People's Pocket medics

This post attracted my attention because it's about medics and that's a class I tend to play often. I have to start out by agreeing with the statement that if you want to complain about medics and the way the a medic is played, strap on the medigun pull on the gloves, put on the spectacles and walk around (actually better run) in their boots for awhile. It can be truly frustrating when you get dominated by multiple people as a medic because no one will watch your back while you heal them. Then when they are ubered, all they want to do is charge ahead willy nilly and rack up kills or spawn camp.

Now...Soldiers are in fact not the ones that best cover a medic because of their slower rate of fire and how often they have to pause to reload. Not to mention in close quarters they are liable to do splash damage to themselves as well. But let's assume for the sake of argument that you are super soldier (no not Captain America) and that is not an issue for you because you're all that and a bag of chips. Soldiers are the first one to leave a medic high and dry because they are likely to rocket jump away to someplace across the map and leave you standing there with no cover and no one to heal. And if you are in fact such a great soldier and king of the battle field who can "best access a situation since you're doing all the fighting and know what you're doing", then it shouldn't be a problem to take the hit on health for the jump to give you a tactical advantage. You might consider rocket jumping and landing perfectly square on a health pack, problem solved.

Scouts who are burning to death are often the ones that will call for medic and then run away from you at full speed to try and get to a health pack. And while scouts can wreak havoc on a battlefield, even a team full of scouts are not liable to stand up against say a few pyros or heavies. Despite their "health cushion" heavies are slower moving targets and are more easily taken out by snipers or a few different attackers all focusing on him. Thus taking your gun off him for a second can many times mean the difference of him staying up. Not to mention heavies provide the best cover for a medic to hide behind in a confined space like a vent or sewer.

Thus "the conclusion we can arrive at is simple" if you are a medic and your teammates are dying...that's the name of the game. We aren't playing paddy cake out there we are firing weapons with the intention of killing. A medic cannot be everywhere at once even if he tries. We will often try triage and heal who we can but few people like to play medic and mess up their kill/death ratio.

After my preceding novel I will leave you with one thought. If you seek to blame one class or a few people playing a game that's called Team Fortress 2, then you aren't playing as a team. Telling a person or a particular class (a support class at that) that it's their fault you lost a game...isn't great sportsmanship.

Thank you for reading this post and I'll see you and quite possibly heal you on the battlefield.

Thereven's Ultra Super Secret Special Top-Ten Guide to Getting Healed When There Are Only Pocket Medics Available (now in Technicolor)

10. Play as a heavy and eat sandvitches
9. Eat other heavies' sandvitches that they've dropped for you
8. Kill an enemy heavy while they eat a sandvitch, steal sandvitch
7. Pick up health kits
6. Use dispensers
5. Run back to spawn
4. Play as a medic and regenerate health/use kritzkreig taunt
3. Play as a spy and ask for heals from the enemy team
2. Die, respawn with full health
1. Repeatedly ask player being healed by pocket medic, "Is that a medic in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" Steal pocket medic when they quit from embarrassment/annoyance.

LOL, so good.

I always play with the idea that I have unlimited lives, and it's ok if I die.

Frog, when i'm not on your team you annoy me enough to want to medic for you. haha hit me up for medic ;D

I try to protect ANY medic that heals me, and sometimes giving my life up for them just for them to get away. (Instead of both of us dying, I buy him some time by jumping in and blasting away, so he can run away).

Also, the medics that heal me and not anyone else, I specificially tell them on the mic to heal whoever needs it more than I do (such as people with red + bubbles, burning people, etc).

I'm always looking for more pocket medics =D

I'm sorry to hear you've been neglected by medics, Echelon. :( It is quite tragic.

I'm a specialized roaming soldier so it's not a very big deal to me, I grab my packs behind enemy lines.

How nice to know that whenever my team wins it is because I, as a medic, have done my job. With this refreshing attitude I am amazed at the number of times that I enter a server and see no medics at all on my team. You would think more people would play medic as the entire win/lose thing rests upon their shoulders alone.

That said Medics need to remember:

It's called economic theory, you gain a good benefit at a minimal cost

A simple 1-2 second burst gives your target an additional 48 to 100 health, which is more than enough to get him out of harm's way.

When an otherwise competent team wins, it is because of medics, when an otherwise competent team loses, it is also because of medics not doing their job.

And if you are in fact such a great soldier and king of the battle field who can "best access a situation since you're doing all the fighting and know what you're doing", then it shouldn't be a problem to take the hit on health for the jump to give you a tactical advantage. Which just demonstrates how wrong your post is.
Soldiers are the first one to leave a medic high and dry because they are likely to rocket jump away to someplace across the map and leave you standing there with no cover and no one to heal.

1. Your post relies on player stupidity (soldier abandoning his medic)

2. If soldiers are not the best class for guarding a medic, what is the best class that isn't sorely lacking in something else? There are only two real replacements, seeing as spy, scout, sniper, engi, and pyro are out.

Heavy? Too slow and not maneuverable, also, no splash damage.

Demoman? Some european teams do it (TF2FE), but generally they are vulnerable to scouts, the main reason for medic deaths, they are a viable replacement though. But with regards to your point, demomen are equally liable to every one of the problems you have pointed out

2a. Furthermore, explain why the case with many teams is that they rely on a soldier to keep the medic alive (the pocket) while another soldier (the roamer) goes forward.

Conclusion: If you are captain america and are so great at soldier, you wouldn't be making simple elementary mistakes like abandoning your medic in the first place, as such, your post is flawed by the very fact that it relies on poor play.

