i7 940 @ 4.0ghz+

hmmmmm im asking you guys if 4.0ghz will be attainable by an i7 940 24/7 stable with a Noctua NH-D14

As you may not, the i7 940 is C0 stepping which runs hotter and requires more voltage i believe than the D0 stepping. The D0 stepping of the 940 is of course the i7 950.

So heres the story:
My uncle may sell me his i7 940 setup with his mobo and all that and im willing to if he gives me a good price which hopefully he does. If i do get this, i wanna get 4.0ghz or even more on it, there are plenty of articles out there showing i7's being able to achieve 4.0ghz pretty easily and im hoping this i7 940 can do it also and run it 24/7 stable.

So, do you guys think an i7 940 @ 4.0ghz+ will be possible with a Noctua NH-D14 24/7 stable with reasonable temps?? (They say 70's C is fine for an i7 9xx load)
Also, im guessing voltages will be in the 1.4's and should be safe while 1.5 is a no no and will fry your CPU

so give me your opinions and tips.....need to boost my knowledge and get help making my decision
 
U know that cpu cooler is very good!:) i have looked at some articles about it and it gives good cooling. Im sure it would give u temp. down to 40 idle and 60-70 load maybe:)
 
Very doable. Will depend mostly upon the chip itself(every chip is different!), the motherboard, and the person sitting behind the monitor.
 
I believe an Asus P6T or a model around that....the stuff should all be fairly high end considering its my uncle xD not sure about the RAM, don't know if hes going to sell that to me also

PSU will be a Tuniq Ripper 1000w

I hope its doable haha 4.0ghz and i will be extremely happy for a good while and not need to worry about upgrading except for GPU's here or there
 
PewPew, where do you live? Unless its always -10C outside, don't attempt this. Getting a C0 to 4 GHz on air is almost impossible. I can only get my 920 to 3.6 GHz (They make the 920 in C0/C1 and D0, I was unlucky and got a C0/C1). And I even have a NH-D14 in push-pull configuration.

But yes, like the others say, every chip is different. You might just make it, and I prob could get mine to 4 GHz if I upped the voltages, but I don't want to risk it.

Are you saying you haven't upped the voltage? What voltage are you running at?
 
I upped my voltages, they're at 1.325 right now. Initially I tried 4 and was getting like 60C idle so...

Oh come on, some chips have a VID of 1.375!

And don't forget that 940's are higher binned than the 920's, so have better overclock potential. Not much, but another ~200Mhz probably.

hahaha wow that sucks.......i7 920 i would definitely get a D0, you shoulda took more consideration into it xD

the thing is, i've seen C0 steppings getting 4.0ghz and over, it just required a lot more effort than a D0, im hoping the i7 940 are part of a better batch than the i7 920's and better picked, people have said it shouldn't be too hard to achieve

ill do some more research as well as keep updated on this thread

At the point that I bought the processor, I didn't realize that there were two different versions. And also, now that I do know, I can't find a way to get one that I know is a D0.

The C0 stepping is pretty much gone now i believe, Amazon.com is also fairly reliable, my Q6600 G0 stepping was from them.

The best would be to go in-store and see it for yourself, i think the outside of the box tells you but im not sure. The Spec code lets you know but those are on the processor itself i think or maybe the box

here, tells you info about D0 stepping and C0 stepping etc...i guess it still hard to make sure 100% its D0 stepping without opening the thing or something, someone can correct me tho
 
Whatever, I'm not gonna spend another $280+ on a processor just to get 400mhz out of it.

lol obv....i thought u were gonna like return it or something haha

you can definitely squeeze some more out of it, 3.8ghz is a good sweet spot with HT and Turbo mode

wats your max load temp right now??
