New eGO Server

He's actually right though. You don't have to play the map or the server. Hydro is a marmite map. Love it or hate it. Those who love it need a safe haven to play it, somewhere 24/7 alot of hydro servers have players in them. It's a good idea, I dunno how far it would get. Your best bet with something like this is to PM some leadership for TF2

marmite tastes like beef buillion mixed with wagon wheel grease. nice on toast with a little butter.

I'd be for this idea. It's like how the Pipeline map is rarely used, and then RTV is used to bypass it even when it comes up.

For all the people saying Hydro is a bad map, that is your opinion. It's not like we need every eGO member to agree to a server type. I bet 50% of the eGO members don't approve of two 2fort servers. Anyways, hydro is a fun map to many, and they sure enjoyed having a hydro only server in the states when mine was up. And in response to those unlimited stats and things, my server ran fast spawn and that was the only mod that would effect gameplay. And for all you saying that the map is stalemate land, you are extremely wrong. It may end in a stalemate alot, but that is because you cannot work together. Especially in sudden death. If I had a medic on me during a sudden death, I would win 96% of the time (from hlstatsx) and this is due to the fact that I know the map, and am skilled enough to take advantage of this knowledge. Don't bash the map until you know the ins and outs of it. Playing it for a day straight may not teach you the ins and outs of the map, because you need all experiences from it.

I don't need to know the ins and outs of being stabbed repeatedly in the head with a rusty garden trowel to know that it would be a bad experience.

The fact that I am talking about tf2 maps completely ruins your attempt at countering my statement.

Heh, well, how many have you tried? I know for a fact meridian is fun (I was in many of the beta tests) dont knock it till ya try it ;-)

I've got about a fairly large amount of custom maps installed on my TF2, and the only one I enjoy a little is Egypt, and that one was released as a Valve map.

I find that community created maps don't have nearly the same level of balance as the developers maps do. This goes for all games, not just TF2. In TF2, there are 9 classes to balance and you have to know each of the classes inside and out to make a well balanced map.

Well said, the majority of custom maps are made to favor a certain class or a few certain classes. Although there are some valve maps that are overly unfair for certain classes, they are much more balanced than 99% of custom maps.

Aye, I certainly don't approve of having 2 2fort servers.

I don't think you'd need " all experiences" to know that a chokepoint riddled map is a chokepoint riddled map. Besides, I've played on Hydro several times before, as long as one side had a medic during sudden death and the other didn't, that side would win 99% of the time.

Hydro is not conducive to raising the overall standards of play on eGO servers, it'll attract players, that's for sure, but what do we really want?

Do we want to put out quality servers which raise the standard of play, or do we want to become just another Instaspawn Hydro server?

Obviously you do if you think that sudden death is based on one medic. You really need to go and revisit a hydro ONLY server. There are big differences between valve map servers and hydro only servers, the main difference is the players, unless my server was lucky enough to bring extremely skilled players for three months straight.

I wouldnt mind another server but you never know it might be populated again, I would play it im only one person not 30.

Well, consider that one side has a medic and the other doesn't, as you put it....

I think you need to go revisit a server which has skilled players, ask them if they should have no medics, and then tell me how much they laugh.

99% of custom maps aren't unbalanced... most of the ones on FPSB probably are. The maps section at tf2maps.net has a great amount of people working on their maps, getting playtested and such. There is a plr/attack defend ctf (like a ctf dustbowl map) contest on right now, which will be producing a great amount of good balanced plr maps. Customs get a bad name because all bad customs are popular (think orange_x3 etc) all the good ones are not publicised enough, thats why "most customs" suck...

For my two cents, about 50% of what makes a map "good" is who you are playing it with. A map on an Edge server with 50% of the players being your friends, would be "good" and maybe get populated by word of mouth, etc.
Blackmesa (or 2fort, or whatever) with people you don't click with, not so much.

It's more than just the map for certain.

Yeah, half the reason I can't stand playing on servers besides blackmesa is because I dont know anybody. Alot of the times I run into some really whiny pubs who dont like the server rules and moan about them. So I leave and go back to Blackmesa.

Well the fact that they're whining about rules means that they aren't very good players in the first place.

I've always been of the opinion that eGO should try putting up a server with a less popular map, and give it enough time and effort to build a community. The Valve Maps rotation has been a great success because it developed a devoted community, despite a long-lived stance around here that "rotations don't work."

I love the idea of finding a niche nobody else is occupying, and finding success where others didn't think to look.

I know I am going off topic here, but I do have to say that there is a massive difference between 2Fort and 2Fort with instant respawn. In my opinion IR just ruins that map, which is one of my favorites.

We have a less popular map which is also one of the best-designed maps in the game.

It's called Gravelpit

Gravel Pit is indeed a good map, and one that we have supported off and on for several years now. I have been very happy every time it comes back. We also tried a 24/7 CTF Well (after the changes made to the map in the Pyro update) server which I was extremely fond of, but it lived a short life before being replaced by CP Well, then something else entirely. If memory serves, we also had a Granary server before I joined.

I do not recall us ever having a 24/7 Hydro server, however. If there are enough people who love the map and can keep the server full, I am not at all bothered by them having a server for themselves. It is one more area for us to recruit from, and possibly to give people experience with a map they haven't tried very much themselves.

I don't have a large amount of experience with the map, so I won't argue about the gameplay. I despise 2Fort instant respawn, but I don't think we should take down the server. All I am saying is that if it draws players and members in, I support the idea.

In the meantime, I'd recommend drumming up enough support to hijack the Valve Maps server and RTV over to Hydro. It's worked for the Turbine crowd in the past.

But what kind of players do we want to draw in? That's the key question.

Turning one of our servers competitive-grade would definitely increase the overall skill level. Likewise, having 24/7 hydro will decrease it.