Incorrect sir. Skill is a tremendous factor, especially in competitive play. Medics are not the be all/end all of teams, while important, they do not directly determine the outcome.

This is TEAM FORTRESS 2 we are talking about here, not the invasion of East Germany.

2 teams that are very even (and "otherwise competent") does not come down to the medic alone. Anyone who believes this hasn't played at the high end levels of competition

Echelon, people are giving you opinions and thoughts regarding flaws your own thoughts. There's no need for you to lash out back at them stating how wrong and incompetent you think they are because they disagree with you. Maybe try debating with an open-mind and take some of it in. I don't think your opinion is 100% accurate and I don't feel the need to tell you what I disagree with because I feel as though I already know how you're going to respond.

You wrote a guide and it got published, that's great. But people develop their own play styles and you can't force this down anyone's throats.

I'm well aware that you can't rocket jump and land square on a health pack. Sarcasm was used there but apparently lost in context.

Point 1
While you could call it that you could also call it play style or trying to gain a tactical advantage as you called it.

Point 2
I have seen a heavy and a medic take all comers in the game. I would argue that soldiers rely upon splash damage and other classes that don't have it rely on skill actually hitting the target. Pyro's also can be a force to be reckoned with. Players running around on fire (a topic you brought up in previous posts) is an example of a different kind of "splash damage" it's the gift that keeps on giving.

Point 2a
Citing an example of soldiers relying on a pocket medic with a soldier, and another roamer soldier is something that (at least I thought) you were arguing against but now you use as proof of good game play? Make up your mind. Explain it? As Toilet Pasties very astutely pointed out...play style. There is no one end all be all strategy.

Leadership is watching this thread. I'm leaving it open. For now.

Scrappy Tip: When writing a post, I find myself using the "2nd person" (you, etc), I ask myself, "Gee, Scrappy, I wonder if I'm making a reference to another member rather than their topic/point.

Multiple posts edited. The Leadership team wants threads with lots of differing ideas and conversation.

If you guys can't play nice though, we'll have to step in and babysit. <-------- (That's an implied negative reference. Stop doing that.)

PS: Don't expect the Leadership team to edit your posts. It's a lot easier just to trash the thread and/or posts.

Before we rename you "Medic From Texas", I get dibs on "Medic from Minnesota".

Sorry for the wall of text. I'm pretty passionate about being a medic. :P

woa, guys it is never someones fault if we win or lose in a 16 player team, just relax it is a game, try to have some fun, losing means more defending usually, that is always a more fun thing to do.

And when are you going to be my puppy med scrappy, we will get that sabion guy ;)

As much as I agree with you, you have to remember we are playing on pubs and not scrimming.

Here are some of the top deciding factors as to who I heal / don't heal in pubs. It took me quiet a while to determine the true criteria for healing in pubs, and the reason some people seem to Hate / Love pocket medics.

To start the reasons I as a medic will/won't heal you

-If I uber you and you dont taunt kill, I won't heal you.
-If I ask for you to share your sandvich and you dont, I won't heal you.
-If you get a hat while I'm healing you, I won't heal you (unless I don't want the hat you got)
-If you don't taunt at the end of a krtiz, I won't heal you.
-If you yell at me for not ubering the sniper, I will heal you
-If you do not let me kill steal, I won;t heal you.
-If you ate bacon and I'm hungry for bacon, I won't heal you.
-If you type explode in console during an uber, I will heal you.
-If you eat a sandvich with a kritz, I will heal you.
-If I don't like your name, I won't heal you.
-If you say duck duck grey duck, I won't heal you.
-IF YOU HAVE NEVER USED CAPS LOCK, I WON'T HEAL YOU.
-If you say you love any ACC team other than NCSU, I won't heal you.
-If you are dead, I won't heal you.
-If you are an enemy spy and give me warning, I will help you get assists on my teammates given that I wish to spite said Teammate. Also in response to the kill you must stay near me so that we can both get in on the freeze cam and taunt.
-If you are still reading this, I will heal you.
-If you quote me in the forum, I won't heal you for an hour.
-If you give me casino cash, I will take it and not heal you.
-If you don't like meat, don't let me know I won't heal you
-If you do Calculus while I heal you, I will continue to do so.
-If you make a lovely poem for me, I sure as hell won't heal you.
-If you break me heart, I will go engi to hit it with a wrench and repair it.
-If you hate the Fix thread, I won't heal you.
-If you want me to switch mediguns, I will go combat medic.
-If you are next to 3 level three dispensers, I will go resupply cabinet to out heal em.
-If you lose a melee fight, I won't heal you (b/c I'll be meleeing)
-If you are trying to telefrag, I will heal you.
-If you repeat yourself multiple times, I won't heal you.
-If you repeat yourself multiple times, I won't heal you.
-If you repeat yourself multiple times, I won't heal you.
-If you think the third time is the charm, I won't heal you (It is 478th ty very much)
-If you are sitting beside me irl, I won't heal you.
-If my internet goes out, I won't heal you.
-If you are playing on a different server, I will try my best to send an inter dimensional medi-beam to you.

Secondly, The reason people hate pocket medics.
They don't know the obvious deciding factors posted aboce.

Lastly, reason people love pocket medics.
They don't.

hrmph, not read through this thread but, well. I don't mind people who have pocket medics, it's always nice to know there is at least a medic. Most if not all pocket medics will heal other people while their trouser player is dead and respawning. Pocket medics and trouser players seem to attract most of the attention = easy kills for me. So yeah, be thankful they are out there, they stop all those shiny weapons firing at you peoples, now please, in the case of this thread:
