in my area, again MY area, then the DLS they had prior. Needless to say I run a 1.5mb/s connection hard-lined into a Gig network card and get 20-70 ping in all Edge servers, DoD:S/TF2/INS, except in the Fios servers where I run 80 on a good day to 160ish.

Back to the point it comes down to three things. Location, server hardware and server ISP, and location is not really an issue in the US unless it's Miami to Seattle. Even then you're looking at maybe 10-15 extra milliseconds.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but that is all based on the servers and players in a Clan I used to run. (The servers were in-house, converted towers I have floating around still.)

I get long winded, I'll shut up for now. :P

This is similar to what I said, but my knowledge is based on even less ;) Just experience and what I've heard.

On some eGO servers for CS:S I can run like...12ish ping. Others, 50-100. At other times I'll somehow launch to 150, just out of nowhere.

Yeah it really sucks because the 2 fios servers we have for TF2 are the maps I like the best, and its horrible to play on them.

Those spikes you are feeling is someone connecting/leaving or spamming the server. (Spamming meaning they spiked, and then dumped 10k packets onto the server.) Thus skewing everyone else for a moment or ten. Also it can be because someone is messing with something server side, like when I would use the towers I was running Det-Servers off of, for web surfing or updating something or even just taking it out of screen saver.

And about 50 other random things. >_<

I've never had that wide a spread myself Jay, even when connecting to EU/Asiatic servers. I'll see a good 20-30, but rarely enough to affect my play. Anything that gives me +100 I leave anyway because the server has some issue.

I hate to say it, but stay off the Fios servers if you are having issues with them/don't want to deal with the issues you might have. I stay away unless there is a good group on and I'm just looking for some fun and not looking to stomp complete :cursing::cursing::cursing::cursing: and :cursing::cursing: or some :cursing::cursing::cursing::cursing: as well.:P

I usually ping 20 to 40ms higher on the Fios servers, but that's acceptable for me since it only makes my ping around 70-80. The problem is that I get a lot of packet loss from the fios servers. I constantly jitter and warp or just flat-out lose connection for several seconds. Server wide lag spikes happen so often that I don't even bother playing at the verision servers anymore. Its just not fun.

That's why I mostly play BlackMesa or 2fortIR (despite hating instant respawn) and sometimes Egypt.

alright - i'm closing this thread before it goes any further - the original question was answered and there's no reason to bash a sponsor. if you have concerns or suggestions about the servers please make your voice heard either by PMing an advisor or using the drop box. thanks!
