Homemade 5.1 headset

If you have, and use Realteks high Definitions latest drivers/software the are ways to partition speakers. And to set individual speaks as certain speakers, meaning you have the ability to make it true 5.1. Also, if you have any skills with wires you could take 2 pairs of broken earphones, snip their jacks from them, snip the earbuds jacks off, merge the wires, one out put for each earbud, and viola. True 5.1. Though, what I would do, is merge all of the wires into one, buy some wire protectors from newegg and still have true 5.1 surround sound. And rather than buy new headphones, buy some padding, then some elastic material, needle and thread, then you're on your way to making your own headphones.

I'll try this as soon as my Bose head set bores me.

And yeah, you're right. However, you just might pick up some noise if your wiring isn't correctly. These wires are all coaxial and airtight, or should be. Snipping them will introduce noise.

I'm surprised you know that kind of stuff. It is true that snipping them might cause some kind of static/white noise but it's actually not as high a chance as you might think.

(I wasn't trying to take a stab at your intelligence, I just think that that isn't common knowledge and it's nice to see someone who knows his sound)

And I'm not saying to do that (it''d be cool if it worked), my suggestion still is to go with the partitioning of the speakers. If your computer doesn't have the software, I'll look up some freeware to provide you all with this tool. It's nice to have.

Those of you who use Mac: You have access to some amazing free tools, I suggest getting to know your computers software.

Haha, it's not just sound, it's basic engineering of signals. I'm not even in this field of EE. I'm in Nanotech Eng lol. I know it won't affect it too much, but you put it under an oscilloscope and you'll see a difference especially if you move things around the wire that'll change the capacitance in the air and area around the wiring. However, you could prevent this if you shield the wires. Just get some tin foil or something and either connect it to the inner shielding of the coaxial or ground it.

I think we could make a business out of this, GBear. Make 5.1 (technically 5.2) surround sound head sets, and sell them dirt cheap. Same quality sound, but for half the price. We could even do head sets. Make it a gaming thing.

I've started to ramble. The more I look at this, the more I want to try it. We could do cheap eGO headsets. Affordable. Who wouldn't pay 30+ shipping for 5.2 headsets (with mics)? I'll take a look into what would create the best sound, and talk to the proper people; if it's a feasible idea.

Heh, I did it again. It's just hard not to think about, knowing that we have the expertise to do this all in one area.

I can be serious, if there is a need to be. I won't have to much money to invest for little though. I want to try it out first, too. We'll see how it all works out, and if there is a demand for them, or not.
