i7 940 @ 4.0ghz+

yea i kno its not a huge difference......just the feeling of getting 4ghz and i mean the way it sounds, who wants to hear 3.8 when you can hear 4!!!

And then i can join one of them 4ghz clubs LMAO!!!

I really want to see some real reviews on the Thermalright Venomous-X.......why is it taking them so bloody long to get some reviews out?? I wanna compare it to the NH-D14

Let me put this mathematically.

NH-D14 > Megahalems > Venomous X
Why? NH-D14 is basically the same as Megahalems, it just comes with two great Noctua fans, and has a better mounting system. The Venomous X is basically a Megahalems, except you can't have a fan in the middle, so Push-pull setups don't work as well.

hmmm the venemous-X is supposed to be fairly good tho, thats y i wanna see some full fledged real reviews on it

Venomous-X looks very promising?? beats it by as much as 10C almost!!!! :drool:
 
PewPew, those were all tested passively, and in that case, the biggest cooler will win. Its simple thermodynamics. Slap 2 fans on each in a push-pull config, Megahalems will win out of those 3.

I think he used a fan......he may not show the installations with fans but he shows the Megahalem with a fan so im gonna assume he made the test fair and put a fan on all of them.

Even if it was without a fan.......i doubt those temps are possible without active cooling:
6 cores @ 4.2ghz running 50'sC-70'sC

He also has fan brackets on the True 120 copper and such but just doesn't show the fan......im guessing just so you can see the heatsink more clearly and such. In the end, he definitely used a fan and im pretty sure the successor to the True 120 is not gonna let down that easily, especially if it took them over a year of testing and designing to make it.

Thermalright states themselves that they meant to future proof it with six-core processors in mind and im pretty sure 6-cores makes more heat and 4-cores. And he even runs the benchmarks on an overclocked 6-core processor @ 4.2ghz

He was planning to sell me the i7 940 for $300 alone so thats a no deal for me.....i'd rather just get an i7 920 D0 and OC the crap out of it
Heres the build im looking to do right now.....i want it to be as cheap as possible while not sacrificing performance.

Foxconn FlamingBlade - $160

Super Talent 6gb DDR3 1800 (PC3 14400) - $135

Intel Core i7 920 2.66ghz - $289

Noctua NH-D14 - $86

Total - $670 + $12 shipping = $682

This is just about the best price/performance build i can get.........if anyone can build this setup cheaper on another website then let me know. Newegg i7 920 are all D0 stepping right??

I would post the newegg shopping cart page but idk how to

any reccomendations would be helpful, im not really looking to spend more than this amount as im limited on money and this will all be done behind my parents backs lol

Also, you think the ram will fit with the NH-D14???

You'll definitely regret getting that motherboard. Save up a little more, and get a quality motherboard that will be a good overclocker and last.

will i??? i've heard good reviews about it and that its a good overclocking mobo....it also does both CFX/SLI, the benchmarks and such look good also

I'll see if i can make like $40-60 on allowance...will let me get a nice $200 mobo i guess

While having quite a few options in BIOS overclocking, the board only managed to hit a max FSB of 150MHz and anything above this would cause the board to simply hang at POST. We did manage to do quite a bit of tweaking, but with not as much time as a hardcore overclocker. However, if you can’t really push above 150MHz starting off, it’s going to be a harder board to tweak.

As noted above Foxconn motherboards, and that one in particular, blow at overclocking.
 
yea i've read that one......along with others stating its a good performer and can get the i7 920 to 4.0ghz

maybe they got a bad board???

No. You get what you pay for. I imagine it is possible to get a 920 to 4Ghz on it, but it would be extremely challenging and not guaranteed. Another $40 will get you motherboards where 4.0 is guaranteed, and 4.2 is pretty easy.

idk man.....that is the only review i see looking down at the Foxconn and not being able to OC it well

I know a lot of ppl hate on Foxconn and they weren't exactly the best but they seem to be doing pretty well now and this mobo of theirs is looking really good.........their more expensive bloodrage has also gotten good reviews
