I love rap, its my favorite kind of music, but i have noticed (this is probably true) that most people in eGO hate rap, some don't even consider it music, all that kind of stuff, I just want to know whats wrong with rap? despite what you may believe a lot of rap isnt just about living in a ghetto, cash money, all that stuff, it has meaning to it. They are like poem writers except a lot cooler and better IMO, actually Eminem has been compared to poets like Shakespeare in terms of how good they are with writing lyrics/rhymes/whatever. Im not saying all other music is horrible, I like some rock bands (I love Queens of the stone age and RHCP :P)
But i just like rap more? Post here why you like rap or hate rap and why, this isnt intended to be a flame war or something like that, i just want to know why people here dont consider it music :|

uhh i dont really hate rap but i do perfer rock and metal over rap :Pits just that im not a rap person subconsious feeling :) or something like that (i guess its just natural instinct like if ur hearing something in a radio and say oh i like this song, sometimes u say i hate this song
P.S. I got myself confused >.>

I don't even know how rap can be considered as "music". Music needs to have musical notes, chords, and tone. Rap is just talking with a beat and usually monotone. The heart and soul of the lyrics really speaks out when there are musical notes, not just yelling to a beat. A lot of people do not like monotone thats for sure. Not to mention all of the swear words that rappers abuse. They really use them too much and isn't needed.

Because I prefer singing with greatly varied tunes to talking in tune to a repetitive beat.

As to why the majority of people on eGO don't like rap? Probably because most rap is laden with profanity and members of eGO don't particularly like curse words intermingling with things they enjoy.

I used to think I hate rap. I really did. Then I listened to it.

See, I'm an academic. I'm a history major. I was going to be a music major; I have a pretty strong grip on classical music, and favorite type is classic rock.

However, I started listening to eminem last year, just to see what he was like... suddenly, I was into a new genre. I don't listen to it all the time; I have to be in the mood to actually listen to it. In my opinion, there's 2 types of listening to music: One where you focus heavily on the music at hand, and one where it's the background. Rap refuses to be background music; it's just annoying at that point. When you actually pay attention to the lyrics, however, it's brilliant.

The command some of these people have on the english language is stark, despite the fact that most of them are relatively speaking, uneducated. The rhymes that they put together are brilliant some times. I took a poetry class last year, and asked the professor towards the end if they had any experience studying rap, and she did. In fact, she had worked with it extensively enough that, she said, if it didn't look like a blatant attempt at seeming 'cool', she would definitely include a rap unit in the course.

I don't look at it for the music; I look at it for the academic analysis, and for that reason, it's a very interesting medium.

EDIT: Challenge to all those who dislike rap: Listen to 'Lose yourself' by Eminem. It isn't very 'hardcore', as it were, but it's really sort of a gateway drug. Pay attention to the lyrics, listen to what he's saying, and listen to how he strings it over the beat. Pay attention to the little stuff. For instance: one of the lines in the third stanza:

Teeter-toter caught up between being a father and a prima donna

The word between is actually between the beat. It's a triplet. That's just a little thing that many folks don't notice; if you want to get into analysis, it just further reinforces the meaning of the words, but in any case, it's worth a listen. He swears once in the whole song, and it's in the right place; it punctuates a point effectively.

Idea: read the lyrics of the song before you listen to it. take it as a poem, and see how the music reinforces it.

Yes, I have heard eminem. They only have 1 legit song and thats Love the way you Lie and even that isn't the best song. Eminem is a prime example. I went to iTunes and searched eminem. I saw Explicit allllllll the way down the list. The 2nd song I listened, I instantly heard racist remarks. This goes back to what Noise first said.

but i have noticed (this is probably true) that most people in eGO hate rap

It's probably because people in eGO hate racist remarks and thats why we admin it and thats why a lot of people in eGO don't listen to rap. eminem is just a perfect example.
Thats just my opinion.

