So I had this idea...but I wanted to run it by all of you first to judge interest...

I love military history, ESPECIALLY WWII history. History was always boring in school/in the classroom, but when I looked things up outside of there on my own, I always found it more interesting. Anyways, I was wondering if you guys would be interested in seeing the history of WWII, chronologically, a little bit each day/every few days.

Pretty much it's simple. I start at the beginning* and go to the end*, trying to throw in interesting maps/graphics, etc. I'd do my best to not just make it "here's what the US did--go us." Maybe as we get to key events that correlate to DoD:S maps I can try to find some way to convince Leadership to hold special events for them (maybe)??

Anyways, if nobody cares/is into the real history as much as I am, let me know if I would be wasting my time. I was thinking as we came across different parts we could debate the effectiveness of the battle/operation/etc...maybe what would have been better...where the fight went wrong...something. It'd also be cool to maybe see a little bit added by our Euro friends (or any other country), adding additional little insight to things that we never knew.

?
?
:scared:?

Well, I am interested, but I am a history major at University, so don't need any additional readings in history per se

I'm tipsy. what's this all about? I VOTED OTHER. For the lulz, here I am.. Questioning your thread. BRO.

I like this thread. A lot. History is awesome. WW2 was epic, except for mad people dieing.

On the real. I always admire your in depth extremely descriptive threads. You keep up the good work, mah moii.

furthermore, if a "complete" history wins, i think you should probably start at the beginning of civilization and explain how the lessons learned or not learned had an effect leading up to every war/battle in the history of Life. For example, WWI led to WWII, but there were many issues leading to WWI and before that there were other issues. Start from the beginning.

I think it'd be interesting to see how the battle between eukaryotic versus prokarytoic organisms eventually led to WWII.

The man has a bigger point

If we're TRULY starting from the beginning, it's important to understand the beginning of the beginning. If you could give us a complete rundown of the Big Bang and the formation of the cosmos, we will have a much better understanding of how WWII came to be.

heh but I am all for whichever option you choose, can never get too much WWII history and I would certainly not be opposed to an event that might reflect an objective, map, or mission that one side had. Could make for an interesting wild card event, etc., so drop them as you think of them

Hey SpankDawg, another interesting thread! I did a school project on WWII a few years ago, it was really interesting! I had to cover many different topics, including weapons, fronts, soldier life, work back home (weapon making/ammo), It was all cool stuff! The topic which wasn't covered very well was Vehicles, like tanks and stuff.. So as i voted for other on your poll, I wouldn't mind if you could talk about the vehicles used!

Good luck!

Out with the empire system, in with the domain system...it'll give you a more "complete" understanding of the battles.

Nice idea Spank, I voted for the complete history if it wins you'll have allot of work ahead.
I'm more interested in the correlation with DOD:S. You can mix history and the game in a functional and entertaining activity IMO.

I'm a recently graduated history major who's continuing on to graduate school in history, so I have an opinion, if nothing else. History is really about context, and putting WWII in a lucid context means some basic knowledge of WWI, etc. You wouldn't need a lot of information there, but you need some, because it sets the stage.
As for the war itself, I've always enjoyed every aspect and theater of it, but that's just me.

Complete history would be nice but just the fighting would prolly be more realistc in terms of keeping everyones attention

I agree with all of these nearly 100% (everything involving the "WWI" part that is).

If "complete" wins, I think I will very much consider/likely do WWI and also events leading up to WWI. Then again, it could become a never-ending cycle where I have to look back at the last few hundreds of years of fighting to establish everything, but I am definitely drawing a line in the sand at nothing pre-1900 lol.

I originally wanted it to be this way anyways, but there were two problems I ran into:
1)
Complete history would be nice but just the fighting would prolly be more realistc in terms of keeping everyones attention
Very true. Pre-both wars is gonna be very ZZZZZZZ for a lot of people and WWI is gonna be "what does this have to do with DoD?" for others, which is actually
2) Keeping it relevant. I would like to keep this all within a year, so adding another war essentially cuts the coverage of WWII in half.

I'd be up for it though. I could compress WWI (so WWII last 2x longer in the thread) and compress other wars/conflicts even further, and it would still leave a good 6 months for WWII (or about a year every three weeks or so).

So I did a quick guesstimation check on IF I were to do COMPLETE with WWI history and came up with this rough guesstimate/outline:

Jan 1 Pre-1900 events
Jan 2-Jan 16 Pre-WWI events (1900-1914...a year each)
Jan 17-May 1 WWI (1914-1918...half a month each)
May 2-May 23 Pre-WWII events (1918-1939...a year each)
May 24-Dec 21 WWII events (1939-1945...a third of a month each)
*10 extra days

So...it would work out that way, IF that's the way I go. We'd be to WWII by summer and I actually overestimated some places in there (for example--WWI ended Nov 11, but I counted it in this as a full month), so by my rough estimates (knowing the history enough to know how often not much happened), I will actually end up with roughly a month to play with here and there and also to make up for weeks I am out of town, etc.

If I don't cover WWI in-depth and just include it into "events leading up to WWII" (as a very compressed overview--like a week long), then each day would cover roughly a week of WWII.

If I do "just the fightin'", then each day would also cover about a week of WWII.
