How I think we can bring the Jail server back to former glory.

I could be completely wrong about this, but lately I have noticed that our jail server is no longer as full as it once was. Part of this is because jail is starting to get old for a lot of people, but I would like to put my two cents into why I think the jail server is not flourishing the way it once was.

About 1.5 -2 years ago(this is a guess) the CTs dominated the average map, it would be rare that the T?s would win more than 1 or 2 rounds(not including winning by having last T and finding a way to kill of all the CTs that way, I mean wins be rebelling.) This is actually when I started playing on the jail server. At the time I found the CTs and wardens to be painfully annoying. They were notorious for having god complexes and freekilling was rampant. I found a lot of fun challenging these Wardens, there was a number of us that actually swung the favor to the T?s back then (Illusionist, Michael Jackson, Cow and a number of others) and would frequently challenge the CTs respectfully, especially calling them out on freekilling (and the occasional playful jab).

At this point began a slow transition, every once in a while you would have the occasional Warden or CT that was fun (by Ts standards), this person would typically give sharp jabs and poke at the Wardens that acted overly strict. (I was guilty of doing this as well)

Most people remember the next phase fondly, as it was one of the busiest times the server saw. The CTs started finding the comfortable mixture between keeping the game fun and loose, but still being relatively merciless if a T did step out of line.

This created a really fun balance for the Ts. It is important to understand that there are two different types of people that play as the prisoners. Those that like to play all the mini games and get enjoyment out of following the rules. Then there are those that enjoy finding the limit that the CTs are willing to go before killing, and if you weren?t truly sneaky, you were probably going to get killed. This created a fun level of strategy and challenge for those that were good enough to rebel regularly.

This ?era? of Jail worked for two reasons, one, rebelling that was effective enough to wipe out a team was rare enough that most rounds would get through to the end. This meant following the rules had value because there is a good chance you would make it to the end and get LR. Two, actually pulling of a successful rebel had value because it was difficult enough for it to be impressive. This satisfied a broader range of Ts. Now it is also important to understand that the CTs really are unimportant for the success of your server, you will notice that there is almost never a time (except for that second for someone to notice a CT spot is open) that a CT spot is open. If a CT spot is open, that spot is usually taken because playing CT has inherent enjoyment in it, having that sense of ?power? is enough incentive for people to always play CT. It?s the Ts that you need to entertain on a broader scale for the server traffic to increase.

Now for the problem I see with today. Nowadays I actually play CT much more frequently, this is for two reasons, one, there really is no longer value in rebelling, it is much too easy. It is no longer challenging or impressive so it has lost a lot of its value.

Second, the CTs are usually getting destroyed in the maps nowadays. I feel like if I play T I would only be adding to the already stacked teams. It is not uncommon for me to come into a server with the score 1-7 in favor of the Ts.
This is because the Wardens today are overly lenient, and the CTs are terrified to shoot anybody because they are terrified it?s a freekill or as some fellow CTs bemoan ?Chill out bro you didn?t need to kill him.?

It is important to be relatively strict for this simple reason, if all the CTs are too afraid to actually kill anybody, then they are not going to react in that split second chance they will have to kill someone breaking out of the line and running to the nearby door/alley in their attempt to get away and rebel. The hardest part about the whole rebelling process is initially breaking away from the group, for a lot of us, once we have the gun, we can wipe out tons if not all of the CTs, or at the very least kill enough to scatter some guns around the map for fellow Ts.

So basically I am recommending that the server go back to that healthy balance of a year or so ago. We need to be fun as CTs, but relatively strict about people rebelling. If we can find that balance again, I think we will see an increase in the Jail server?s numbers again.

Finally, I also am recommending stricter punishment for CTs that obviously do not know what they are doing. We really do not need to warn CTs that blatantly freekill Ts, they really just need to be moved to T where they can learn how the game works. This problem was created for a whole other reason but that?s for another day.

Nice thread! I don't think this will ever happen again though. You can change the game, but you can't really change the people that play. I am always more lenient and as a CT I think its fun when Ts rebel

True, the people make the game. With individuals such a Texan and RDK it is much the Ts always manage to rebel, and it is fun most times even as a CT.

Oh and btw can we remove maps that have bomb sites such as Alcatraz and Prospect, when ever the server changes to one of those people always tend to leave.

I'll have to admit, I am extremely lenient when I warden... I also give the Ts a lot of chances to rebel because I believe it's fun having to hunt them down and for them to fight for their lives.

But I see what you mean about rebelling being too easy nowadays and it not being very fulfilling any more.

Knowing how great Jail was back in the day, I agree with this thread 100%, great job ;].

and when I'm on CT people rarely get a chance to rebel. Well, not entirely rarely, but I'll kill a good chunk of those rebellers.

I am strict as a CT when the situation calls for it. I'm not going to shoot people for accidentally moving or not being knifing distance or being a second late out of cells or something, but neither am I going to let them run out of a stack towards a gun. If a T rebels or does something that looks like it will lead to rebellion, then I will put him down.

edit: When to shoot a T is what a find to be a problem on jail. Some will shoot a T for literally nothing, and some won't shoot a T who just ran 20 feet out of a stack until the T stabs them in the face.

Well things change and people move on hopefully we can do Jail in CS:GO
and rebuild from there

My mind is blown! What an essay! But yeah, jail servers are now empty ain't it? Hardly any one plays it nowadays. Maybe because server is instable and always lag or DDOS attacked?