I am the Rock and Metal kind of guy, but only Rap I will listen to is Eminem because my parents usually played the song around the car or in the house. That's how I started to listen to Metal and Rock.

Eminem and Beastie Boys :D

Not all rappers constantly swear in their songs, Jay-Z for example does not swear that much in his songs, I can give the links to 10 jay-z songs where he swears maybe once. as for eminem and swearing and racism, thats his thing. He always swears in his songs, thats what makes eminem eminem, he made fun of homosexuals, said racist things, all of that, but does he mean it? No. In fact his best friend was aa rapper named Proof, and he did did one of his most popular songs stan, with elton john singing the chorus, [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WQQvuQ16zU&p[/ame](no swearing in that dont worry, but if you want to see them actually do the song live with a little swearing, just search stan ft elton john :D)

as for what the definition of music really is, Edgard Var?se coined the definition saying that music is "Organized sound", which i think is true. Music isnt always considered just words written on a sheet with different notes for each word.
plenty of rappers out there you may not have heard of rap about things that arent racist, and all that. :P

There is nothing inherently wrong with rap in my opinion.

Rap musicians are like clouds in the sky. They're just floating there, nothing to do with me.

I dont hate rap. I just dont identify with a lot of the messages in the music anymore. It was more of a philosophical change for me than anything. I dont have hos, only tried weed once. I never shot anyone. I dont have fancy cars ( hell, i roll a 97 le baron). The music didnt match who i was or who i am today, so i searched for something that spoke to me. And what i found was rock and metal speaks more to me than rap ever did.

As far as not considering it a musical form, i disagree. Its as valid a form of artistic expression a someone reciting poetry, or telling story. Its just no longer what i choose to listen to.

"Why the Hate" threads usually turn into flame wars.

That being said, I like tasteful rap, that utilizes more than just the rapper. Jay-z had Tony Royster Jr. on one of his tours, and I have great respect for that.

i like rap, but rap died when it became all about dance clubs, dances, auto tuning, and making so called "rap" and "hip hop" a one lined song and making millions off some stupid line "I'm flier than..." or "crank dat..."

the only thing that doesnt change is good underground rap, rappers that arent on the radio, plastered on teenage girls and wanna be guys' room walls,

Apathy, Jedi Mind Tricks, Hopsin, AbandonationZ, and DZK
though they are profane and cruel, these artists are real rappers

Rap and hip-hop's problems with me are, The message more then half the songs put out, their fake automated voices, and no more use of real instruments (unfortunately that died along with the use of voices)

Currently I do not consider todays rap music. I still like some of the old stuff and can listen to that but today's rap/hip-hop is just something I can't deal with.

I don't hate rap. I hate modern rap (besides Eminem), I loved the stuff from the 90s. Biggie Smalls, NWA, Tupac, that type of stuff. Now it is all sell-outs, who even rap about themselves becoming sell-outs (yeah B.o.B. I'm talking to you).

Well, I want to approach this real calmly. It's all about personal taste honestly. I've noticed though, In my gaming career (lul thats a joke and a half) that most people listen to metal and rock which i believe is kind of lame. Don't get me wrong i do like rock, But metal is kind of redundant in my opinion. It's under the same principles as rap, except that with rap it's cursing and racism, and with metal it's Screaming or yelling and not being able to understand what they are saying. Most people won't agree with what i say which is fine, Everyone is entitled to they're own opinion. I'm just saying that Metal is about as bad as rap in my honest opinion. Flame on. Oh by the way, It's about a 50-50 with rap because half like the actual lyrics where the other half which includes me only listen to the actual beat of the song, not even the lyrics in the song.

-Zodiac. Reppin dat eGO Haaaa eat it metal heads :D Lol

Just to make myself clear, I don't hate rap, I just don't care for it. I will acknowledge that many are great at weaving together verses etc. but when I want to listen to poems I listen to poems, when I want to listen to music I listen to music.

However I do hate people who turn up their rap to insanely loud volumes while driving.
