I have a Western Digital 1TB External HDD, and it's been working fine the whole time...

but recently, the LED won't turn on and Windows 7 won't recognize it.

Any way I can fix this?

Thanks.

First thing, you can disassemble it and check connections inside. (Beware losing which drive went in which slot.)

If nothing obvious, you'll have to send it off for service.

Lucky for you, I do that kind of service! You're more than welcome to hop in eGO's online Tech support and get more info!

It's an External HDD. It's in an enclosure.

There is no way to open it except by force, which I'm sure would destroy the warranty.

Is it recognized on another computer either running Win7 or Vista or XP?

Has it been running fine on Win7 but lately stopped?

If it was put together, it can be taken apart. Send it to me if you think you're gonna break it.

And thus voiding the warranty, which seems to be what he's concerned about.

Just to clarify, it's been working fine on Win7, but it now just stopped being recognized, and the LED doesn't turn on. Correct?

Assuming you checked the wiring (cables plugged in to PC and/or power source, if needed), could you tell us what's the model? Google search the model can help as it may have a reported issue with power or the HDD inside failing after some use.

Also, how long have you been using the HDD?

Yes. When I installed Windows 7 it was still working fine, I'm almost certain.

Just recently it hasn't turned on at all.

I can hear the HDD working briefly when I plug it back in, but not LED comes on and Windows doesn't recognize it.

I would just open the enclosure and use the drive as an internal drive. That is all the external drives are. A regular hard drive in a special enclosure that gives it the power and connection to the PC it needs but for portable use.

In my opinion never ever buy 1 TB externals. I have seen this happen many times. Its the Power that goes out. I bet the drive is still good. Just need to take it out and just stick it in your computer.

Thats what I would do if I had all the extra connections and enough power from the PSU.

is it firewire 400 or 800 or usb

does it a option to use a external power source or all power comes from the firewire/usb bus

i find they can be power hungry and need external power if you got a few things allready on your firewire bus.

also do you know the brand of the enclosure glyph, lacie etc and the brand of the actually drive WD etc

that all depends on it's use if i was olny useing it with a desktop of course i would go internel but if it's for a laptop or is used to bring stuff home and to work it could be needed.

If the device is under warranty.....why are we having this discussion?

Just a thought.

Using the warranty means losing the stuff on the HDD unless he can back it up on a separate drive or on discs.

Is it possible to try using a different cable to attach the external to your PC? If that doesn't work, then it's most definitely the power. Only thing you can do then is use it as an internal HDD or use the warranty and see if there's any possibility of them to let you save the data on it.

Man....I never thought of that. I've always fixed them here in my shop. They really trash your data STILL? :O You'd think the company would care about your data!

Yes, it is USB and I have a Desktop. I would send it in since it has a warranty and all, and I can deal with the data being wiped...

but at the same time, there is some data on it that was very difficult to get in the first place...

It uses an external power source. Like I said, I plug it in and I can hear the drive working but then it slows to a halt and the LED doesn't turn on.

depending on the who makes it and if theres a warranty they will replace it and transfer the data too the new one. I know for a fact that glyph and Lacie both do this they offer data recovery with the warranty

If you really want to try and keep that data, I think the best way to do so is to look around for any PC repair shops nearby. Small businesses are usually privately owned and can offer more leeway in terms of repair and cost. They might be able to get the external working again by replacing the battery from another unit they might have on hand. Or if all fails, they could plug it in and replicate the data to a new external for a fee, which would suck.

Looking at the return policy WD offers, if you use the vendors they listed, your warranty won't be voided when they retrieve the stored data on the HDD. It's worth a shot as well.

Hey Knollex, been watchin the thread for a few days and looking around for a fix. Would not expect that from WD. I use a seagate 1TB ... wonder how long before this one dies. Is it best to leave it plugged in all the time or should it be powered off when not in use .

I would weigh it out . How much is your data worth to you ? See how Snipeyes suggestion goes , with a small private owned shop and see if it can be saved.

Or straight to the warrranty route .

How long has the drive been in use ?