You can hardly do anything to rebels, by the time you found em, they kill yeh

^Not true, most people on jail can't aim so half the time you shouldn't have a problem with killing someone and the ddos stopped :D so stop by sometime btw people join when bomb maps are on not leave

I always felt that what made jail good back in the day was the people who played on it and it's not really something you can teach or seminar people in doing, it's just those were the times and those were the people that made jail good. Maybe a new wave of players or members will come by and restore jail. I'm not knocking the people who play or the current/newer members it's just everyone has their own personality and style and in a roleplaying game like jail, these things get transferred over to the game itself. Things are constantly changing: players, maps, rules, plugins, and it just takes that right balance to make things gel and make jail "fun" like it once was. Jail could get better in time, or it could get worse, but the one thing in that equation that each of us can control is the player, and I agree with at least trying to play in a way that is fun and fair.

Also remember that there is always a "golden age" that is easy to pine for and wish we could relive (Back in my day... etc.) It takes a bit of adapting and to realize that sometimes that era may forever just be a memory of "the good old days" to be cherished.

I'll be honest, I think things have more or less been the same. I think things just get old, I remember I would play passionately because it was a game style I've never seen nor experienced before. It was exciting to have a sandbox to play in.

I think for many it's gotten old and a lot of the core members, the ones with big personalities are now gone. There's a lot less banter going on now, I feel that people aren't getting to know each other as much anymore.

Edit: I don't go on vent very much anymore is there still the fun atmosphere going on? I felt that was a big part of jail.

Lol your sig has me laughing non stop.

Good post. I think a lot has to do with with a select number of maps being played on a regular basis. Seems like every time I play it's on 1 of 4 maps that are voted on a lot. I feel that the more these guys play the map, the more they are used to the vents/guns/idols.

I find some of the older maps more challenging due to the hard vent/gun access. Makes me participate with the CT's longer until I find that split second to escape.

But props to the map makers in these recent ones, they are very well detailed and scripted.

I love your passion!!! And I'm going to go against the grain and respectfully disagree, to an extent. :) Don't stab me in the face yet.

My #1 issue with playing on the Jail servers are the blatent freekills, and wayyyy over the top CT's. It's not necessarily the wardens fault, there is a whole supporting staff of CT's there too. Lienient or strict, you always run into the same thing with a handfull of people. Maybe I just get unlucky and when I play, I get stuck with the neo-freekillers all the time. "Oh, you were 4 inches away from where you were supposed to be, HEADSHOT!!!" "The wardens directions were vague, you didn't understand, you're unsure on locations on the map, don't care, HEADSHOT!!!"

I gave jail another chance, and was let down. I told myself I was never going to play again. Now, I wasn't around 2 years ago, I've only been playing EGO servers for almost a year and a half now, so I'm not sure how it was back then, but today, I'll have to admit, I hate it. The absolute worst part about being freekilled, the time it takes for a round to end so you have a chance to play again.

I will agree whole heartedly on one item, CT's need penalties for not knowing or doing their jobs correctly, freekilling, or not following the LR (which I see quite often) I'm sick and tired of hearing excuses for being killed for no reason. The stricter you get on the CT side of things, the harder it will be for noobies to come in and enjoy the server.

lol sorry for the long post, but this is something I feel strongly about, and believe it is a true issue with that server. Just my $.02, you are allowed to stab me now.

This touched on some other points. CTs need to participate in LRs. What is the motivation to last the whole round if none of the CTs will play along? There should be penalties for not participating.

I will say that things like CT idol I understand, some people get embarrassed. Not a problem though, the CT should just kill themselves and move on, I promise you will be respawned shortly.

What Jail needs to bring it closer to the old Jail for the 'Good ol' Days' is wardens that use more of the maps. I've seen on many of the maps wardens will only use a few things and the next warden uses the same things that the warden they suceeded did.

I believe many wardens are afraid of moving terrorists around because they may rebel and escape. That's okay! It is their job to rebel and escape and the guards' jobs to hunt them down and quell the rebellion. Using more of the map means you'll actually find new things to do, make the map less repetative and the terrorists will have more fun.

Map's aren't made with all this jazz just for you to go to soccer field every round or race or climb. They're made so you can use multiple ways of eliminating the terrorists instead of just doing LR/FR and Simon says for 5 minutes. If someone used the race and climb before you then go do something like hot lava and deathrun or something. Don't just reuse the same things that the previous warden just did.

Also counter-terrorists need to learn to use catwalks and CT areas. Too many CTs tend to be on the same floor as the Ts or same area as them and this causes them to get knived. This causes rebelling to be too easy and many to see it as unrewarding because its not rare to win. Many maps that are CT sided have become either slightly T sided or completely T sided.

CT's use those catwalks and other CT areas, if you see a T running then SHOOT THEM. Stop being afraid of shooting Ts that just walk off because they know you won't shoot them. However, don't be overly strict and shoot Ts that twitch cause they bumb their mouse, alt-tab back in or whatever the cause, but if they're running off then you should shoot them because thats blantly not following the orders.

Next, if you see a T run into a vent or area, don't run after them if there's a big group of Ts right there. This just ends up not working well for everyone. It starts a rebellion and causes any Ts not in it to be shot because most CTs panic and just spray and fail to aim, not because the non-rebelling Ts are running out of the way.

Wardens also pay attention to team chat. Many CTs ask who is special treatment because they were hunting down rebelling Ts or AFK for a minute. Failure to respond usually gets the STs shot and the CT who shot them in trouble because you failed to respond to their question.

TL;DR
Use more of the maps. Use a variety of areas of the maps. Stay in CT areas so you don't get knived. Don't run directly after Ts unless its clear. Wardens pay attention to team chat.

Can we please keep this thread constructive like the Dust/Aztec server. One liners saying, change this to this will be deleted.
