Would I play on a no-crit server? Yes

Would I want to play solely on non-crit servers? No

If that makes sense to anyone else.

That's what I'm tryin' to say. Variety is the spice of life. If we only had one, even two no-crit servers, I'd be perfectly fine with that. Then I could just switch to one of our other servers when I'm feeling lucky, or when I'm just not in the mood for that style of play.

As mentioned earlier, a "no criticals" server would be a no random criticals server similar to the "no critical" configuration used in competitive play.

Those of you who played in the summer competitive league have first-hand experience in seeing this subtle difference can make in playing TF2.

"Then the weaker team leaves due to frustration, leaving a dominant team that steamrolls through everyone else."

If people really are that terrible at this game to rely on a random critical hit to get a kill, then there not having fun either way.
Also, saying that its a"part of the game" is a sorry excuse.

No, but a random crit might give the losing team enough of an opening to punch through and actually do something. Without it, they'll just get stuck in spawn, getting camped, destroyed, and they'll eventually ragequit.

As Kamon said, I see more people crying about dying to a crit than people basing their strategy on random chance. I'll reiterate: grow some tougher skin and stop worrying over a gameplay mechanic. There's a lot of problems in this world, critical hits in TF2 are not one of them :P

Honestly, random crits don't help out a bad team.

They help out good players in small encounters, and they, by nature, help better players dominate more effectively.

They help you win the battle, not the war.

If anything, getting rid of them would make the playing field more level: the best players won't be getting the highest crit rolls.

The only crits I'm in favor of getting rid of are the intel capture and point capture crits. Those really seem to throw people who are new to our servers.

No, and I'm pretty sure this poll has been made before and with similar results. Crits are part of the game. They make TF2 different from other games. If you don't like crits, go and play Css or Dod. If we had one I would never go on it.

Situationally, they can help a bad team out. I've cleared four enemies off of a control point--so we could cap it--with one sticky bomb :)

Crits are really helping a bad team, getting lucky and kill a person right away while usually you would have lost that battle for 99.99% without getting that random crit, I usually just get killed by a crit if it is either random, or the usual revenge backstab.

It makes all the difference, but when it is gone, I wouldn't have something to whine about :P

The classes are what makes TF2 different from other games, not the crits. People don't start playing TF2 because they see crits in game, they start playing because of the humor from the Meet the Class videos and the gameplay it promotes. Crits are just an add-on to all of this.

Definitely didn't expect this thread to get 70 replies already.
I personally would love to have nocrit turned on, and damage spread off. I'm the kind of player who plays Smash bros. Melee with the items off and on neutral stages; I hate losing due to luck and no fault of my own.

I play the same way.

Melee >>>>>> Brawl anyway

By a wide margin.

But I love R.O.B. in Brawl sooooo much.

*hugs R.O.B.*

I love R.O.B. in general. I own two R.O.B.s.

And I love doing reverse aerials with R.O.B.'s Up+B.

Fair enough, but I didn't mean crits were the ONLY thing making TF2 different. I didn't make my point too well and I wasn't considering everything, but I mean that crits are part of what makes TF2 different. Personally I love running into a room full of enamies and launching a lucky crit rocket right into the centre of them. I've never enjoyed Css or Dod:s as much as TF2 and crits are part of the reason why. I think its good to have a small bit of luck mixed in with the skill apsects.

When it comes to fast-paced multiplayer games, I don't think throwing in random dice rolls are a good idea. There's already quite a bit of random element considering how variable human reaction times are and how situations can change so quickly depending on the circumstances, there's no need to make it any more random.

Please! Crits are not random or lucky! 2% chance is really rare.

http://teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2221

  • A base chance, which is fixed per weapon (2% for all non-melee weapons, 15% for melee)
  • An additional bonus, which is based on the amount of damage you've done to enemies in the last 20 seconds. This bonus linearly scales with damage up to a maximum of 10% [after 800 damage dealt]

So I find it hard to believe that you people complain about getting shot every fiftieth time; you should understand now that it is because people are on a roll. It is an essential game mechanic. However, for scrims they are turned off because they don't even want that 2% base chance.

Fact: I don't know, and the enemy doesn't know when the enemy will get a crit
Fact: Crits kill me in places normal shots wouldn't

Fact: Getting killed by an unavoidable crit is a death that resulted only from luck, and not due to my skill or the opponent's skill
