I bought TF2 because I liked it for the fun shooter is was. This was back before any of the class updates, and I was fine with it remaining stagnant. When the first updates came out I was happy, as many of you were. But recently, with all these new changes to the game, I feel it's turning into some kind of poorly made FPS/RPG hybrid.
Take the hats. I didn't really mind the hats, but also didn't care about getting them. Now it seems the community base plays the game only for the hats. And then they put in this half-assed crafting system for you to use the extra weapons you get randomly, when they should be based on accomplishments in game or just give them to everyone at once. I don't want to spend time playing my favorite shooter clicking on items in a backpack so I can make hats that I never even see my character wear, yet this seems to be contrary to most people I see these days.
Let's not forget about the seemingly thoughtless updates that come out. What part of the word demo(lition) man indicates a knight with a sword and shield? It's like valve is just making arbitrary weapons to quiet down the player base screaming for updates and hats. And the worst part: the weapons you can ONLY get randomly or by crafting (which is also random). I'm talking about the pain train, homewrecker, crit-a-cola, and dalokhos bar. Who thought it would be a good idea to make game changing items only available by sheer luck? This is a trend that hopefully won't continue, that's all I can say.
