Is it me or is this game turning into something terrible

I bought TF2 because I liked it for the fun shooter is was. This was back before any of the class updates, and I was fine with it remaining stagnant. When the first updates came out I was happy, as many of you were. But recently, with all these new changes to the game, I feel it's turning into some kind of poorly made FPS/RPG hybrid.

Take the hats. I didn't really mind the hats, but also didn't care about getting them. Now it seems the community base plays the game only for the hats. And then they put in this half-assed crafting system for you to use the extra weapons you get randomly, when they should be based on accomplishments in game or just give them to everyone at once. I don't want to spend time playing my favorite shooter clicking on items in a backpack so I can make hats that I never even see my character wear, yet this seems to be contrary to most people I see these days.

Let's not forget about the seemingly thoughtless updates that come out. What part of the word demo(lition) man indicates a knight with a sword and shield? It's like valve is just making arbitrary weapons to quiet down the player base screaming for updates and hats. And the worst part: the weapons you can ONLY get randomly or by crafting (which is also random). I'm talking about the pain train, homewrecker, crit-a-cola, and dalokhos bar. Who thought it would be a good idea to make game changing items only available by sheer luck? This is a trend that hopefully won't continue, that's all I can say.

Well, considering every server but PL is full at peak times, I wouldn't say were doing badly here.

I still love the game, I honestly don't care about weapons and hats. My minigun can take down anyone, anyday ;)

First off, if you are playing the game to get hats you should take a step back and look at why you are playing the game.

I'm sorry to hear that you aren't having fun with the game. It might be a good idea to take a break from the game and come back to it in a couple weeks.

He's Scottish. The sword ties in with his heritage. Not random.

I can see what you mean, I guess. But nothing is really overpowered, so I never feel like some item threw the game off balance.

And I feel the random system is fun, because it makes you feel good when you get things, and the hats are rare items that don't change anything, so its not like getting a super rare gun that screws up the game.

Yeah its unfortunate that your arent having the fun you had when the game first began. But that of all games, with updates, they thrive on what the "TF2 Community" wants more then how the game was when first came out. So with the silly updates, its come from the community that plays the game. I personally just love playing, im not a big fan of hats or the new weapons. I play medic most of the time and the items i use are the base items aside from kritzkrieg. Just take a break for awhile, come back when your craving the tf2 world ;)

I don't mind the side-grades to the weapons. The hats are just, eh. If I find one, I'll wear it, but I'm not going to go out of my way to try to obtain one.

It is you, stop being such a whiner.

Crafting or changing your loadout takes a few seconds, the rest of the time you are playing.

So you like tf2 for being a fun shooter but don't like random updates which make a class more varied and fun?

Tf2 is not turning into an rpg, you are turning into a negative Nancy. Updates keep the game fresh and the playerbase coming back year after year.

I don't care as much about the hats and the purely random weapons. The hats help encourage people that are object-mongers to play, and while they aren't as good of quality of players, they still can be fun. The random weapons generally don't have any real effect. The only one I consider using is the gunboats, as the others actually decrease the effectiveness of my play.

The main thing I dislike about what valve is doing is it is bogging down the game. After the latest set of updates, there were so many problems that annoyed the heck out of me (server crashes, client crashes, server slowdowns...). Each individual update doesn't add on too much, but the cumulative effect is the 180+ fps I had half a year ago is down to 60 at times :(

I would have to completely agree with carmine here, you can pretty much do 1 of 3 things. 1. Quit. 2. Deal with it and play. 3. Find a vanilla server out there with no updates what so ever. I dont like all the updates, but dont dislike them either so much that I want to quit.

At what point does he discuss the game not being populated? He did not say the servers were low on players, but the content Valve ships out.

He is angry at the drop system not giving him the drops he wants, and the crafting system not being as helpful as it should be.

It's not just you. Quoted for sheer truth.

I don't really think it's appropiate for an eGO to call someone a whiner, negative nancy, or other names for expressing their opinion. I'd expect that response from the Steam forums and their trollfesting, but not here.

I would expect someone whining about tf2 turning into an rpg on the steam forums. Not here.

People play TF2 for hats, for fun, for rankings, help refresh memory. etc..
its not stupid at all, because Valve had made updates for 3 ish years, Most game makers, when they are done with one game they move on to another but not Valve's TF2.

I agree some of the updates have been very silly (Demoman's especially) but they do give a fresh feel to the game and serve they're purpose (Unlike the FAN)
But if you don't like the Crafting or Hats, don't bother with them. It's not like you're missing out on something amazing and most people still use the vanilla weaponry over the class's update.

You have to admit weapons that can ONLY be obtained by random drop is pretty silly.

THIS spoken like a true tf2 player
point being is dont sweat an update just play like normally no matter how funny a demoman with a sword seems just dont use the weapons if you dont like it. everyone has grown accustom to the weapons valve dishes out anyhow no matter how stupid and the update crashes the community understands valve screwed
Code:
up and will take a few days off. NO BIGGIE. and about the crafting enough said already
